INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING DISTANCEMEASURING DISTANCE

Chain- composed of 100 or 150 piecesof galvanized mild steel wire 4 mm indiameter called links. The ends of eachlink are bent into a loop and connectedtogether by three oval rings. The outsideof the handle is the zero point or the endpoint of the chain. Metallic tags or talliesare fixed at distinctive points (for metricchains) to facilitate quick reading offractions of a chain.

TYPES OF CHAIN

Metric surveying chains- available inlengths 20m & 30 m. To read the fractionsgof the chain, tallies are fixed at every 5mlength and small brass rings are providedg g pat every m length. A grove is cut on theoutside surface of the handle to facilitateholding the arrows in position. The lengthof the chain is marked over the handle.

Steel band- consists of a ribbon of steelS ee ba d co s s s o a bbo o s eewith a brass swivel handle at each end. Itis 20m or 30m long and 16mm wide. It isgwound on an open steel cross. The bandis divided by brass studs at every 0.2my yand numbered at every 1m and last linkbeing subdivided into cm and mm. Brassgtallies are fixed at every 5m. It is lighterand easier to handle than the chainhowever it is easily broken. It cannot beeasily read and also cannot be easilyy yrepaired in the field.

Arrows – To mark the end of each chainduring the process of chaining. They aremade of hardened and tempered steelwire 4mm in diameter and minimumtensile strength of 700 n/mm2. They are400mm in length and pointed at one endto insert in the ground and bent like ringat the another end for facility of carrying.

(2)metric woven metallic tape- availablein lengths of 2,5,10,20,30 and 50m. Thetape is reinforced over a length ofatleast 10cm by leather strip or plasticmaterial.

Pegs – wooden pegs are used to mark the positions ofstations.stations.Ranging rods- used for marking the positions of stations andfor ranging lines.Ranging poles- similar to ranging rods. CHAINING A LINELeader- chainman at the forward end of the chain is calledleader. The duties of a leader are:-

CHAINING ON SLOPING GROUNDGROUND

Cumulative errors – occur in the same direction and tend toadd up or accumulate. It is proportional to length(l).(A) positive errors- (making the measured lengths more thanthe actual) are caused by:-

(i) The length of the chain or tape is shorter than the standard.(ii) The slope correction is not applied to the length measured

along the sloping ground.(iii) The sag correction is not applied when the chain or tape is
