Introduction.
Producing a product offers an opportunity to learn and develop skills in choosing an appropriate
product to make. Valuable entrepreneurial ideas and skills may be gained from being involved
in a production activity, even if on a small scale.
In the machine shop we will be producing a plumb bob as part of your NVQ level two in using
lathes; this will introduce you into simple production processes, planning procedures and quality
control procedures.
Task 1.
Attached to this assignment is an engineering drawing of the plumb bob and a planning sheet.
List the steps needed to make the product, identify the materials & equipment required &
identify any relevant safety points.
Planning Sheet.

Task 2b.
Identify any new skills that might be acquired in order to make the plumb bob.

Task 3.
Whilst you are producing the plumb bob body your tutor will check that you are demonstrating
appropriate levels of safety by filling in the sheet below.
Student demonstrates that they: Y/N. Comments:

In industry there are certain tolerances and standards that a product should conform to. Using a
micrometer, vernier calliper and visual inspection check the plumb bob and fill out the boxes
below.
