UNATC I.L.Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film UNATC is the only state-financed higher-education institution in Romania, activating in the fields of both Theatre and Film.

UNATC has judicial person status and functions under the Romanian Education Law.

The first theatre faculty in Romania begins its activity in 1834 within the Philharmonic School. A Faculty of Stage Direction opens in 1948 within the Romanian Art Institute – at that time (1948-1950), the center of all Romanian higher education in the arts.

1950 sees the founding of both the Institute for Film and the Institute for Theatre I. L. Caragiale (named after the classic Romanian playwright). In 1954, the two institutions merge into the Institute of Theatre and Film I.L. Caragiale (IATC). The Institute will function under this name until 1990, when it will become the Academy of Theatre and Film (ATF) – the only such school in Romania to enjoy a ranking equal to that of a university, as well as international recognition. Since 1990, the Academy of Theatre and Film has undergone a continuous reform process. New specializations have been added, such as Audiovisual Communication and Multimedia: Sound-Editing (both at the Film Faculty), Puppets-Marionettes, Choreography and Scenography (at the Theatre Faculty). The number of students has gone up, while the curricula and study programs have been continuously improved and diversified.

In 1998, the Academy of Theatre and Film became the University of Theatre and Film I.L. Caragiale (UATC). In 2001, it became the National University of Theatre and Film I.L. Caragiale (UNATC).

The UNATC DAY celebrates the birth of playwriter I.L. Caragiale, spiritual patron of the University and is held each year on the 30th of January. On this occasion, the latest creations of young artists - theater and film - are presented.

OPEN DOORS is an event for potential UNATC candidates: students and graduates of highschools and other universities. For three days, all those interested to study performing arts and film are invited to discover the creative and research laboratories of UNATC, to attend open courses, performances and screenings.

GRADUATES GALA brings together all theatrical productions created during the year (Bachelor and Master). Theatre Faculty graduates of all departments collaborate in the presented performances. At the end of the Gala, prizes for the best graduates are awarded.

The SUNDAY SCHOOL is an educational project, aimed at all age groups, regardless of education and training. The Sunday School offers a professional theoretical and practical training to anyone who wants to acquire the basic and advanced knowledge in the fields of photography, film and theatre acting, dramatic script, scenography etc.

The CONTEMPORARY TEXT LABORATORY is a platform for research, debate and theatrical performance, which aims at presenting edgy writings of contemporary authors. The laboratory was opened in April 2012 and presented Spanish and German playwrights.

SĂ FILM! (TO FILM!) is an event organized in partnership with the UNATC magazine Film Menu. Monthly, recently released Romanian film projections take place at the UNATC Cinema Hall, followed by discussions between the filmmakers and the audience.PR

We believe in cinema as an art that can synthesize our times better than any other. We believe in its power to transform communication as we know it. We believe in its power to revolutionize global culture and individual consciousness.

The Film Faculty’s defining concept is teamwork. A film is seen as the product of the union of creative energies emanating from all the Faculty’s departments. The UNATC Film Faculty is a member of CILECT and GEECT.

Almost all the major names of Romanian cinema have passed through this institution, which combines tradition with innovation, research with experiment.

Practice and Volunteering at the Film Faculty covers the non-theoretical as-pects of the jobs for which our students are preparing, providing them with the possibility of choosing from a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Students are free to choose each semester the particular activity which they find best suited to the development of their skills. The hours of practice are integrated in the students’ weekly schedule. Unlike the usual summer practice in the professional industry, this formula was consciously developed in order to familiarize students with the elements of discipline and routine inherent in any film-related work.

International partnerships The Film Faculty is a member of several international consortia reuniting major European film schools. These programs offer students the opportunity to participate in workshops and international congresses, under the guidance of prestigious tutors of theinternational film industry.

Admission examinations for the Film Faculty are held each year in August-September. The exams include eliminatory skills tests (which evaluate the candidate’s creativity and vocational skills in the relevant field), theoretical and practical evaluation tests.

