  • Northern Iowa Joins MAC CLEVELAND, OHIO -Three universities, including UNI , joined the Mid-American Conference in 2012 with five-year agreement .

    UNI and the Univer ity of Mis-ouri will join the MAC for the

    conference tournament only for the 2012-13 ea on and then participate fully in regular season and tournament action for the next four consecutive year (2013-14 sea on through 2016-17 academic ea on) . Old Dominion will join the MAC for the regular season and tourna-ment action in the 2013-14 season through the 2017-18 academic ea on.

    "We are excited to make new and lasting rivalries for our athletes and fans. With the teams that exi t and the ones joining the conference, it will make the MAC one the premjer wrestling conferences in the country," aid UNI head coach Doug Schwab .

    With thi increa e in wre tling member rup , the MAC will be-come the third largest Division I wrestling league in the nation only behind the Big Ten and the Eastern Intercollegiate Wre tling

    Association.

    "After significant study and discu ion by our member in ti-tution · coache and administra-tor the Mid-American Con-ference ha made a move that will take what is already a very strong wrestling conference and make it one of the elite wrestling conferences in the country," said Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher, Com-rm sioner of the Mid-American Conference. "I am plea ed to welcome Mi ouri , orthern Iowa , and Old Dominion , their student-athlete , coaches and fan to the MAC in the sport of wrestling."

    In 2012, the MAC ent 24 wrestlers to the 2012 NCAA Champion hip Tournament in St. Loui , where MAC Cham-pion Central Michigan fini hed tied for 13th and Kent State ended 27th in the NCAA Cham-pionship standings. The MAC witnessed three wrestlers earn All -American honors a Central Michigan's Ben Bennett (184 lb.) earned hi third, Kent State's Nie Bedelyon ( 125 lb .) earned hi econd and Ohio ·s Jeremy John on (Hv.t.) earned his first All-American honor.

    of Northern Iowa wrestlers earned Western Wrestling Conference academic honors for the 2011-12 school year.

    Five Panthers Earn All-Conference OREM, UTAH - Three Panthers earned First Team All-Western Wrestling Conference tatus, and two were named to Second Team All-WWC for their accomplish-ment during the 2011-12 sea on. Individuals earned pots on the respective team with their finish at the 2012 NCAA West Regional/ WWC Championships on March 4 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

    Joe Colon (133) , Levi Wolfen-sperger (141) and Blayne Beale

    (285) were awarded First Team All-WWC honors after placing fir t in their respectiYe weight classe at the NCAA West Re-gional. All three are first-time all-conference honorees.

    David Bonin (157) and Ryan Loder (184) earned place on the All-WWC Second Team, a they both placed econd at the We t Re-gional. Bonin has been named to an AJI-WWC Second Team three times during his wrestling career.

  • Doug Schwab pent his first two yeai at UNI developing a strong wre ·tling team that returns five national qualifiers for this eason.

    This season's roster includes eight high school tate champions among the group of newcomers.

    L1St season, his Panthers lost ju tone conference dual and improved on the p1ior ·eason' finish at the NCAA national championship , placing 34th.

    He was among 45 coaches that received full choloru hip to join the fourth annual ational Wrestling Coaches Association Leadership Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Ra., in August 2012.

    In his first season as head coach (2010-11), chwab led the Panthers to their first 12-\\'in eason ince 2003 and helped UNI earn its fourth We tern Wrestling Conference dual championship.

    Schwab i the Panthers' ninth head coach in the program's illu triou hi tory.

    'Doug is going to bring passion and intensity back to UNI wrestling. Panther wrestling has a long and storied hi tory, and Doug has the championship mentality neces ary to re-establish om program as one of the best in the nation ,'' aid University of No1thern Iowa Director of Athletic Troy Dannen upon hiring Schwab.

    "My main job is to get the guy to buy into the Lifestyle -that includes on the mat and in the classroom. I'm looking forward to putting an exciting product on the mat that fans in the Cedar Valley can rally behind and come out and watch ," Schwab said.

    Schwab of Osage, Iowa, served as an as istant wre tling coach with University of Iowa.

    During his tenure at Iowa: • the Hawkeyes to three NCAA and Big Ten team titles • Iowa crowned six NCAA champion , ix Big Ten

    champions, 23 all-American and 24 academic all-Big Ten honorees

    Prior to joining the Iowa staff, Schwab erved two se.1Son (2005-07) as an assi tant coach at Virgina Tech University under Tom Brand . During his tenure with the Hokies, the team won the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a chool-record five wrestlers qualif, for the CA hampionships. Virginia Tech also crowned five conference champion and two all-American , and senior heavyweight Mike Fau t was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year.

    Schwab was a three-time all-American and Big Ten champion for the Hawkeyes from 1998-2001. He won the 199CJ C . title at 141 pounds and fini hed hi collegiate career with 130 wins, which ranks 10th-be tin chool history.

  • Assistant - Third Season

    Mark Schwab

    Former Panther Mark Schwab joined his brother. Doug. on rhe UNI coaching staff, after head coaching stints ar NIACC and Buena Vista University.

    At Buena Vista. Schwab was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year in 2007 and coached the first four-time NCAA All-American in rhe history of BVU wrestling.

    P1ior to B VU , Schwab penr nine year a assistant coach ar the University of Minnesota, helping the program to seven top-three team tini hes at the ·c \ hampionships and two NCAA team title .

    Schwab al o erved as an assistant coach at Purdue from 1991-93.

