Goal: Create an interdisciplinary list of core journals to inform a content development strategy.
Process: Gathered journal indexes from multiple sources and reviews; cleaning up data and removing duplicates
Final Product: Massive excel sheet that consolidates data from multiple sources and allows user to filter information by discipline, index, factor, publisher, and other important subjects.
Most Valuable Part: Conversations with my mentors about the larger issues with collection development and taxonomy. Andrea Neuhoff

Gravity Wall Case Study Spring Break – Chicago - 2012
• Utilized research methodologies including field
observation, heuristic evaluation, survey administration,
and usability testing.
• Challenged to think about heuristics for a gesture-
controlled interface.
• Gained real-world experience employing methods
learned in SI classes.
• Based on evaluation findings, Adler changed the Gravity
Wall display to improve visitor experience.
I spent my week at the Adler Planetarium evaluating
their Gravity Wall display, which incorporates
embodied interaction via an Xbox Kinect to allow
visitors to explore how gravitational pull impacts the
movement of cosmic structures.
Andrew Katz at the Media Burn Video Archive
• Watched lots of documentaries about Chicago.
• Wrote lesson plans so teachers could use the videos in class.
• Put the plans up the MBVA’s new Website.
During ASB I had the great opportunity to work with Bob Kosovsky of the Music Division of the New York Public Library.
We digitalized programs, networked with people within the field, got insider knowledge and tips on how to conduct interviews and network.
And the best part? The people I connected with and the friendships I made. - Angeline “Angie” Chang (ASB 2012)

I worked at the Detroit Historical Society in Historic Fort Wayne. I spent my week digitizing and creating records for their postcard collection. I learned a lot about digitizing records and about describing items and the language that needs to be used in these descriptions.
During my time at the Space Visualization Laboratory, we conducted a study of how users interact with The Milky Way Project’s interface on a touchscreen and desktop. We also developed a prototype augmented reality app using Layar that overlays information about stellar objects on the Milky Way Galaxy Wall located in the museum.

ASB at the Poets House Esti Brennan, MLIS '13
During my ASB experience, I created a finding aid for the Poets House Oral Histories project. I got to learn all about the fascinating history of the organization while working with the fantastic staff and stuffing my head with poetry. For someone with my background in literature and future in libraries, it was more or less the perfect week.

• OTI is a member of the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition (DDJC), an alliance of organizations that received Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) grants in 2010 to run Sustainable Broadband Adoption (SBA) and Public Computer Center (PCC) programs in Detroit in partnership with Michigan State University.
• Detroit Future includes three program areas: 1) Detroit Future Media, a multi-week training program covering a range of digital media skills and concentrations in education, entrepreneurship and media-based organizing; 2) Detroit Future Schools, which partners graduates from Detroit Future Media with K-12 teachers to design and implement digital media arts-integrated curriculum; and 3) Detroit Future Youth, a network of youth-led organizations using media and the Internet for organizing and creative problem solving.
• I spent the week analyzing, cleaning, and presenting the data of various Twitter datastores that contain information on #detroitfuture. I set up a robust database parsing system to feed the Tweets to an onsite server. This will help future analysis of this information via Network Theory and Sentiment analysis.

field to explore local establishments in outer Chicago neighborhoods, and promote them through FourSquare and ExploreChicago.org.
In one week, we explored the Andersonville, West Loop, Hyde Park, Old Town, and Lincoln Park neighborhoods. We talked to locals,
listened to their rich stories, and discovered amazing things that make their establishments worthwhile. We crafted these findings into “call-
to-action” tips, which are now available to 70,000+ ExploreChicago FourSquare followers and millions of Chicago visitors.

I spent the week scanning correspondence from the 1850's-1870's about book requests, scientific conferences, and checks as well as photographs of an Alaskan expedition. I also created item-level metadata for the digitized correspondence, field books, and bird-watching journals. The images were saved as TIFF files at a minimum of 600 dpi. The metadata gathered included author, date, title, description, comments, etc.

GREEN MAP SYSTEM is in the process of transferring their digital archive to the New York Public Library and needed the map's inventory list to be checked, completed and possibly translated by map makers from around the world. Our group created a Google site that served as a vehicle for informing map makers of the archive’s progress and goals. Care was taken to make the site translation friendly and a form was included to allow for the submission of new materials. We expanded and clarified the inventory list and provided safeguards to limit (and recuperate from) accidental editing.

Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS)
Sarah Sherman ASB Detroit 2012
At COTS, I worked wi th Development staff to establish a workflow for online inquiries from community members, including volunteers, potential donors, and COTS clients.
Located in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, COTS provides emergency, transitional, and long-term shelter to needy men, women and children. COTS staff also provide valuable support services that help their clients find stable housing.
Sarah Wingo: Shakespeare Collection Book Trade and Illustrator Added Entries
Worked in cataloging creating trace records for the post 1700 Shakespeare book collection.
My work will help to increase access to materials within the Folger’s collection by allowing for more precise searches to be carried out by users.
For a detailed account of my project please see the blog I kept during ASB https://sites.google.com/site/wingoasb/journal-blog

Before ASBI didn’t have any experience with cataloging, and now I have worked on a cataloging project within a professional and highly respected institution. ASB is important because it gives students the chance to learn new skills, make professional connections and try their hand at different aspects of the professional world.

My name is Stacy Maat and I spent my time during ASB at the Folger Shakespeare Library. My project was to create BookReader views for a few of the digitized books the Folger wanted to link to their catalog Hamnet. I was able to do my dream career and work on creating a digital library for the Folger. When I first arrived, their online digitized book collection only had 8 items, by the time I left, I have more than doubled their collection; increasing it to 20 books. I loved my time at the Folger and am grateful for the opportunity.

Law Library Reference Internship
• Student Name: Xin (Sherry) Chen • Major: MSI with Specialization in LIS • Project City: Washington D.C. • Organization Name: Georgetown University Law Library
• My Experience: During the 2012 ASB, I participated in
the Georgetown Law Library Reference Internship in Washington D.C. I really enjoyed my experience at Georgetown.
Thanks to Georgetown's superb organization, every day of my internship was spent meaningfully and productively. I had the opportunity to meet with many interesting persons during the internship, to be involved in various activities at the Law Library (special collections, circulation desk, reference work, round table discussions, etc.), and to work on an interesting project to improve my skills. Everyone we met at Georgetown is super nice, warm and friendly. Our project organizer and mentor sat down with us multiple times to ask about our feedback of the internship program, to discuss the future trends in law librarianship, and to offer advice on professional skills and future career development. After 5 days at Georgetown, I am very impressed by the organization and hospitality at Georgetown. Also, after working with the reference librarians for 5 days, I am very impressed by their integration of the newest technology into their innovative services, and by their team efforts in providing the best user experience for their patrons.
