Troy

• Troy is the site of the 10 year Trojan War. Ulysses was here fighting to free Helen from Paris. He developed the plan for the Trojan Horse which led to the Greek victory over the Trojans.

Troy- Ilium (Turkey)Archaeological Sight of Troy

• It is the most famous archaeological site in the world. Immortalized by Homer in the Iliad, Troy has inspired great creative artists throughout the world ever since.• The real cause of the Trojan War

was intense rivalry between Troy and the Mycenaean kingdom, the prize being control of the Dardanelles and the money-making trade with the Black Sea.

Troy- Ilium (Turkey)• The evidence of widespread fire and

slaughter around 1250 BC, which brought Troy VIIA to an end, has led to this phase being identified with the city destroyed by the Greeks during the Trojan War, immortalized in The Iliad. Troy is the supposed burial places of these heroes, such as Achilles, Ajax, Hector, and Patroclus.• Troy II and Troy VI in particular are

characteristic examples of the ancient city, with a majestic fortified base enclosing palaces and administrative buildings, surrounded by an extensive lower town, also fortified.

Ciconia- Ismarus (Bulgaria)

• Ciconia is the first place that Ulysses and his men stopped to gather supplies and water after leaving Troy. Ulysses decided to be a bully, so he invaded the island. The people looked so innocent, in their white tunics and the peaceful landscape. Ulysses thought that the people were defenseless, not knowing that they would fight back. Ulysses and his men had to leave Ciconia quickly. Ulysses and his men stayed here for 3 days.• WARNING: DO NOT STEAL FROM THE

CICONIANS. THERE FORCES WOULD DEFEAT YOU.

Ciconia- Thrace (Bulgaria)

• Walk on the island of Thrace, the modern day Ciconia. You can see ruins from when Ulysses and his crew invaded the Ciconian’s island and stole what they pleased.• His men fled to the ships after the

Ciconians got revenge and attacked back at Ulysses.• You should not steal what

belongs to others.

Lotus Land- Western Coast of Africa(Then)

• The people who live on that island gave Ulysses men lotus flowers. These flowers put them into a deep sleep in which they forget their families and why they wanted to leave. All they wanted to do is eat the plant. Ulysses had to drag them back to the ship and make sure that they could continue their journey back home to Ithaca. Ulysses and his crew stayed there 3 days.• WARNING:DO NOT EAT THE FLOWERS,

UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE IN AN ETERNAL SLUMBER.

Lotus Land- Western Coast of Africa(Now)

• There are sixteen countries that are considered to be the Western Africa. West Africa is one of the most diverse and fascinating regions. It is home to thousands of native languages.

Cyclops Island- Sicily (Then)• Ulysses and his men turned into hungry savages.

They had no food and drink supply, and they came upon this great island. Ulysses took a dozen of his men to venture. Suddenly, a great smell of goat lured them into a cave with a giant Cyclops. Ulysses greeted the Cyclops and gave him pure wine to drunken him. Ulysses then made a plan to stab the eye of the giant and get out of the cave before he can eat his men. Polyphemus was blinded, then stomped on one of the men and ripped one of them apart. Ulysses retreated to his destroyed ship and shows hubris and he paid for what he did. Ulysses learned not to show hubris and feel that he is more powerful than others. Ulysses stayed at the island for less than a day, not exactly successful finding food.

Cyclops Cave- Sicily (Now)

The Cyclops’ Cave is in present day Sicily. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It provides attractions that show the art, music, history and cuisine of Sicily. Sicily also features the tallest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna. Sicily has boasting mild temperatures and wet winters and dry summers.

Keeper of the Winds- On Tyrrhenian Sea(Then)

Ulysses and his men saw a giant floating island blocked by a shiny bronze gate. They met Aeolus, an enormously fat demigod with a long beard who loved to eat and hear stories. Ulysses told Aeolus that they needed a way to get back home to Ithaca. Aeolus was generous and kind enough to give Ulysses the four winds so Ulysses can use the bag to get home. Ulysses told his men not to open the bag. Ulysses fell asleep and his men selfishly opened the bag and the four winds escaped causing them to drift farther away from home. Ulysses should have trusted his men enough to explain what was in the bag and why they shouldn’t open it. They stayed at this island for less than a day.WARNING:REMEMBER TO USE YOUR CHANCES WISELY. AT THE TIME YOU DESPERATELY NEED THEM, THEY WONT BE THERE.

