Unit Description Risk Management of organisations is about minimising adversity and maximising the probability that business can continue to operate in periods of unavoidable adversity. This unit will provide an introduction to the principles and processes involved in risk management, and explore issues relevant to corporate governance and business continuity. Study is framed around concepts set out in important benchmarks, including Australian/International Standards, regulatory obligations and lessons highlighted by past incidents and disasters. Specific areas of study include, but are not limited to, organisations' technology, human resources, environment and emergency management. The principles introduced in the unit can be applied enterprise wide and in many diverse industries.

Prior Knowledge &/or Skills OR Pre-Requisite Unit(s) It is important that your expectations of BFA522, and online teaching and learning in particular, are realistic. Your expectations will be sought and discussed at the start of the Semester. BFA522 staff members are learning facilitators who will assist you in your learning, for example by pointing you to learning resources. However, we are not responsible for your learning - you are. An important attitude you will need to bring to BFA522 to be successful is willingness to take responsibility for your own learning, progress and performance. BFA522 assumes basic competence in computer systems and the Microsoft Office applications, Word and Excel. If this is not the case you will need to acquire or review these skills by the end of Week 2 using training resources available to you. Resources include Microsoft Online Training, accessed through a link on the left of the webpage at: http://www.utas.edu.au/service-desk/a-z-listing, and other diverse resources accessed via: http://www.utas.edu.au/service-desk. This Unit requires use of the Harvard referencing style. Refer to the resources pointed to later in this Outline. You will need an understanding of plagiarism and how to avoid it. Please refer to the statement later in this document about plagiarism, and to: http://www.utas.edu.au/plagiarism/. During this Unit you will be asked to complete sub-modules on paraphrasing, referencing and citing. You will also need Functional competence in speaking, listening, reading and writing English appropriate for a graduate program. Library skills For further assistance refer to the resources at: http://www.utas.edu.au/library/help/teach-yourself-online Advise the Unit Coordinator by the end of Week 2 if you have not acquired the prior knowledge and or skills listed above.

Learning Expectations and Teaching Strategies/Approach The University is committed to a high standard of professional conduct in all activities, and holds its commitment and responsibilities to its students as being of paramount importance. Likewise, it holds expectations about the responsibilities students have as they pursue their studies within the special environment the University offers. The University’s Code of Conduct for Teaching and Learning states:

Students are expected to participate actively and positively in the teaching/learning environment. They must attend classes when and as required, strive to maintain steady progress within the subject or unit framework, comply with workload expectations, and submit required work on time.

These are some of the expectations we have of you as a student enrolled in this unit: Emails to the BFA522 Unit Coordinator will be checked and replied twice a week. Additional information relating to sending emails to staff and receiving replies is outlined elsewhere in this document. Where an email seeks information that has already been made available, or if you have a query of a general nature, you will be asked to make a post to the BFA522 Q&A/Self help board on MyLO instead, where all students will have access to a response. While this Q&A/Self help board will be monitored twice a week by the Unit Coordinator, all students are invited to respond to a query that appears there.

Some of you may work in an environment where a sophisticated risk management culture exists, such as in the financial services or health industries. The emphasis of this Unit is to develop your understanding of risk management processes for application in any environment. This understanding is more readily acquired in contexts that have a less sophisticated risk management culture. Therefore, BFA522 assessment will focus on small organisations, rather than on large organisations in health or other industries where highly refined risk management processes are already in place. However the knowledge and skills you learn will be transferable to large, highly risk-averse industries and organisations. This approach to settings used for BFA522 assessment is also more equitable given the diverse BFA522 student cohort.

It is expected that students will submit assessment for the Unit by the specified dates and times, unless alternative arrangements have been approved. It is further expected that assessments will be submitted in the stipulated format.