BACHELOR’S DEGREEAdmission exams take place in the latter part of August and early September. For each specialization there is a repertoire of films or/and film authors that the candidate needs to have studied for the admission examination.The exams consist in two stages:The first stage, eliminatory – various practical tests challenge the candidate’s creativity, visual and associative memory, spirit of observation, general and specialized knowledge. The specific tests differ from one specialization to another.The second stage, marked on a scale from 1 to 10 – two or three different exams (depending on specialization) further challenge the candidate’s creativity and its adaptability to specific tasks. At the end of this stage, the candidates are ranked according to their scores.

Each year, the Film Faculty organizes preparatory classes (on Saturdays) for the admission exams.

MASTER’S DEGREEAdmission exams are held in mid-September and consist in two stages:Theoretical written test on the specialty, on a topic which is proposed by the admission commission.Practical / oral exam – either on subjects proposed by the admission commission, or on the basis of proposals submitted by the candidate at registration. The final mark consists of the average grade of the two exams, thus establishing the final ranking of the candidates.

The Film Directing Department trains professional makers of cinematic/audiovisual products. The curricula focus on interdisciplinary experiences, so this department communicates theoretically and practically with each of the other departments of the Film Faculty.

Over the three years of BA studies, students cover major cinematic and audiovisual genres: TV commercial, reportage, documentary and fiction film. Each exam is prepared by a series of class exercises.

Collaboration between student-directors and students from other departments of the Faculty is mandatory, leading to the formation of creative teams for each project.

During the MA, student training supports creative and professional expression in short and feature-length fiction directing.

The Department of Film Cinematography prepares professional cinematographers and cameramen. The students have access to both theoretical and practical training. Film and Television Cinematography BA graduates are specialists in the lighting and shooting of advertising and music videos, news reports, documentaries and fiction shorts on both film and digital supports. Over the three years of BA studies, students work on different media: digital, 16mm and super16mm black and white film, 35mm color and black and white film. After obtaining the bachelor’s degree, the graduate can enroll (after an exam) in the master’s degree program and thus continue his/her apprenticeship with work on fiction films shot both in the HD system, as well as on 35mm color film, an important step towards a professional career in filmmaking. Each exam is prepared through a series of class exercises.

The Film Editing Department prepares professional editors for the fields of cinema and other audiovisual media. Over three years, the department assures the necessary training for a high level of professional performance, certified by a BA degree. After that, the graduate is offered the possibility of applying for a two-year MA in order to further refine his/her editing skills for future work on fiction films. The curriculum in BA studies provides packages of fundamental disciplines for both the fields of film editing and film sound. It also provides two separate lines of optional disciplines, allowing students to gradually orient themselves, on the basis of personal predilection, towards either editing or sound design. During studies the focus is set on vocational interdisciplinary exercises in teams that simulate professional film production and stimulate the creativity of each crew member. For each project of this type, preparatory exercises are performed in class on structuring the footage during the editing stage. The concept underlying the BA in Multimedia: Sound and Editing highlights the interdependence between the basic elements common to two specific professions: editing and sound. The collaboration between students specializing in editing and students from other departments of the Faculty is mandatory, leading to the formation of creative teams for each project.

The 3 years of BA are designed so that students learn the history, specialties and features of the screenwriting profession. The curriculum provides the framework for students to develop skills of film analysis from a narratological perspective and to learn the basics of writing scripts in various formats (television formats, literary adaptation etc.).

During the 3 years, students are guided and counseled through the stages and methods of developing screenplays for both shorts and feature films. They are taught various techniques, narrative structures etc. At the end of their studies, they have to complete a screenplay for a fictional feature film.

The concept behind the BA in Audiovisual Communication: Screenwriting, Media Advertising, Film Studies highlights the interdependence between basic features of two specific professions: screenwriter and film theorist/journalist/scholar.

MA students in Screenwriting have two more years to further enrich and refine their script-development techniques, and also to master specific forms of presentation in international screenplay competitions.

The BA in Audiovisual Communication: Screenwriting, Media Advertising, Film Studies addresses those who already know that writing for or about films is their calling.

The 3 years of BA are designed so that students deepen their knowledge of the cinema from a historical, theoretical and critical perspective. The curriculum provides the students with a wide range of tools for rigorous reflection on the cinema (as an aesthetic and sociological phenomenon), and with a basic training in film journalism and academic-essay writing.