• The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea, located off of the western coast of Italy. It's around Corsica and Sardinia, in the north by the Isle of Elba, and in the south by Sicily. In addition to Corsica, Elba, Sardinia and Sicily, it contains many popular small islands, including Capri, Elba and Ustica, and the active volcano of Stomboli. Cagliari, Civitavecchia, Naples and Palermo are its chief ports.

Cannibal Beach- Paximadia(Then)• Ulysses and his men had found another

island for the third time not knowing if it was safe. Ulysses wanted to survey the island and check to see if it was safe to be on. He sent one of his men to climb a tree and when he didn’t return, Ulysses sent a second man, then a third. None of them came back, so Ulysses knew something was wrong. Ulysses decided to climb the tree himself. As he was climbing, he realized that the tree didn’t seem much like a normal tree. It didn’t have branches and the trunk was the leg of a giant. Not just as ordinary giant, it was a cannibal. These giants devoured lots of men. Ulysses learned to adapt to his surrounds before he explores. Ulysses and his men stayed at Cannibal Beach for about 2 or 3 days.

Cannibal Beach- Paximadia(Now)

• The Paximadian islands are two small islands 12 kilometers off the coast of Crete, Greece. Even though this is two islands, from a distance it looks like one. You can go on an excursion boat to tour the islands, as well as go diving and swimming. Paximadia is a great attraction.

Circe’s Island- Aeaea(Then)• Ulysses and his men were hungry and needed

food. They came across an island that looked like it was full of potential. Ulysses was very cautious because he didn’t want to lose any more men. Half the men went to explore and half the men stayed at the beach. When Elpenor’s crew spotted a castle, they were greeted by a women named Circe. Circe was polite and treated them to a feast. Unfortunately for the men, Circe turned them into pigs. Ulysses came to save them with a flower given to him by Hermes to stop Circe’s powers. Ulysses left Circe’s island. Ulysses learned that he should resist temptation. Ulysses and his men stayed here for a few days.

Circe’s Island- Aeaea (Now)

• The island of Aeaea is located near Aethalia, which is a city on the island of Elba slightly west of Italy. This is now a great vacation destination. It has mountains, but it also flat. There is bright blue water surrounding this area, which makes it a very beautiful attraction.

Land of the Dead- River Oceanus (Then)

• Ulysses and his men went to the Land of the Dead because Circe had told them they had to go there to be advised by wise ghosts. Ulysses saw his mother, Achilles, Ajax, Elpenor, Teiresias and others. They all gave him warnings about his future travels and the problems he would face. Ulysses learned that he should be more cautious because the ordinary can be extraordinary. Ulysses and his men stayed here for less than a day.

Land of the Dead- River Oceanus (Now)• Oceanus was a great fresh-water

stream. The sun, moon and stars were all believed to rise and set in its waters.

The Sirens- (Then)

• The Sirens were creatures that looked like a bird from the waist down and a woman from the waist up. They lured people to their deaths by singing whatever the people wanting to hear. Ulysses stuffed his men’s ears with beeswax and he told his men to tie him to the mast of the ship and he wouldn’t jump off. Ulysses learned that he should not give in to temptation and expect the unexpected. Ulysses stayed here for less than a day.

The Sirens- Anthemoessa (Now)

• Sirens lived then on an island, called Anthemoessa, in the sea between Sicily and Italy. Huge boulders surrounded their island where ships would be destroyed if they ventured too closely. Anthemoessa has several hotels and villas to stay at. It is a beautiful place and has lots of things to do such as swimming and relaxing.

Scylla and Charybdis-Straits of Messina (Then)

• Ulysses remembered that the only way to get to Thrinacia was to go between the rocks of the beasts Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla, who lived on the rock on the right side, would devour some of his men. Charybdis, would lived on the rock on the left side, drink the water and spit it back out three times a day causing a whirlpool. Ulysses succeeded to sail down the middle, getting around the two monsters. Ulysses learned that sometimes there is no good choice. Ulysses stayed here for less than a day.

Scylla and Charybdis- Straits of Messina(Now)

• The Straits of Messina are the narrow section of water separating the Italian Peninsula from Sicily. It connects the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Ionian Sea. A ferry service connects Messina on Sicily with the mainland at Villa San Giovanni, which lies several kilometers north of the large city of Reggio Calabria the ferries hold the cars (carriages) of the mainline train service between Palermo and Naples. The strait is characterized by strong tidal currents.

Cattle of the Sun- Thrinacia(Then)

• Ulysses and his men landed on an island, Thrinacia. In the Land of the Dead, Teiresias gave them a warning. He said that if Ulysses and his men come across cattle they shall not eat it, and if they do, they can never see home again. Ulysses and his men were very hungry, so they looked for food. There was scarce amounts. While Ulysses fell asleep, his men ate the cattle. Ulysses learned not to trust his men. Ulysses stayed here for ten days.

