The flag of the People's Republic of China uses red as its background and bright yellow for its five stars. The red background symbolizes the blood of heroes who died during the revolution. The yellow represents the brightness. In addition, the stars are yellow so that they will stand out brightly against the red ground.

The larger star stands for the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the four smaller stars that surround the big star symbolize the four classes. The five stars mean the great unity of the Chinese people under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. The flag was first raised in Tiananmen Square on October 1st, 1949, upon the formal announcement that People's Republic of China was founded.
