Technology and Product Descriptions

Aurora’s comprehensive Unified PON portfolio includes key elements providing world-class OLT solutions, enabling our customers to deploy PON in their existing and new networks with ease. Our mission-specific line of OLT platforms supports diverse requirements giving our customers the flexibility in form factor to support their unique networks.

Aurora provides high-density chassis solutions for centrally located, environmentally controlled facilities, maximizing the number of subscribers supported by a rack-mounted package. For scaled growth, as deployment requirements expand, the compact chassis OLT (COLT) is suitable for cabinet installations. For hardened, node deployments the Node OLT module provides the ability to reach customers in existing deployments where node housings are already in service.

Each platform provides resilient 10Gbps uplinks for integration into the network services infrastructure, and service assurance through complete QoS and security features. Management system implementation is provided via options in provisioning and operational system integration through the Aurora Element Management System (EMS), or the AurOS DPoE™ provisioning system application, providing exceptional flexibility in achieving highly-scaled deployments.

Trident7 Chassis

The Trident7 high-density universal OLT platform provides support for both EPON and GPON standards in a single chassis. With the integrated backplane providing an IP-based, dual-star topology, the Trident7 resiliently switches through central aggregation modules to the upstream network and downstream through PON technology-specific interface modules to subtended ONT devices. Chassis module types include the following:

Platform Management Module (PMM) for chassis management

Platform Switch Modules (PSMs) for chassis traffic aggregation

Platform Interface Modules (PIMs) for access technology specific traffic distribution

Platform Management Module (PMM)

The PMM is the control module that coordinates the operation of other modules in the OLT, as well as subtended ONTs, and serves as a focal point for management of the system and provisioning of services. The PMM operates directly with the EMS to apply configuration to all parts of the chassis and subtended ONTs upon the receipt of a service provisioning request. The PMM includes its own 100BASE-T network and serial interfaces for management operations, as well as programmable input/output connections for central office and housekeeping functions.

Platform Switch Module (PSM)

The PSMs aggregate all access subscriber traffic onto GE or 10 GE uplink interfaces. Two switch modules provide redundancy and increased service network capacity.

ITU G.984 GPON Platform Interface Module (PIM-8984)

The PIM-8984 module, with eight PON ports, each supporting a downstream data rate of 2488 Mbps and upstream data rate of 1244 Mbps, provides standard GPON connectivity to ONTs and subtended customer premise equipment. One Trident7 OLT supports up to eight of these double-width modules which utilize standard ITU G.984 SFPs for their PON interfaces. With a 1x64 split, a fully loaded chassis can support 4096 ONT devices, fully utilizing the Aurora EMS service provisioning platform for management.

IEEE 802.3ah EPON 4-Port Platform Interface Module (PIM-4802)

The PIM-4802 module, with four PON ports, each supporting a bi-directional data rate of 1000 Mbps, provides standard EPON connectivity to ONTs and subtended customer premise equipment. One Trident7 OLT supports up to eighteen of these single-width modules which utilize standard 1000BASE-PX20 SFPs for their PON interfaces. With a 1x64 split, a fully loaded chassis can support 4608 ONT devices.

IEE 802.3ah EPON 8-Port Platform Interface Module (PIM-8802)

The PIM-8802 module, with eight PON ports, each supporting a standard bi-directional data rate of 1000 Mbps and additional Turbo-mode EPON capability for a downstream data rate of 2 Gbps, provides standard EPON connectivity to ONTs and subtended customer premise equipment. One Trident7 OLT supports up to eighteen of these single-width modules which utilize standard 1000BASE-PX20 SFPs for their PON interfaces. With a 1x64 split, a fully loaded chassis can support 9216 ONT devices.

The PIM-8802 module, when installed in a COLT chassis and utilizing the AurOS DPoE provisioning software provides a full DPoE compliant provisioning system. Supporting 512 ONT devices with a 1x64 way split.

Compact OLT (COLT)

The Trident7 COLT houses a single EPON or GPON interface module and is temperature hardened for field cabinet deployments. It provides a cost effective solution for lower density, remote residential or commercial applications where client services require high availability scalable PON technology but deployment models favor a smaller OLT form factor.

Node PON OLT

Node PON OLT leverages the Aurora node and VHub™ platforms to provide a migration path from HFC to PON and delivery of IP services over time, cost-effectively serving commercial and ultimately residential customers with IEEE 802.3ah EPON in a node-ready environment. Node PON OLT conserves fiber by utilizing standard CWDM or DWDM GE links combined with the HFC optical transport between the headend and node. The standard GE uplink connections terminate in the headend aggregation switch to hand-off to the operator’s core IP network. The Node PON OLT PON ports are utilized via standard 1000BASE-PX20 SFPs. The PON interfaces also provide Turbo-mode EPON capability. With a 1x64 split, a fully loaded Node PON OLT can support up to 256 ONT devices. Service management and provisioning are provided via the Aurora EMS or AurOS DPoE centralized server-based provisioning system.
