Algebra Problems Standardized test problems often ask you to simplify expressions, evaluate expressions, and solve equations.
You may want to review the rules for exponents. For any numbers a and b, and all integers m and n, the following are true.
(am)n amn (ab)m ambm
aman am n aa
m
n am n
Example 1
Evaluate x2 3x 4 if x 2.2 6 12 14
Solution Replace x with 2. Then performthe operations. Remember the rules foroperations using negative numbers.
x2 3x 4 (2)2 3(2) 4 4 (6) 4 4 6 4 14
The answer is D.
Example 2
For which of the following values of x is xx
2
3
the LEAST?1 1 23 4
Solution Notice that the expression withexponents can be simplified. Start bysimplifying it.
xx2
3 1x

Now it is easy to evaluate the expression. The problem asks which value makes theexpression the smallest. If you substitute each value for x in the expression, which gives you the least or smallest number?
It’s easy to check each value. A is 1, B is 1,
C is 12
, D is 13
, and E is 14
. Which of these
numbers is the least? Think of a number line.
Since 1 is the least, the answer is B.
