    Part A

Q: 1).Differentiate between Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency.

    Answer:

Data Interpretation (DI) sometimes also called "Data Analysis" can be definedas the application of statistical procedures to analyze specific observed orassumed facts from particular study. Data interpretation as the name suggeststests the skills of understanding data presented in different forms like bargraphs, tables, charts and bar graphs.

Researchers interpret data using statistical formulas; for example, they may

calculate the average height of a group of study subjects, or the probability thatthe height of a random study subject is less than 5 feet.

The result of data interpretation may be as simple as a number, as in, the

average height of the subjects is 5 feet 6 inches. It may be presenting two ormore types of data in a chart or graph for easier comparison. It may be writinga report, making a presentation or formulating a theory.

Two people looking at the same set of complex data may interpret it in differentways, performing different statistical analyses or drawing opposite conclusions.Data interpretation often raises additional or new questions for study.

Data Sufficiency is about working out what is necessary and sufficient data toanswer a question which is very different from the usual problem solvingquestions that are faced.

Each data sufficiency question consists of 3 parts namely:

    The question,

    Statement 1, and

    Statement 2.

To determine the solution, one needs to give the combination of the twostatements that is necessary and sufficient to arrive at the answer to thequestion.

Thus, Data interpretation tests or requires one to be adept in determining themeaning data whereas data sufficiency questions requires you to determine

statements or conditions that are not only necessary but also are required orsufficient to come with a solution to the problem or question.

Q: 2).Explain the process of construction of Pie Chart.

    Answer:

A Pie Chart is a type of a circle graph normally used to showcase a wholesomequantity, it shows how this whole quantity is broken down into parts. Thewhole quantity depicts entire sample space and the pieces of pie in the circlegraph are called Sectors.

To construct a pie chart, all data values need to be added to come up with thetotal of the samples/population under study.

Each data value is then expressed as a fraction or percentage of the total found

    above.

The next step is to determine the angle sector each data value will take in thepie chart. This is accomplished by multiplying the fraction or percentage foundby 3600. The angle that will be found for each data value represents the angle itshould take in the pie chart.

If calculations are done correctly, the sum of fractions for all data values out ofthe total should be unity (one) or if percentages are used the percentagesshould add up to 100. The angles for the sectors found should also add up to3600.

To draw the pie chart, one requires to have a pair of compasses and protractor.

Using the pair of compasses, a practically suitable circle is drawn. Since anglesat the centre of a circle add up to 3600, and our angle sectors added up to3600, the angle at the centre is divided according to the sector angles.

The pie chart is then labeled accordingly for ease of interpretation. This mainlyinvolved coming up with a key and adding a title to the pie chart. This may also

involve other labels of one's choice which may include colours, labeling in thesectors if practically possible, etc.

    Q: 4).Define average angular acceleration.

    Answer:

Angular acceleration is the rate of change of angular velocity with respect totime. Suppose the body has moved some distance then if we consider initialand final point where the displacement gets an end, then its average angularacceleration is given by Average angular acceleration.

The average angular acceleration of an object is defined as the ratio of the

change in angular velocity to the time taken by the body to undergo thischange. i.e

    Part B

Q: 1). The average weekly salary per head of the entire staff of a factoryconsisting of supervisors and the laborers is Rs 60. The average salary perhead of the supervisors is Rs 400 and that of the laborers is Rs 56. Given

that the number of supervisors is 12. Find the number of laborers in thefactory.

    Answer:

    Given:

Average salary of laborer Rs 56

Average salary of supervisors Rs 400

Average salary of entire staff Rs 60

    340 4

Number of laborer / Number of Supervisors

    = 340/4

    = 85/1

Thus, if the number of supervisors is 1, number of laborers = 85.

Therefore if the number of supervisors is 12 number of laborers

    85 * 12 = 1020

Q: 2).What is the value of X, if X and Y are two distinct integers and theirproduct is 30?

    1) X is an odd integer2) X > Y

    Answer:

This is a data sufficiency problem.

The data sufficiency problem consists of a question and two statements, labeled (1) and (2), in which certain data are given. So anyone solving thesetype of problems have to decide whether the data given in the statements aresufficient for answering the question. The answer must indicate whether:

    1) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is notsufficient to answer the question asked.

    2) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is notsufficient to answer the question asked.

    3) BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the

question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient to answerthe question asked.

