The Summer Teaching Fellowship (STF) is a unique, highly competitive teacher preparation program. STF is designed to introduce college juniors of color who are passionate about student success to teaching in Uncommon's classrooms. “STF was the first time I had been around this many people who were as passionate as I was about urban education reform. Fellows work hard – Fellows teach for 7 weeks in an Uncommon school. Work days are Monday-Friday, from 7:30 – 4:00 PM. Fellows grow personally and professionally – 3-4 evenings a week, fellows have professional development sessions. Fellows are supported by a mentor teacher and the STF program staff. Fellows are paid – Fellows receive a $3,500 stipend, unlimited access to public transportation, and free housing. Fellows have fun – Uncommon provides a range of interesting social and cultural events to build cohort community. Uncommon Schools recognizes the importance of building a talented staff of teachers who reflect the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our scholars. STF is part of Uncommon's commitment to attracting, hiring, and retaining teachers from underrepresented backgrounds in order to enrich our scholars' learning experiences.

What does the fellowship look like?

STF Program Requirements:

College junior (undergraduate) expected to

graduate in spring 2013

Eligible to work in the US

Minimum GPA of 3.0

Full availability from the first week of June to

the last week of July 2012

Where is the program located?

STF is currently offered in New York City and Boston, and may expand to include

our Rochester and Newark schools.

What’s the application process?

In order to be considered for STF, you must submit an application by March 1,

2012. From November 2011 to March 15, 2012, we will phone interview select

candidates. Candidates that move forward from this round will be invited for in-

person interviews between March 20th – April 6th, and final decisions will be

communicated on April 13, 2012.

What are the results?

STF is a unique experience that past fellows have described as invigorating,

challenging, and rewarding. Program alum have gone on to full-time teaching

positions at STF host schools, become leaders in the field of education reform, and

have seen their teaching, organizational, and leadership skills grow in

unanticipated ways.

My fellow superseded my expectations! Beyond looking for ways to

improve and becoming a better teacher, I expected for the fellow to be

passionate and open-minded. She was all of these things and more.”