    Prior to his coaching experience, Schwab was an All-American for the Panthers. ln his initial season as a Panther, Schwab posted a 49-9 record. the most wins by a tme freshman in NCAA hi story, and placed fifth in the 1986 . CAA Divi ion [ Championships. In 1987 , he won the bronze medal in whar was called the World's Toughe t Tournament in Tibli i, Russia. During his redshitt ea on at UNI, Schwab trained for the 1988 U.S. Olympic team and won a bronze medal for the U.S. team at the World Cup event in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Injurie and illness kept Schwab off the mat for more than a year, but Schwab earned his econd AU-American honor as a enior.

    A a prep al O age, chwab wa nearly llawle , winning 106 of 107 matche and capturing four state titles. Schwab also earned three Junior National Freestyle titles and a national championship in the Greco-Roman category. Schwab was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame and Glen Brand Hall of Fame.

    Schwab earned a bachelor's degree from UNI and a master's degree from Minnesota. He returned to Minnesota to earn a second emphasis in po11 psychology.

    Assistant - 12th Season

    Randy Pugh

    Assistant head coach Randy Pugh will enter hi 12th season a a UNI assistant and ha helped develop All-Americans Jarion Beets (174), Eric Hauan (174), Kyle Hansen (184), Jason Payne ( 197), Sean Stender (197) and Paul Hynek (285).

    Pugh trained for international competition following his All-American career for rhe Panther . The Columbus Junction, Iowa, native fini hed in fourth place at the USA World Trials in June 2002 and competed in the Trial again in 2003. In 2002, he won the Sunkist International Open and garnered a third-place fini h al the .S. Open. In 2003, Pugh again achieved All-American status as he placed eighth at the U.S . Open. He also placed third at the Dave Schultz Open in 2003.

    A an athlete at l 1 I, Pugh fini bed fourth at the 2000 NCAA Tournament at 174 pounds, capping a enior eason with a 26-4 record . He was ranked as high a third nationally after upending top-rated Ono 01 on at the Virginia Duals.

    Pugh was a tare high chool champion his senior year before enrolling ar the U.S. aval Academy, where he compiled a 16-8 record hi first year. He Iran fen-ed to U 1I in 1998 and end with a 70- J 7 career record.

    For Pugh , the biggest change from competing on the mat to coaching his former teammates i motivating others.

    "When 1 was on the mar, I was doing what it took to make myself a bener athlete,'· Pugh said. "But as a coach, I am more concerned with what others are doing and helping them improve."

    Pugh's goal for the Panthers is for the athletes to improve every match and continue to be good student-athletes. He graduated from UNI with a degree in industrial technology.

    He and hi wife, Kri ta, are the parents of two daughters , Hayden and Pre ley.

  • Former CAA champion and Janesville, Iowa, native Tolly Thomp on is beginning his 10th season as Panther as i tant coach.

    Thomp on was the strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska before joining the Panther taff as the team ·s conditioning specialist in the 2002-03 season. He was a member of the Panthers' coaching staff during the 1999-2000 sea ons as a volunteer assistant and re urned that role in 2011.

    "The big thing Tolly brings with him is the winning mentality," UNI head coach Doug Schwab said.

    "He wants to get the mo t out of our wrestlers and et very high standard , which fits in very well\: ith

    the mentality of our staff. He i a very demanding coach but deeply cares about each wre tier."

    Thompson earned the 2005 John Smith Award as the Freestyle Wre tler of the Year by USA Wrestling. Thompson won the 2005 and 2006 U.S. World Team Trial to represent the United State at the World Champion hips.

    He placed third at the 2005 World Champion hips (120/264.5 lbs.) in Budapest, Hungary and was a previous member of the USA wrestling Freestyle

    ational Team. After waiting nearly six hours after hi fir t-round los , Thomp on won three straight matche in his first trip to the World Champion hip to claim his first World medal. He capped his medal-winning performance with a 1-0, 1-0 win over pa t 1997 World champion Kuramagomed Kuramagomedov of Russia. Thompson's rally to the bronze propelled the American to an eighth-place fini h in the freestyle competition. Overall, the U.S. team ended the competition with two bronze medals.

    Along with taking a bronze at the 2005 World Cup, Thompson placed second at the Cerro Pelado International and was the 2005 Dave Schultz Memorial International Champion.

    In March 2004, Thompson placed fourth at the Acropolis Tournament in Athens, Greece, in the 120kd/264.5 pound weight. That April, Thompson continued his run for an Olympic bid at the U.S.

    Garrett earned hi bachelor's from Truman State Univer ity in 1995 and his master's from the Univer ity of Oklahoma in 1998.

    He and his wife, Jennifer, have a daugther, Mari a.

    Assistant - 10th Season

    Tolly Thornpoon

    National Champion hips. He wa able to put together a top fini h to qualify for the 2004 Olympic T1ials in Indianapolis. At the trials, Thompson rolled through competition to win the mini-tournament, which placed him in the title bout for an automatic Olympic bid. In a best of three series, Thomp on was defeated by Kerry McCoy 5-3 and 8-0, finishing hi 2004 Olympic run with a econd-place fini h.

    In 2003, he placed second at the U.S. Open and World Team Trials. Thompson also wa the 2002 Sunkist International Open champion and the ew York Athletic Club champion. In his quest to qualify for the 2000 Summer Olympic , he was defeated at the team trials in the emifinal round by world and national champion Stephen Neal of Baker field, Calif.

    During his collegiate tenure, he compiled a career record of 157-21 from 1993 to 1997 as a Husker. Hi 157 win once placed him on the CAA' all-time wins Ji t. As a Hu ker, he became ebraska' sixth national champion as a ophomore in 1995 by def eating U I's Justin Greenlee. He fini bed third at the 1996 and 1997 championships while also winning the Gorrarian Award for the most falls in the lea t time at the 1997 championship . A three-time Big Eight/Big 12 champion, Thomp on was also a three-time WCA All-Star.

    He and hi wife, Tracy, have three daughter , Payton, Bree and Kendall.