During the 3 years, students are guided and counseled in the writing of film criticism and the research of various areas of film history and film theory. At the end of their studies, graduates present a thesis paper.

The concept behind the BA in Audiovisual Communication: Screenwriting, Media Advertising, Film Studies highlights the interdependence between the basics features of two specific professions: screenwriter and film theorist/journalist/scholar.

The MA completes the student’s training as a film theorist, scholar, critic or journalist.

BA and MA students engage in research activities at Film Menu (a periodical financed by UNATC and expressly dedicated to their training), and also in the UNATC research centers, library and film archive.

MASTERFILM PRODUCTION

At the BA level, the film production department provides courses closely related to film production (production, set design, makeup, legislation etc.) for all other departments of the Faculty.

The Film Production MA has been recently accredited as an answer to the Romanian film industry’s acute need for trained producers. It is open to candidates from any area of specialization of the BA.

In the two years of study, production students fulfill various roles in film crews (production assistants, delegate producers, executive producers) to become familiar with the technique and technology of film, and its creative side.

Collaboration with other departments of the faculty is mandatory. The faculty encourages the formation of complete film crews from the earliest stages of script development. Teamwork is encouraged during all the subsequent stages.

During the MA, students must work as executive producers on at least one fiction film shot on HD (in the 1st year) and at least one fiction film shot in 35mm color (in the 2nd year).

There is also close collaboration with BA students in years 2 and 3 for their diploma films.

At the BA level, the department provides courses in multimedia techniques, animation techniques and directing techniques for animation films, for the specialization Multimedia: Sound and Editing.

The MA in Animation Film is a consequence of the recent development of this kind of film in Romania, in spite of the almost complete disappearance of professional animation studios,during the 90’s.

CLOSE UPCLOSE UP: FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES JOURNAL is a bi-annual English-language journal published by UNATC and it provides a platform for scholars and researchers with an interest in exploration of any aspect of cinema, film, television and new media. It aims to publish contributions interested in an in-depth analysis of the developments in this field and encourages fresh and interdisciplinary approaches, encompassing media theory, representation theory, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, culture studies, etc. The journal is expecting theoretical and scholar articles that analyze new forms of cinematic and media practice, and try to apply new tools of investigation and to enlarge the horizon of film and media studies.

CINEMAIUBITThe CineMAiubit Student Film Festival was founded in 1996 on the initiative of film director and professor Elisabeta Bostan, Dean of the Film Faculty at the time. After a few editions, the festival became international, continuously developing since then. Over 16 editions (and counting), CineMAiubit was the launching pad for many of today’s young Romanian filmmakers, a well-known event where the public can come into contact with student productions, and a much-needed test for the artistic training of future film professionals. Many of the names that have become emblems of the New Romanian Cinema (NCR) were among the prizewinners of CineMAiubit. Taking place traditionally in early December at downtown Bucharest’s Studio Cinema, CineMAiubit became a meeting place for tradition and experiment, energy and professionalism.

FILM MENU is a film journal initiated and supported by UNATC and run by its film students. It appears every two months, starting from June 2009. It aims to help train future film professionals in our country, and also to help foster a more vital film culture, a more dynamic cinephile environment. It is also involved in the development of film events, including the organization, within the UNATC premises, of weekly and bi-weekly Cineclub events (screeningsfollowed by debates), as well as the monthly series Să film! (To Film!) (screenings of very recent Romanian features followed by meetings with the filmmakers). The magazine is distributed for free at these events, and also during various film festivals from Bucharest and other Romanian cities, as well as in various Romanian bookshops. The Theatre Faculty’s mission is to prepare high-level professional artists in the field of theatre, capable of continuous improvement of their skills and aptitudes. The teaching process is centered on acquiring the main professional skills and abilities in order to ensure an immediate and seamless integration of the graduate student in a professional structure (theatre company) or to enable him/her to become initiators of artistic, managerial and pedagogical projects. The training programs reflect interest in both classical theatre values and the interdisciplinary concept that defines contemporary art. The creative lab has a central place in the Theatre Faculty providing the necessary framework for the formation of a free critical dynamic thinking. Students are encouraged to investigate as part of creative teams, to experience different working formulas, understand the theatre as a social phenomenon with a changing role in the contemporary world. An important factor in the training of the young artists is the direct contact with young audiences, which are seen as taking an active part in their formation.

