that spring, strung together a school-record six-game postseason winning streak before it fell to Miami Uni-versity 2-1 in the NCAA West Regional final. Nine years ago, Sandelin, 48, turned UMD into a NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly a gen-eration, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were 28-13-4 overall) and highest WCHA finish (second place on a 19-7-2 mark) since 1992-93. For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., native was chosen the WCHA Coach of the Year as well as the national coach of the year by both insidecollegehockey.com and uscho.com. In 2002-03, Sandelin’s charges went 22-15-5 overall and captured fifth place in the WCHA with a 14-10-4 mark while experiencing the great-est one-season turnaround of any league club that winter. One year earlier, he guided UMD to a 13-24-1 record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of victories from the previous season (7-28-4). Sandelin officially signed on as a member of the Bulldog staff on March 31, 2000 following six years of assistant coaching deployment at North Dakota. Prior to joining the Fighting Sioux (who won two NCAA titles during his tenure), Sandelin spent the 1993-94 season as the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the previous winter with the American Hockey Association’s Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year playing career at North Dakota in 1985-86 by be-ing named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. An All-WCHA first team pick and an All-American second team selection as a senior, Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional hockey, which included National Hockey League stints with the Montreal Canadiens (1986-88), Philadelphia Flyers (1990-91) and Minnesota North Stars (1991-92). Sandelin, one of just two current WCHA coaches to do time in the NHL, was the Montreal Canadiens’ second-round pick in the 1982 NHL draft (40th choice overall). He served as Team USA’s head coach at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, directing that club to a fourth-place finish, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. at that same event last winter.

Mel Pearson (Michigan Tech, 1982) took over as the head coach at his alma mater in May 2011 after spending the previous 23 seasons in an assistant coaching role with the University of Michigan. His 2011-12 Huskies turned in a 16-19-4 overall record (after going 4-30-4 one year earlier) and made a WCHA Final Five tournament appearance, which earning Pearson the WCHA Coach of the Year awardThe former Edina (Minn.) High School star played four years with the Huskies under legendary head coach John MacInnes and accumulated 56 points in 97 career games from 1977-81. Pearson, who is 1-2- lifetime versus UMD, went on to serve as a Michigan Tech assistant for six seasons before signing on with Michigan.

THE RIVALRY: This weekend’s series will mark the 221st and 222nd meetings ever between UMD and Michigan Tech. The Huskies hold a 119-82-19 lead in the all-time series, which began on Dec. 31, 1952 at the old Duluth Curling Club. One year ago (Dec. 2-3), UMD swept then 20th-ranked Michigan Tech by a pair of identical 5-3 scores in Houghton, Mich., but the Huskies bounced back on Jan. 27-28 to take three of four points from the host Bulldogs (a 4-4 tie and 5-0 victory).

LAST WEEKEND: The Bulldogs traded WCHA wins with St. Cloud State University at AMSOIL Arena, prevailing 2-1 on Friday for their first WCHA triumph of the 2012-13 season, before dropping a 5-1 decision the following evening. Rookie center Tony Cameranesi scored once and assisted on senior defenseman Wade Bergman’s game-winning goal in the series opener while senior right winger Mike Seidel accounted for the lone tally on Saturday for the Bulldogs, who outshot the Huskies 33-22.

Michigan Tech has been idle since sweeping WCHA rival Bemidji State University (5-4 in overtime and 2-1) on Nov. 9-10 in Bemidji, Minn.

WCHA FORECAST: In their annual preseason poll, the WCHA head coaches collectively forecasted a sixth-place league finish for UMD in 2012-13. The University of Minnesota (11 first-place votes and 121 points) was tabbed as the team to beat followed by North Dakota (one first-place vote and 110 pts.), the Uni-versity of Denver (91 pts.), St. Cloud State (90 pts.) and Wisconsin (70 pts.). Michigan Tech, meanwhile, was slotted ninth among the 12 schools. UMD, which

garnered 69 points, checked in at No. 5 for the second year in a row in the 94X WCHA Media Poll.