Completing the readings and online activities associated with the relevant modules is essential to progress in this Unit. As an example, the major assessment for this Unit draws upon prior readings and online activities, and cannot be answered from your general knowledge. In particular the risk assessment methods presented in the first five modules will be applied during the remainder of the Unit. It is not realistic to expect to complete the major assessment successfully without being very familiar with, and apply, the methods and content from the first five modules.

Outcomes sought from the Unit are defined more broadly than success in the assessments. Outcomes include the attainment of generic graduate attributes through your engagement and contribution. In addition to the development of content-related skills, you will also be challenged to develop or enhance generic graduate skills sought by employers.

On-line interaction provides opportunity to deepen your understanding of the concepts covered in the Unit. Completion of online activities, engaging with your classmates and preparing for these activities parallel the requirements for face-to-face students who prepare for and attend tutorials, and engage in learning activities while there.

In order to pass the unit you must achieve an overall mark of at least 50%, and complete all assessment components.

In order to meet these expectations, you will need to take responsibility for your own motivation, participation and progress.

A substantial amount of self-study is required for this unit. The expectation is that you will spend ten hours each week on BFA522 during the semester, including doing the readings and participating in online activities. You will not be able to make an effective contribution to the online activities, and progress in the Unit, unless this self-study is undertaken on an ongoing, weekly basis. In previous deliveries of BFA522, students who attempted to leave the assessment preparation and study until the last weeks of Semester were not successful.

Note that latter parts of the Unit develop themes from, and require an understanding of methods from, the previous modules. Therefore access to a module requires completion of the previous module. The modules and the assessment are sequential, and are designed to be undertaken in the order presented.

Your work is flexible in that you are free to manage your weekly study timetable as you choose. But as submission deadlines apply to assessable items, you will need to plan your time to meet the submission deadlines for assessable tasks. To help you achieve this, target completion dates are provided in the Unit Schedule on the last page of this Unit Outline.

With the exception of the Standards (described below in the Text section), all the unit materials and tasks are provided to you within MyLO, or you will be pointed towards other online resources.

You are required to work your way through all the documents, activities and links within each of the modules in turn. Do not skip any modules or attempt to complete modules out of order because the materials are cumulative - that is, each one contributes to knowledge you will need to succeed in the next.

Although there may be minor differences, each module will generally involve:

a) An introductory presentation and slide handouts. The presentation will describe the objectives of the module, introduce the relevant concepts and provide guidance on how to proceed through the other materials and tasks. You should use the slide handouts as a framework for your notes, and fill out the notes further as you proceed through the remaining tasks for each module.

b) Reading parts of the Standards and/or materials provided, or pointed to, on MyLO; c) Reflecting on the concepts and issues you have encountered (independent note taking, MyLO

discussions, etc); d) Interacting with other students; e) Completing other activities shown in the Module folder; and f) Independently exploring issues arising from the topic to consolidate learning, or that you feel

might be useful for your assessable work.

Work, Health and Safety (WH&S) The University is committed to providing a safe and secure teaching and learning environment. In addition to specific requirements of this unit, you should refer to the University’s policy at: www.utas.edu.au/work-health-safety.

Learning Resources

Prescribed Text/Software A prescribed text is a resource that you must have access to for the purposes of studying this unit.

There is no prescribed textbook for this Unit. However, you are required to read the following standards and handbooks, which together meet the objectives of a best-practice text for the purposes of this Unit:

1. AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management - Principles and guidelines 2. SA/SNZ HB 436:2013 Risk management guidelines—Companion to AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 3. SA/SNZ HB 89:2013 - Risk management - Guidelines on risk assessment techniques

The standard and handbooks listed above set out the approach and methods that will be followed in BFA522. Within some of the modules we will also refer to other more specialised standards.

You may purchase printed copies of these documents from Standards Australia, or you have online access to them through the UTAS library. You may prefer to print them yourself.

To purchase, visit: http://www.standards.org.au/DevelopingStandards/BuyingaStandard.aspx, from where you will also find background information about Standards and their development.