    4) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.5) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the

question asked, and additional data specific to the problem are needed.

From the question, we know that both X and Y are distinct integers and theirproduct is 30.

30 can be obtained as a product of two distinct integers in the followingmanner:

    1 * 30 (-1) * (-30)

    2 * 15 (-2) * (-15)

    3 * 10 (-3) * (-10)

    5 * 6 (-5) * (-6)

    Statement 1:

From this statement, we know that the value of X is odd.

Therefore, X can be one of the following values: 1, -1, 3, -3, 5, -5. So, using the

information in statement 1 we will not be able to conclusively decide the valueof X. Hence, statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

    Statement 2:

From this statement, we know that the value of X > Y.

From the given combinations, X can take more than one value. Hence, usingthe information in statement 2, we will not be able to find the value of X.

    Combining the two statements,

We know that X is odd and that the value of X > Y.

Values of X and Y that satisfy both the conditions include X taking the value of-1, -3 and -5.

    (2) x < 1

    Answer:

Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is notsufficient to answer the question.

    Explanation:

The given question is an "Is" question. So, the answer has to be a definite YES

or a definite NO. It cannot be a MAYBE.

    Statement (1):x > 0

    We know that x is a positive number. If 0 < x < 1, then x 3 < x2.For example, (0.5)3 = 0.125, which is lesser than (0.5)2 = 0.25

    However, if x > 1, then x3 > x2

    For example, 23 = 8 which is greater than 22 = 4

    NOT Sufficient.

    Statement (2):x < 1

    For positive values of x, i.e., 0 < x < 1, we know x3 < x2.

For negative values of x, x3 will be a negative number and x2 will be a positivenumber.

EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.

    Explanation

The given question is an "Is" question. So, the answer has to be a definite YESor a definite NO. It cannot be a MAYBE.

We have to find out if X is divisible by 21.

Any positive integer is divisible by 21 if it is simultaneously divisible by 3 and7.

Statement (1): When X is divided by 14, the remainder is 4

The number is therefore of the form 14k + 4. It will leave a remainder of 4 whendivided by 7.

This number is definitely not divisible by 7.

    Explanation:

Statement 1: The elements are in arithmetic progression.

So, x could either be 3 or 27.

    INSUFFICIENT.

    Statement 2: x is prime

x could be any prime number.

    INSUFFICIENT

Combining the two statements, we know that x could take only two values from

statement 1. viz., 3 or 27; from statement 2 we know that x is prime. 3 is the

only value that satisfies both the conditions.

Q: 26). Data Sufficiency : Is the positive integer X divisible by 21?

    (1) When X is divided by 14, the remainder is 4

    (2) When X is divided by 15, the remainder is 5

    Answer:

EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.

    Explanation

The given question is an "Is" question. So, the answer has to be a definite YESor a definite NO. It cannot be a MAYBE.

We have to find out if X is divisible by 21.

Any positive integer is divisible by 21 if it is simultaneously divisible by 3 and7.

Statement (1): When X is divided by 14, the remainder is 4

The number is therefore of the form 14k + 4. It will leave a remainder of 4 when

    divided by 7.

This number is definitely not divisible by 7.

Hence, X is not divisible by 21.

    SUFFICIENT.

Statement (2): When X is divided by 15, the remainder is 5

The number X is of the form 15m + 5

The number will therefore, leave a remainder of 2 when divided by 3.

Hence, it definitely not divisible by 3.

Hence, X is not divisible by 21.

    SUFFICIENT.

EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.

    Q: 27). If m, s are the average and standard deviation of integers a, b,c, and d, is s > 0?

    (1) m > a

    (2) a + b + c + d = 0

    Answer:

Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is notsufficient to answer the question.

    Explanation

S will be zero only in two instances:

    (i) when all the elements in the set are the same, or

(ii) the set contains only one element, which in this case is not possible.

So, we need to check whether a, b, c, and d are the same integers.

    Statement (1): m > a

    The average will be equal to a, b, c, and d only when a = b = c = d. Since m > a,all the elements in the set cannot be the same, and therefore, s > 0.

    SUFFICIENT

    Statement (2): a + b + c + d = 0

    When a = b = c = d = 0, s = 0

    When a = -4, b = 0, c = 0, and d = 4, s > 0

    NOT sufficient

Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is notsufficient to answer the question.