AYE, AYE CAPTAIN: Left winger Cody Danberg is being entrusted with the team captaincy duties for the 69th edition of UMD hockey while a pair of fellow seniors -- right winger Keegan Flaherty and defenseman Drew Olson -- are serving as assistant team captains.

YOU AGAIN?: UMD has butted heads with both Michigan Tech and North Dakota on more occasions (220) than any other opponent in its 69-history. (Minnesota is next on that list at 218 times). The Bulldogs have also met the Huskies and Minnesota on an annual basis since the 1961-62 season, making each UMD’s longest continual rivalry.

TAKING THE BARK OUT THE HUSKIES: The Bulldogs are unbeaten in eight of their last nine meetings with the Huskies, going 7-1-1 since dropping a 3-1 deci-sion on Feb. 5, 2010 in Houghton. They had reeled off seven straight wins at Michigan Tech’s expense before battling to a 4-4 tie last Jan. 27 at AMSOIL Arena. That seven-game winning streak was the UMD’s

second longest ever against any WCHA club, bettered only by the 12 consecutive triumphs it posted over Wisconsin during the mid-1980s. What’s more, UMD has been derailed by Michigan Tech only three times in the two club’s last 17 confrontations (11-3-3). TAKING THE BARK OUT THE HUSKIES II : In addition, UMD has won five consecutive games at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena (going back to that 3-1 setback on Feb. 5, 2010) and two years ago posted back-to-back shutouts (5-0 and 3-0 on Jan. 21-22, 2011) over the Huskies. That marked the first -- and only -- time a UMD club had ever swept a series without allowing a goal.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS: UMD, along with current WCHA colleagues Colorado College, Denver, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota and St. Cloud State will hook up with the new eight-team National Collegiate Hockey Conference next fall. The Bulldogs have been members of the WCHA since the 1965-66 season.

STILL THE TOP ‘DOG: Senior right winger Mike Seidel, who has picked up at least one point in 11 of UMD’s 12 games to date (he was blanked in UMD’s 2-0 loss to Wisconsin on Oct. 26), continues to pace the Bulldogs in scoring with eight goals and six assists. Those eight goals are bettered by only five other NCAA II combatants at the moment and are tops in the WCHA. Seidel, the nation’s leader in power play goals with five, will carry a career-high seven-game scoring streak into this Friday night’s bout at Michigan Tech. His previous best was a six-game run between Nov. 18 and Dec. 10, 2011.

THE SHORT END OF THE STICK: Since the 2011 East Regional final against Yale University, UMD has gener-ated just one shorthanded goal and that came off the stick of senior right winger Keegan Flaherty at Michi-gan Tech University on Dec. 2, 2011 -- the eventual game-winner in a 5-3 triumph. Over that same period of time, the Bulldogs have ceded only three shorties themselves with two of those coming last season (by Michigan Tech on Jan. 27, 2012 and the University of Notre Dame on Oct. 8, 2011) and the other occur-ring this past Saturday night against St. Cloud State.

ROOKIES ON THE RISE: Center Tony Cameranesi, who had his six-game scoring streak snapped in Saturday’s 5-1 loss to St. Cloud State, currently is tied for third in points among all NCAA rookies with 12 (five goals and seven assists) while left winger Austin Farley is tied for eighth (10 points). UMD currently sports the fifth highest-scoring freshmen class in the country (it shares that honor with St. Cloud State), as that ensemble of collegiate novices has combined for 11 goals and 19 assists.

SECOND NIGHT BLUES: UMD has yet to win the rematch game of series this season, going 0-5-1.

SIX OF ONE, HALF DOZEN OF THE OTHER: Junior Aaron Crandall (2-3-1) and freshman Matt McNeely (1-4-1) have each made six starts in goal for the Bulldogs thus far. In three lifetime appearances versus Michigan Tech, Crandall is 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals against aver-age and a .918 saves percentage. He also registered one of his two career shutouts against the Huskies – a 3-0 gem on Jan. 22, 2011 in Houghton.