As a leading exponent of the art theatre pedagogy in our country, UNATC developed new formative concepts highlighted by training cycles and by specific research. The UNATC Theatre faculty is a member of ELIA.

ADMISSIONThe admission exam is designed to meet the specificity of each specialization and to ensure a selection of candidates based on specific aptitudes, opportunities for future individual development and their previous training.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE

The exam is divided into two stages: an eliminatory round, usually dedicated to specific aptitudes and a competitive round, after which the final selection is made. For some specializations, workshops intended to better understand the candidates and reduce the stress factor before the last exam are scheduled between the two stages.

Each year, the Film Faculty organizes preparatory classes (on Saturdays) for the admission exams.

MASTER’S DEGREE

The Master Admission is open to anyone who has a Bachelor degree.

Admission to Master’s level focuses on the candidate’s ability to prove his/her specific training. Submission of an artistic and pedagogical resume is important for the examination commission to acquire an accurate image of the candidate and his/her capacity of professional improvement.

The examination process is designed to reveal the creative and innovative research resources specific to artistic personalities, who hold an original voice in the context of contemporary theatre.

The training is focused on acquiring methods and techniques that will prepare the actor to face the challenges of today’s society. According to the principle “acting is a specific way of thinking”, enunciated by Professor Ion Cojar acting method (the main method taught at the department), the Bachelor cycle focuses on developing the actor’s thinking, on deepening the perception and communication with fellow actors, on the development of physical and vocal expression techniques, and on the accumulation of specialized cultural information.

BACHELORAt the end of the first cycle, the graduate is able to create a role, to work as part of a team and on individual projects, to respond to the demands of a theatre director, to perform in theatre, film, radio and television productions.

MASTER IN ACTINGDuring the MA cycle, the student acquires the skill to engage in artistic research and the ability to approach a broad repertoire. Also, the student is developing a sense of artistic and social initiative through skills specific to theatre, cinema, radio, television and other media.

The studies of the Theatre Director Department (BA and MA) focus on the idea of laboratory – in the fields of theatre creativity and theatre research. The process of discovery and development of a creative director personality is based on self-knowledge acquired through the work of exploration, experiment and communication within a multidisciplinary artistic and technical team. Abilities, skills and experiences acquired during the three-year program give the graduates the opportunity to innovative art projects (theatre productions). The MA graduate in Theatre Directing is able to assume, as stage director, the design and implementation of a complex theatrical project by coordinating a creative team, under the technical and management specifications of the modern theatre companies. The high level of training enables the graduate to initiate, develop and complete research and artistic projects. The main objective of the MA studies in Playwriting is the formation of dramatic writing professionals active in the local theatre area, trained in a live research and experimentation environment. The MA focuses on the involvement of the playwright in all phases of the performance construction. The students learn the basic techniques of construction and handling of puppets as well as acting, body and voice techniques, which help them to understand the structure and internal articulations of a puppet theatre production.

They become familiar with the evolution of the contemporary puppet show, with the new technologies used in animation and with the ways in which digital art can be integrated into complex puppets productions.

Graduates of the Master in Animation Theatre have acquired the skills and abilities to fully create an animation performance, using digital techniques. Also the graduates learn to work as part of a team as part of projects that involve a digital or multimedia component.

The BA represents the theoretical component of the theatrical education. The main goal is to train professionals in Theatre Studies (theatre history, theory and aesthetics, theatre critique, cultural management) through a curriculum that combines theoretical study with practical subjects.

Through internships, in partnership with institutions and events, the learning process is always correlated with the labor market requirements.

The MA study program is aimed at training specialists capable to develop the theatre system professionally and creatively. The curriculum includes disciplines aimed to acquire both theoretical and practical skills.

The MA graduates work in research and education, theaters, radio and television, publications, publishing, production companies, advertising, independent/private, governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The Choreography Department aims to give students a theoretical and practical base in the field of choreographic art, to provide an applied working context and extensive concepts on the dramatic aspect of choreographic creation, on composition methods and structure of a dance piece.