To access the documents online

Access the Standards Australia database via the UTAS library:

1. At http://www.utas.edu.au/library, click `Databases' (you may be prompted to enter your UTAS username and password to access the documents).

2. Click the link to 'S' and scroll down to Standards Online Premium. 3. Then search for each document by entering “31000”, “436” and so on, one at a time. Search

the results to find the precise document you need. 4. Click "view document", which will give you the choice of whether to view online, save or print.

While the standards may be saved or printed they are subject to copyright law. Once saved, the documents will expire after several days. Although it is possible for you to print a copy of the standards only for the purpose of undertaking your study in BFA522, it is not permitted to reproduce or distribute the standards in any way for any other purpose. It is not possible for a BFA522 staff member or fellow student to send you an electronic or printed copy of any of the standards for the same reason.

The licence permits only two viewers at any one time. It is possible that other users at the University of Tasmania may be viewing one of the documents when you try to access it. If so, please access it at a later time.

Recommended Texts/Software A recommended text is a resource that you can use to broaden your understanding of the topics covered in this unit. You may also find a recommended text helpful when conducting research for assignments.

You will be referred to other resources associated with the modules.

Learning to use MyLO When you log into MyLO, you will see a unit called Getting Started with MyLO. Enter this unit to learn more about MyLO, and to practise using its features.

MyLO Expectations 1. Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of conduct across all modes of

communication with staff and other students. Penalties may be imposed if the Unit Coordinator believes that, in any instance or mode of communication, your language or content is inappropriate or offensive. MyLO is a public forum. Due levels of respect, professionalism and high ethical standards are expected of students at all times.

2. Submission of assessment tasks via MyLO presumes that students have read, understood and abide by the requirements relating to academic conduct, and in particular, those requirements relating to plagiarism. All work submitted electronically is presumed to be “signed-off” by the student submitting as their own work. Any breach of this requirement will lead to student misconduct processes.

3. MyLO is an Internet service for teaching and learning provided by the University. It is expected

that you check your units in MyLO for updates at least once a day.

Using MyLO for BFA522 IMPORTANT! Before you are provided with access to your unit’s MyLO resources, you must complete the Student Agreement form. To do this:

1. Access the unit’s MyLO site. 2. Locate the Begin Here folder and click on it to open it. You can find the Begin Here folder by

scrolling down until you see Content Browser OR by clicking on the Content button.

OR

3. Once you have opened the Begin Here folder, click on the Student Agreement file.

OR

4. Read the terms, then check the I agree box. You should now be able to access all available unit content on MyLO. You only need to do this once in each MyLO unit.

Other important resources on MyLO You are expected to regularly check MyLO for any updates in relation to the unit. MyLO has been incorporated into the delivery of this unit to enhance your learning experience, by providing access to up-to-date course materials, and allowing for online discussion. In addition to the lecture slides which are uploaded on MyLO on a weekly basis, other unit-related materials such as supplementary readings and assessment guides can also be accessed on MyLO. You are also expected to engage in active discussion about issues related to the unit through the discussion forums and chat rooms that are available on MyLO: this is particularly helpful for distance students who may utilise the facilities available on MyLO to contact their fellow distance students and form groups to complete any group assessment tasks for this unit. In this regard, MyLO should be treated as the unit's critical platform for learning and communication.

Student Feedback via eVALUate At the conclusion of this unit, you will be asked to provide online responses to a number of matters relating to the learning and teaching within the unit. You are asked to respond honestly to these questions, as all information received is used to enhance the delivery of future offerings.

Details of Teaching Arrangements

Distance Mode BFA522, Risk Management, is a resource-dependent, web-dependent flexible Unit. This means that no face-to-face classes or meetings are scheduled for this Unit, and you will need reliable, regular use of a computer and an internet connection to access materials and to interact with your classmates and Unit Coordinator.

