Emergency Response / Non-Emergency Response Approval

Training providers worldwide train delegates to OPITO standards, ensuring that each member of staff within the oil and gas industry has the knowledge and competence to travel to and work offshore.

Training centres can apply for approval to deliver training in line with these standards. Our approval procedure and monitoring activity is a robust process and ensures that training is safe and quality assured with competence based, consistent outcomes.

Achieving Emergency Response / Non-Emergency Response Approval

Training Providers looking to apply for approval are required to follow our simple approval process which consists of two stages:

Application and desktop submission – where we will verify that the training provider has the required resources to deliver training and/or assessment and a management system in place that complies with our approval criteria.

An onsite audit – where an OPITO auditor will visit the training provider‘s premises and observe training and/or assessments being carried out against the relevant OPITO standard.

Education

As the oil and gas industry develops within the UK, it is essential that we teach the next generation the benefits of a career in this exciting and innovative sector.

In collaboration with educational establishments, local authorities and companies operating within the oil and gas industry, OPITO’s array of initiatives aim to inspire students of the broad range of career opportunities the oil and gas industry has to offer.

Energise Your Future

Since 2008, our popular interactive career event Energise Your Future has continued to work with senior school pupils, showcasing the roles, opportunities and innovative technology used in the oil and gas industry.

Energise Your Future has become a permanent fixture in the school calendar. Feedback suggests that the combination of hands-on activities and interaction with informative and inspirational oil and gas professionals, has resulted in pupils being able to gather the relevant information required in order to relate their subjects to career options and disciplines in the oil and gas industry.

We are always looking for additional support. Young people engage with positive, energetic businesses and this is a great opportunity for companies to showcase the work they are doing and what they have planned for the future.

Structured Work Placement Programme

In conjunction with a number of organisations in the oil and gas industry, OPITO has developed a unique ‘Structured Work Placement Programme’ for groups of pupils in the North East of Scotland and the East of England.

The programme allows school pupils to interact with industry professionals across a number of different activities throughout the week. We aim to provide pupils with a comprehensive understanding of the oil and gas industry and an awareness of the wide range of attractive career opportunities and pathways available onshore and offshore.

The format for the week is a mix of presentations, workshop visits and practical activities. Additional workshops on interview skills and preparing CVs rounds-off and personalises the pupils’ experience. myOilandGasCareer.com

myOilandGasCareer.com hosts a range of oil and gas career information. Visitors to the site can match skills and ambitions to a number of roles, see how to make the most of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects and get advice on how to make it into the oil and gas industry, from pursuing an apprenticeship to going to university.

StandardsOPITO

www.opito.com

OPITO have been setting standards for the oil and gas industry since 1991 when the organisation was set up to improve workforce safety and competency.

Alongside our oil and gas industry stakeholders, we identify the needs and requirements for new and improved training standards for both the offshore and onshore oil and gas industry. We produce world class, industry driven standards that are recognised globally and we ensure that our approved training providers deliver training in compliance with these standards.

Standards are developed by industry work groups, made up of oil and gas industry representatives, training providers and trade associations. These work groups drive the content of a standard, the purpose, aims and objectives, assessment criteria, training programme and instructor requirements. Working with our stakeholders throughout this process ensures that our standards are current, robust and relevant to the needs of Industry.

We oversee the approved standards and our robust approval process ensures that training is delivered to the standard set and each individual is trained to the same level globally.

Standards are reviewed regularly in partnership with the industry as we strive to improve safety and competency throughout the oil and gas industry.

There are currently four types of standards:

Emergency and Critical Response Standards Developed for survival and where competence is critical in emergency response situations. These standards include a variety of training programmes used by employees working on and travelling to and from offshore installations and vessels, and for competence in managing and supervising emergency response situations.

Industry Training and Competence Standards We assist industry on the development of training and competence for safety critical roles including offshore crane operations, rigging and lifting, painting and blasting, permit to work, gas testing and elected offshore safety representatives.

UK National Occupational Standards National Occupational Standards (NOS) are statements of the standards of performance individuals must achieve when carrying out functions in the workplace, together with specifications of the underpinning knowledge and understanding.

Global Technical Standards Our Global Technical Standards support our Technical Qualifications framework. The disciplines catered for are processing operations hydrocarbons and three maintenance disciplines: electrical, mechanical and instrument and control. We offer a range of qualifications that can be delivered in the training centre via Global Training Standards and workplace environments via Global Occupational Standards.
