The 11 official Appalachian Trail Guides are updated every five to ten years. Each guide, packaged in a resealable plastic bag, includes a pocket-sized book and a set of up to seven sheets of detached, water- and tear-resistant topographic maps with elevation profiles—a package that allows you to choose whether to take a book or maps or both on the Trail. The books have background information, points of interest, and road-access directions, as well as detailed Trail descriptions. The books and four- to nine-color maps assist you on both long- and short-distance hikes of the A.T. and major side trails. Descriptions include water sources and shelter and camping sites. Map sets from guides (except Maine) and some individual maps can be purchased separately; they are listed below by state.