All interaction is online. You MUST maintain regular contact. The Unit Coordinator takes the role of learning facilitator, and will monitor MyLO closely throughout semester, but you are responsible for ensuring you participate and meet the requirements set out in this Unit Outline.

Your work is flexible in that you are free to manage your daily study timetable as you choose within the arrangements specified for this Unit. However, you will need to plan your time to meet the submission deadlines set out later in this document, which include regular contributions from Week 1 and other assessment submissions. See the Unit Schedule on the last page of this Unit Outline.

Working through the information resources (and completing the required readings) is the equivalent of preparing for, and attending, a weekly double lecture, as is usual in a face-to-face unit. It is anticipated that this work will take you around 4 hours of your weekly 10-hour time commitment to this Unit, assuming you have the appropriate English language skills. Working through the online activities, making posts associated with them, interacting with other students relating to those activities, and preparing for that work, is the equivalent of attending a one-hour tutorial each week in a face-to-face delivery mode, and preparing for those tutorials. It is anticipated that this work will take you around 2 hours of your weekly 10-hour time commitment to this Unit, assuming you have the appropriate English language skills.

Online audio-conferences will be held at key points, including near the start of the Semester, to introduce the Unit, and also later to discuss assessment items. The number of these audio-conferences, as well as their days and times, will be decided jointly by students. These conferences will be recorded.

Online Activities (Online details) Apart from the six hours you will need to spend each week for BFA522 in preparing and undertaking the equivalent of lectures and tutorials, an additional four-hours a week will be needed to be successful at this Unit. That additional time will be needed for reviewing BFA522 material after your first exposure to it, undertaking wider independent searches and reading, taking part in audio-conferences with your classmates, interacting with other students online, completing assessable work and other activities. Many of your activities for BFA522 will undertaken in online groups. On-line activities provide you an opportunity for deep, meaningful and reflective consideration of issues, through shared learning.

Online activities parallel the style of learning that is likely to take place in the workplace, where employees learn incrementally, with and from each other. Online activities are also designed to develop your generic skills for the workplace. Moreover, working in online groups and developing a sense of community enables sharing of expertise from the work experiences and past training of your classmates, and counters isolation.

Communication, Consultation and Appointments TO KEEP UP WITH ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING THIS UNIT Check the MyLO Announcements tool at least once every two days. The unit Announcements will appear when you first enter our unit’s MyLO site. Alternatively, click on the Announcements button (towards the top of the MyLO screen) at any time. WHEN YOU HAVE A QUESTION Other students may have the same question that you have. Please go to the Ask the Class Discussion Forum on our course’s MyLO site. Check the posts that are already there – someone may have answered your question already. Otherwise, add your question as a new topic. Students are encouraged to support each other using this forum – if you can answer someone’s question, please do. We will attempt to respond to questions within 48 business hours. If your question is related to a personal issue or your performance in the unit, please contact the appropriate teaching staff member by email instead. WHEN YOU HAVE AN ISSUE THAT WILL IMPACT ON YOUR STUDIES OR THE SUBMISSION OF AN ASSESSMENT TASK If you have a personal question related to your studies or your grades, please contact teaching staff by email. For general questions about the unit, please add them to the Ask the Class Discussion forum on the unit’s MyLO site. This way, other students can also benefit from the answers. A NOTE ABOUT EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE You are expected to check your UTAS email (WebMail) on a regular basis – at least three times per week. To access your WebMail account, login using your UTAS username and password at https://webmail.utas.edu.au/. You are strongly advised not to forward your UTAS emails to an external email service (such as gmail or Hotmail). In the past, there have been significant issues where this has occurred, resulting in UTAS being blacklisted by these email providers for a period of up to one month. To keep informed, please use your UTAS email as often as possible. We receive a lot of emails. Be realistic about how long it might take for us to respond. Allow at least TWO (2) business days to reply. Staff are not required to respond to emails where students do not directly identify themselves, are threatening or offensive, or come from external (non-UTAS) email accounts.