Students become familiar with the most relevant research methods of choreographers and dancers representing landmarks in the history of Romanian and international choreography.

Thorough knowledge of the diversity of creative techniques allows choreographic master graduate to approach representative aesthetic directions in choreography and to open new ones aimed to define his/her personality.

The first three years of study are dedicated to acquiring of the general notions specific to the domain. Students are introduced to the creative process, have the ability to present at a stage design project level their own artistic concepts through models, sketches of atmosphere and light, decor, costume sketches. Students collaborate with colleagues from other departments to develop artistic projects.

After the two years of Master, the graduates are able to draft plans, elevations, developments, perspectives, details in a common presentation - working folder.

The MA students are guided and encouraged to tackle the classical repertoire, to express their artistic concept accurately and professionally developing their creative potential. They are also participating in the production of props and costumes.

The Master of Design, Light and Sound provides students with all the conditions of experiential type training, within a teaching program based on learning by doing. At the end of the master specialization, each student has al-ready acquired a solid artistic portfolio.

THE ACTOR’S MEANS OF EXPRESSION DEPARTMENT provides courses at both the cycle of studies, as a support course for other specializations.

The first three years of study objectives are engaging, educating and improving complex means of communication, by acquiring vocal and body performative techniques.

Speech cumulates voice study and sounds, deepening individual expressiveness and voice freedom, coordinated with body expression, with the mind and emotions.

The objectives of the Speech and Stage Movement courses at MA level are acquiring specific elements of style, preparation of own portfolio of techniques applied to a diverse repertoire.

THEATRE FACULTY FACILITIESInside UNATC premises the Theatre Faculty has three theatre studios (spaces fully equipped for theatre productions) for the graduation productions (BA and MA):

UNATC Club and the RED BARRACK can be used for theatre productions and events.

UNATC has two more halls in the Children’s Palace in Bucharest: ION COJAR HALL OCTAVIAN COTESCU STUDIO.

The Preparation for artistic creation exams takes place in workshop facilities which are adequately equipped for each specialization: acting, directing, choreography, puppetry, scenography, light and sound design. Thus students can acquire the specific knowledge about the use of common light, sound, multimedia equipment in current productions.

Theoretical specializations have allocated their own facilities for practice.

UNATC LIBRARY includes books and valuable collections on theatre and theory of theatre, very rare in other Romanian libraries.

A growing digital database contains recordings of seminal Romanian and international theatre productions.

FESTIVALUL NAȚIONAL DE TEATRU ACTUL I, SCENA I covers the most representative performances of theatre schools in Romania. The festival is not focused on competition, but offers a space for artistic reflection and a meeting place for professors and students with theatrical background, thus building a cultural context that encourages the exchange of ideas and practices. The festival is held annually in late June in partenership with other Romanian Theatre Schools.

Romanian Performing Arts Journal RPAJ is published by UNATC and it is an interdisciplinary and intercultural academic journal that covers all aspects of performing arts from theatre, dance, music, and opera to video, performance, ritual, etc. RPAJ publishes theoretical articles that favor interdisciplinary approaches, reports on seminal events, accounts of particular performances, book reviews, manifestos RPAJ emphasize an inter-relational approach between different fields of research: theatre studies, performing arts studies, sociology, culture studies, religion, philosophy and science, giving an in-depth panorama of contemporary performance trends in writing and practice.

Concept scientific journal is representative for the Performing Arts (Theatre, Choreography, Film, Media and Music) and is published by the Research Department of the National University of Theatre and Film I.L. Caragiale Bucharest being lead by a young team of professors, researchers, both practicians and theoreticians under the guidance of professors from Romania and abroad. During its 2 years of issue (since 2010 until now) the Editorial Board maintained permanent sections of the magazine, adding new ones at each new publication. The summary of Concept is eloquent for all Theatre and Film Faculty activities of interest: Research, Interview, Book Reviews, Performance, Remember.

LIFE LONG LEARNING PROGRAMME ERASMUS Since 2011, UNATC is actively involved in the Life Long Learning Programme Erasmus. In our first year on the programme, the Erasmus University Charter gave our students the opportunity to go on placements, to undertake internships at universities, theaters, film or photo studios abroad.