Cattle of the Sun- Sicily(Now)

• It is the meeting point between East and West, Africa and Europe, the beautiful island of Sicily is the foundation of Mediterranean culture and one of Europe's most enticing destinations. Sicily has an ever-present scent of lemon trees. You can see Mount Etna and walk the 142 ceramic steps of Caltagirone.

Calypso- Ogygia (Then)

• Ulysses awoke on a bed of sweet smelling grass without his men. A beautiful women, Calypso, found him and took him. Calypso showed him what his family was doing now. Calypso wanted to turned Ulysses immortal and have him stay with her in Ogygia forever. Ulysses decided he had to go back home. Ulysses stayed here with Calypso for about seven years. Ulysses learned that sometimes no matter where you are there is no place like home.

• WARNING: DO NOT GIVE UP, BECAUSE YOU WILL THINK THAT YOU ARE SOMEONE YOURE NOT.

Calypso- Gozo (Now)

• Gozo is in the islands of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. The island of Gozo is about the size of Manhattan, with a fraction of the population, only boasting some 31000 inhabitants. However, this island, second only in size to Malta itself in the Maltese archipelago, is crammed with excitement, activities, archaeological wonders and the best secluded beaches for those relaxing lazy days; making it a perfect holiday destination. You are able to have privacy on the many small beaches and bays, and intriguing caves positively invite exploration at Mgarr Ix-Xini. Xlendi features fantastic reef formations to pique the interest of scuba divers and snorkelers. The island has been occupied for millennia and is even reputed to be the home of Homer’s Calypso, a nymph who held Odysseus captive for years, before releasing him to continue on his travels.

Ino’s Veil- (Then)

• Calypso had given Ulysses a beautiful tight little vessel making it possible to get back home. Seventeen days out of Ogygia, Poseidon put a storm over Ulysses ship and Ulysses was stranded in the sea holding on to a piece of wood. Ulysses almost gave up, however, there was a Nereid near, Ino. She handed him a veil that was unsinkable in any storm so he can swim back to shore safely. He was able to get to a safe place, but he was cut and bruised by huge rocks on the way. Ulysses was protected by Ino’s veil for 3 days until he reached the coast of Phaeacia. Ulysses learned to trust others.

Ino’s Veil- Ionian Sea (Now)

• The Ionian Sea is located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by southern Italy and Sicily. The Ionian Sea has deep and cool sea waters and cultural heritage. It is the ideal place for a holiday as well as a relaxation. It has excellent hotel accommodations, restaurants, diving centers, sea sports, cultural events, and a multitude of sights, historic monuments and museums worth visiting.

Nausicaa- Phaeacia (Then)• Ulysses arrives at Phaeacia, where King Alcinous,

Queen Arete and their daughter sixteen-year-old Nausicaa live. Nausicaa has a dream that Athena comes to her and tells her to bring all her clothes to the river to wash them. The next day she brings her servant girls to the river with her and she sees Ulysses. Nausicaa sees that Ulysses is hurt so she brings him to her castle. Nausicaa falls in love with Ulysses. King Alcinous consulted an oracle and it said to beware of strangers, shipwrecks, storytellers and Ulysses combined all three. King Alcinous wanted Ulysses far away from the castle so he planned to kill Ulysses. Instead of killing him, the king and queen gave him a ship so that he could safely sail back home to Ithaca. Ulysses stayed here for about a week. Ulysses learned that there is no place like home.

Nausicaa- Corfu (Now)

• In Corfu, there are many public attractions open to everyone from swimming in pools to diving in the great Ionian Sea. You can stay up in the hills in beautiful hotels or houses, with exquisite restaurants and dining halls. You can tour the beach at night or day, and look over the hills to get an astounding view of the sea and Ithaca.

The Return- Ithaca (Then)

• After leaving Nausicaa in Phaeacia, Ulysses was finally back home in Ithaca after 20 years. He looked about the island but it didn’t seem the same as it was before. Ulysses knew that it would not be the same until he regained power from the suitors trying to take over his throne. Ulysses pretended to be an old beggar in order to get into the kingdom.

The Return- Ithaca (Now)

• Explore the island of Ithaca, the great home of who once roamed the island, Ulysses. Ithaca was paradise back then and now, with beautiful blue seas and mountains, hills and beaches. There are gorgeous hotels you can stay in, and the best services such as spas, dining halls and saunas. There are more than enough ways to get a look around Ithaca, by going kayaking, sightseeing or paragliding.
