ANGIE REHEI’m a Melbourne-based designer and
illustrator and have been working in the
fashion industry since graduating from
university in the late 80’s.
After years of travelling the world and
designing for some of Australia’s favourite
fashion brands, I saw the light and now make
illustration – my first love – my number one.
Besides keeping up with Patsyfox.com, I
mix freelance work with teaching fashion
illustration and design at RMIT and in my own
boutique classes at The Patsyfox Drawing
Salon. I have a line of Bridal Sketches,
illustrating brides in their beautiful dresses by
commission, and am currently illustrating for
Elle magazine.
I am a gun for hire, whose work can be
found in magazines, print advertisements,
fashion websites, brochures, invitations,
design storyboard presentations, books, trend
forecasting, greeting cards, and stationery.
Mantra? I design-draw-write-photograph,
therefore I am.
Angie Réhe’s Bulldog tops charity auction
in Melbourne
November 5, 2013 On Melbourne Cup Day
I’m sharing with you le creation magnifique of
Melbourne illustrator Angie Réhe.
Her hand-painted french bulldog was
auctioned at the Dress For Success charity
fundraiser in Melbourne last week and fetched
the highest price! “I was literally spitting my
champagne in shock. There was a bidding war
4
between someone in the room, and a woman
in Brisbane who was on the phone – amazing!
I felt rather humbled because there were some
very big name artists there and there was my
little doggy in his cat mask up on the podium.
My doggy does have a good story behind him
also though. Meet The Outsider – He is an
existentialist French bulldog who is in love
with a cat. With his feline mask he tries to get
near her but she runs and he is left to wander
the streets of Paris alone. His heart is broken
but he regrets nothing.
The Outsider wears a classic French tee, his
tattoos represent “love” and “No, I have no
regrets” (Taken from the Edith Piaf song).
He is of course wearing a cat mask, and the
writings on his body are my favourite passages
from the Albert Camus existentialist novel
“The Outsider” (“L’Etranger”). They are
written in the formation of the Paris street
map, with my own silhouette (taken from one
cut in paper of me by a Parisian street artist
a long time ago) marking the spot of the
Arc De Triomphe. A thoroughly French and
thoroughly tortured dog!

just say I’m excited then multiply that by 100!
Wow, how very cool this is! I’m a magazine
junkie – piles of mags literally line my walls, and
I’ve always wanted to see my illustrations inside
some. To see them in ELLE with its creative,
arty feel is very very exciting! They’re also a
pleasure to work with because they appreciate
and enjoy illustration.” Just another reason to
buy it every month or subscribe and enjoy that
divine free face cream… it’s not a tricky decision
really.
Sketchbook – Angie Réhe
The Private Sketchbook of Angie Réhe
I lwove sketchbooks - what a fabulous thing
they are. I take one on all my travels, local
and overseas. I have one to carry around and
record spontaneous ideas, and a couple of years
ago I started a moleskin diary page-to-a-day
sketchbook where I had to draw something of
some sort every day for the year (I got to August
and my wheels fell off but I’m still working
on filling it). They all suffer feast and famine
attention, but they keep going.
My passion for spontaneous sketching started
as a child when our mum would encourage
us to paint murals on the sheds on our farm
growing up. This mural on my bedroom wall
I did when I was supposed to be doing some
much needed DIY on my house – I just drew
and painted directly onto the wall, standing on
a ladder. It was so much fun. My walls are old
plaster that crumbles easily so there’s no stress
about ruining good walls – I love the freedom of
this! I have also painted my kitchen door with
blackboard paint so I can I draw on it and rub it
out as it suits me. I did this sketch while waiting
for someone to pick me up so it was loose and
spontaneous.
So sketching really is part of my life.
The background to this particular sketchbook
is that it covered a little inspirational holiday
I took last June/July 2102. My niece and very
close friend Jaclyn who is an artist and tattoo
artist, was moving to London so we took a trip
together as a last hoorah! We took in every