Assessment Item 1 Nine module preparation submissions

Task Description: All BFA552 students will submit nine assessable module preparation activities during the Semester for Assessment Item 1. These online preparation submissions are to be completed by each student within a set period following a schedule that appears below. Each will have a start and finish date and time. It will not be possible to submit after the closing date and time, or to “make up” for a missed submission, apart from in exceptional circumstances supported by independent documentation, with agreement from the Unit Coordinator.

The online submissions are designed to assist you to keep current with this Unit, and to prepare you for the relevant module. They should be viewed as being similar to preparation submitted for a face-to-face tutorial. To provide feedback to assist you in your learning during the Semester, two exemplary posts will be selected from BFA522 students after each online submission for Assessment 1 is due. You will be able to review the appropriateness and quality of your own submission by comparison against the exemplary submission/s.

use of paraphrasing, citations and references where relevant) c) not submitted d) emailed to a staff member, or e) submitted after the due date.

Each submission will also need to meet minimum assessment criteria that will be stated when each task is released. Details of the nine preparation tasks will be provided separately. While a marking rubric will not be provided for these activities, the marking is explained below. The decision of BFA522 staff members regarding whether submissions meet these criteria will be final.

At least two of the nine online preparation tasks will be marked at random during the Semester using the following criteria:

0 marks > Does not meet all the minimum requirements stated

0.5 marks > Satisfies all the minimum requirements stated and is of an acceptable quality, but with some flaws

1 mark > Satisfies all the minimum requirements stated and is of excellent quality,e.g. goes further in a way that is relevant.

You will not know which of your nine individual posts, or how many, will be marked until the end of the Semester.

As an example, assuming two online submissions are marked as random, but you have not made one of those submissions, your maximum possible individual mark for the nine activities will be 50% of the total for Asessment 1. Where you have not made a response for your second online activity chosen at random, you will gain 0% for Assessment 1, even though you may have submitted responses for the seven other activities that were not selected at random to be marked. The total marks for each student for Assessment 1 will be calculated out of 10%.

The exemplary posts selected for illustration purposes will provide you with feedback for each activity.

The approaches you learn or review from the submodules about how to paraphrase, cite and reference are expected to be implemented for Assessment Item 1.

Assessment Item 2 Ongoing group activity added to over several modules, supporting completion of capstone assignment

Task Description: In Week 2, all BFA552 students will be allocated to a small online group, in which they will undertake Assessment Item 2.

Assessment Item 2 will evaluate, in a small online group over several modules, the application of risk knowledge. This assessment will support completion of the future capstone assignment. Assessment 2 will evaluate group function and implementation of core risk methods, knowledge and other criteria that build towards the Capstone Assignment.

Note that while the knowledge and skills developed in Assessment 2 are directly transferable to the Capstone Assignment, Assessment 2 will provide opportunity to undertake risk assessment in a different context. As the Unit aims to prepare you to carry out risk management in any context, the assessment is designed to give you experience in more than just one context.

Preparation for Assessment 2 will be undertaken in capstone assignment groups. The mark you receive for Assessment Item 2 will incorporate both a group mark component, and an individual mark. Note that other group members will be asked evaluate your contribution.

Task Length 2000 words

Assessment Criteria:

The assessment criteria for Assessment Item 2 will be set out in a separate document. Your work will be marked in accordance with a criterion-referenced marking sheet that will be made available in that document.

Submission will be to the relevant drop box folder on the BFA 522 MyLO site in Word or pdf format only. Submissions made in other formats will not be marked. Assessment Item 2 submissions will be analysed using the plagiarism detection software, TurnItIn, before being marked.

The word length specified with the assessment criteria must be adhered to. Before marking, submissions will be examined for their word length. A penalty of 10% will be applied to all overlength submissions, and the overlength portion may not be marked.

All parts of the assignment are included in the word length, including title page, references and appendices.