BOMBS AWAY: The Bulldogs, who have outshot the opposition in all but two of their 12 outings to date, are averaging 32.6 shots on goal per night, the 12th highest figure in the country.

DON’T DO THE CRIME IF YOU CAN’T DO THE TIME: With an average of 18.7 minutes of infraction time per night, the Bulldogs are the nation’s most penalized team. Their opponents, haven’t fared much better in this department, accruing 89 penalties (the same number as UMD) for a 18.2 minutes per game average.

CONSISTENTLY CONSISTENT: Since Feb. 26, 2010, the Bulldogs have lost two or more games in a row only three times and the longest losing streak they’ve had to endure during that stretch is three games (Oct. 8-16, 2011).

BULLDOG BITS: Scott Sandelin’s first coaching win with the Bulldogs came against Michigan Tech -- a 5-3 home decision on Nov. 11, 2000 ... UMD is unbeaten in 37 of its last 42 overtime games (15-5-22; 0-1-2 this winter) stretching back to the start of the 2008-09 season. Among active Bulldogs, only two have an overtime goal to their collegiate credit -- seniors Cody Danberg (Jan. 11, 2008 vs. Minnesota State-Mankato) and Mike Seidel (March 10, 2012 in UMD’s 3-2 double-overtime victory over visiting Minnesota State-Mankato in the WCHA playoffs) ... Senior right winger Keegan Flaherty has now skated in 93 consecutive games, the longest ironman streak among active Bulldogs while two other seniors -- defenseman Wade Bergman and Jake Hendrickson -- have both made 77 successive appearances (going back to Dec. 30, 2010) ... The Bulldogs, who have collected at least one goal with the man advantage in 10 of 12 games this season -- including the last six in a row, rank second in the WCHA in power play efficiency at 23.7 percent ... Left winger/center Caleb Hebert hasn’t produced a point in the last nine out-ings, the longest scoring drought (by seven games) of his collegiate career. One year ago, he finished with highest point harvest (33) of any UMD freshman en route to being named the team’s Rookie of the Year ... Since suffering a 3-2 setback to Bemidji State in the opening round of the 2011 WCHA Final Five, the Bulldogs are 20-1-3 when taking a lead into the third period. On the flip side, UMD is a mere 1-20-2 (0-9-1 in 2011-12 and 0-4-0 this season) when trailing at the second intermission over the past three seasons. The last time UMD overcame a second-intermission deficit to win was on Nov. 10, 2010 when it erased a 2-1 Michigan Tech advantage by scoring four times in the final 20 minutes of regulation on its way to a 5-3 home triumph ... Senior team captain Cody Danberg, who because of injuries had taken part in only one game over the previous two seasons (the 2011-12 opener with Notre Dame at AMSOIL Arena), is the first

FEELING A BIT OF A DRAFTSeven members of the 2012-13 Bulldogs have been drafted by National Hockey League clubs including:

Class Year Round TeamJoe Basaraba 2010 3rd FloridaTony Cameranesi 2011 5th TorontoDan DeLisle 2009 3rd ChicagoCaleb Herbert 2010 5th WashingtonDrew Olson 2008 4th ColumbusMax Tardy 2009 7th St. LouisAndy Welinski 2011 3rd Anaheim

Worth Noting Nine former Bulldogs skated in the NHL last winter, two shy of the program high set during the 1994-95 season.

sixth-year senior to ever play at UMD ... The Bulldogs haven’t been shut out in a regular season road out-ing in nearly six years (2-0 vs. Bemidji State on Jan. 5, 2007), but they’ve come up empty on six regular season occasions in Duluth over that same stretch ... Up until two weeks ago, UMD had cracked the Top 20 in every USCHO.com poll since Nov. 2, 2009 ... UMD has been outscored 10-5 in the third period thus far in 2012-13 ... With a .333 winning percentage off a 3-7-2 overall record, UMD is off to its slowest start since the 2005-06 season when it owned that same mark after the opening 12 engagements of the year.

ON TAP: The Bulldogs will return home for the final time in 2012 to host WCHA adversary Bemidji State on Dec. 7-8.
