Undergraduate Summer Research Internship Program (USRIP) MATS UTC USRIP The Mid-Atlantic Transportation Sustainability University Transportation Center (MATS UTC) is coordinating this summer research internship program. Selected applicants will have the opportunity to work with a faculty member or graduate student on one or two projects at one of our consortium universities or VTRC, the Virginia Transportation Research Council. Please see last year’s UVA End of Summer Symposium Page for example projects spanning water resources, structures and transportation and traffic. Program Description Program dates. May 31-July 29, 2016 Students will have the opportunity of pursuing research in any one of the six universities within the MATS UTC consortium: University of Delaware, Marshall University, Morgan State University, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech; or at the Virginia Transportation Research Center (VTRC), VDOT’s research arm located in Charlottesville. Each student will be paired with a faculty or graduate student mentor and one or two projects. These projects are funded by various state and federal entities such as state DOTs, US DOT, and NSF. Expectations. Students are expected to work 40 hours per week for the 9-week period. Students will participate in at least one weekly meeting with their cohorts. Transportation tours and other activities will take place throughout the program. UVA researchers and VDOT interns working at the Virginia Transportation Research Council will meet together throughout the summer. During the final week of the program, students will create a poster, give an oral presentation on their research, and submit a final report. Eligibility. Juniors or seniors are eligible if currently enrolled in an undergraduate program closely related to transportation and will receive degrees no earlier than December 2016. Applicants must demonstrate a desire to pursue graduate studies and/or a career in transportation and are required to have excellent analytical and communication skills. Students from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Compensation. Students will receive a $4000 stipend. Students coming from other universities will be provided with housing. A limited number of meal stipends may be available for federal-aid eligible students. Application Procedure & Deadlines.