The approaches you learn or review from the submodules about how to plagiarise, cite and reference will be used in Assessment Item 3.

Assessment Item 3 - Capstone assignment

Task Description: This assignment will be undertaken in small groups. It will bring together risk management issues in a report that will require you to demonstrate an understanding of the risk issues discussed, and the preparation of a risk management framework using methods consistent with the standards and presented in BFA522. That is, you will be required to undertake a recognised form of risk assessment for a specified context.

The capstone assignment will assess both an individual component undertaken by each group member, as well as the collective quality of the total output. Note that other group members will be asked to evaluate your contribution.

This form of assessment has been chosen deliberately to replicate the nature of risk management as undertaken in industry, while still enabling individual student effort and attainment to be evaluated.

The Capstone Assignment is an examination equivalent. Full details will be provided in a separate document made available later in the Semester. The capstone assignment brings together risk management issues, some of which will not have been considered in the Unit before that date. Note that Assessment Item 2 has been designed to prepare students to complete the Capstone Assignment.

You will be advised by the University of your overall result for BFA522 when final results for the Semester are formally released by the University to all students. You will not receive information about your Capstone Assignment result until that date. Consistent with the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics' policy for reviewing examination papers, Capstone Assignment feedback will be available upon request.

Task Length 3000 words

Assessment Criteria:

Your work will be marked in accordance with a criterion-referenced marking sheet that will be made available on MyLO at the time that details of Assessment Task 3 are released.

Your group's Capstone Assignment must be uploaded by one group member only to the Capstone Assignment Submission dropbox folder on the Unit's MyLO Assessment Folder by the due date and time. Note that all capstone assignments, including the individual and collective components for each group, will be evaluated by plagiarism detection software, TurnItIn, before marking begins. Submissions made in formats other than Word or pdf will not be marked.

The word length specified with the assessment criteria must be adhered to. Before marking submissions will be examined for their word length. A penalty of 10% will be applied to all overlength submissions, and the overlength portion may not be marked.

All parts of the assignment are included in the word length, including title pages, reference lists and appendices.

Your final examination for this unit will be held during the scheduled examination period as indicated by Student Administration in correspondence to you. Examinations will normally be scheduled Monday to Saturday inclusive. Examinations may be held during the day or evening and students should consult the university information which will be made available towards the end of semester. Distance students will be required to sit the final exam during the examination period either at the nearest UTAS campus or, in the case of interstate or overseas students, at an approved centre. The Exams Office will contact distance students at the beginning of semester with information about nominating an exam venue. You are advised to make any necessary arrangements with employers now for time off during the examination period to sit this examination. Your participation at the scheduled time is not negotiable unless there are exceptional circumstances. Note that you will be expected to sit the examination at your recorded study centre. To find out more go to the Exams Office website: http://www.utas.edu.au/exams/home.

Submission of Assessment Items

Lodging Assessment Items Assignments must be submitted electronically through the relevant assignment drop box in MyLO. You must ensure that your name, student ID, unit code, tutorial time and tutor’s name (if applicable) are clearly marked on the first page. If this information is missing, the assignment will not be accepted and, therefore, will not be marked. Where relevant, Unit Coordinators may also request you to submit a paper version of your assignment. You will be advised by the Unit Coordinator of the appropriate process relevant to your campus (Hobart, Launceston or Cradle Coast). Please remember that you are responsible for lodging your assessment items on or before the due date and time. We suggest you keep a copy. Even in a perfect system, items sometimes go astray.

Late Assessment and Extension Policy

In this Policy:

1. (a) ‘day’ or ‘days’ includes all calendar days, including weekends and public holidays; (b) ‘late’ means after the due date and time; and (c) ‘assessment items’ includes all internal non-examination based forms of assessment

2. This Policy applies to all students enrolled in TSBE Units at whatever Campus or geographical location.

3. Students are expected to submit assessment items on or before the due date and time specified in the relevant Unit Outline. The onus is on the student to prove the date and time of submission.

4. Students who have a medical condition or special circumstances may apply for an extension. Requests for extensions should, where possible, be made in writing to the Unit Coordinator on or before the due date. Students will need to provide independent supporting documentation to substantiate their claims.

5. Late submission of assessment items will incur a penalty of 10% of the total marks possible for that piece of assessment for each day the assessment item is late unless an extension had been granted on or before the relevant due date.

6. Assessment items submitted more than five (5) days late will not be accepted. 7. Academic staff do NOT have the discretion to waive a late penalty, subject to clause 4 above.

Academic Referencing and Style Guide

Before starting your assignments, you are advised to familiarise yourself with the following electronic resources.

The first is the Harvard Referencing System Style Guide, which can be accessed from the UTAS library: http://utas.libguides.com/content.php?pid=27520&sid=199808. The Harvard style is the appropriate referencing style for this unit and the guide provides information on presentation of assignments, including referencing styles. In your written work you will need to support your ideas by referring to scholarly literature, works of art and/or inventions. It is important that you understand how to correctly refer to the work of others and maintain academic integrity.

Failure to appropriately acknowledge the ideas of others constitutes academic dishonesty (plagiarism), a matter considered by the University of Tasmania as a serious offence.

The second is the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics’ Writing Assignments: A Guide, which can be accessed at: http://www.utas.edu.au/business-and-economics/student-resources. This guide provides you with useful information about the structure and style of assignments in the TSBE.

Review of Assessment and Results Review of Assessment is available to all students once the University has released the final result for a unit. If you are dissatisfied with your final result, you may apply to have it reviewed.

Review of Assessment consists of re-marking the final exam (where applicable), checking the addition of all marks, and a check to ensure that all marks have been included in the final result.

Applications for a review of assessment are due within 10 working days of the release of the final result in the unit. If you have passed the unit you must pay a $50 fee.

Please read and follow the directions provided by the University at: http://www.utas.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/314622/Review-of-Assessment.pdf

Academic Misconduct and Plagiarism

Academic misconduct includes cheating, plagiarism, allowing another student to copy work for an assignment or an examination, and any other conduct by which a student: (a) seeks to gain, for themselves or for any other person, any academic advantage or advancement

to which they or that other person are not entitled; or (b) improperly disadvantages any other student.

Students engaging in any form of academic misconduct may be dealt with under the Ordinance of Student Discipline. This can include imposition of penalties that range from a deduction/cancellation of marks to exclusion from a unit or the University. Details of penalties that can be imposed are available in the Ordinance of Student Discipline – Part 3 Academic Misconduct, see http://www.utas.edu.au/university-council/university-governance/ordinances. Plagiarism is a form of cheating. It is taking and using someone else’s thoughts, writings or inventions and representing them as your own, for example: • using an author’s words without putting them in quotation marks and citing the source; • using an author’s ideas without proper acknowledgment and citation; or • copying another student’s work. It also means using one’s own work from previously submitted assessment items if repeating a unit. If you have any doubts about how to refer to the work of others in your assignments, please consult your lecturer or tutor for relevant referencing guidelines, and the academic integrity resources on the web at http://www.utas.edu.au/academic-integrity/The intentional copying of someone else’s work as one’s own is a serious offence punishable by penalties that may range from a fine or deduction/cancellation of marks and, in the most serious of cases, to exclusion from a unit, a course, or the University. The University and any persons authorised by the University may submit your assessable works to a plagiarism checking service, to obtain a report on possible instances of plagiarism. Assessable works may also be included in a reference database. It is a condition of this arrangement that the original author’s permission is required before a work within the database can be viewed. For further information on this statement and general referencing guidelines, see www.utas.edu.au/plagiarism/ or follow the link under ‘Policy, Procedures and Feedback’ on the Current Students homepage.
