Fact. UK Law...

Located on UK’s main campus in Lexington, UK Law is large enough for a diverse curriculum, yet small enough to foster relationships and community. Founded in 1908, UK Law has been approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) since 1925 and was elected to the Order of the Coif, the most prestigious national legal honorary society, in 1931.

The Academic Success Program at UK Law is designed

to provide individual and group support so students can

master learning strategies needed to successfully complete

law school. The Program consists of the Introduction to

Legal Reasoning Program in August, skills seminars

throughout the year for 1Ls, optional skills assessment for

2Ls and 3Ls, individual coaching, and an extensive library

of study aids.

As a 2L and 3L the only required curriculum is

Professional Responsibility, a professional skills course,

and a seminar with a substantial writing requirement.

UK Law’s faculty encourages students in their second

and third year to not only take courses in the area they

expect to practice, but also to gain basic legal literacy

and an understanding of the depth and complexity of

the law as a whole. For course descriptions, please visit

www.law.uky.edu/admissions/coursecatalog.

ALL 1L LAW STUDENTS TAKE A SET CURRICULUM WHICH INCLUDES:

Page 12: UK College of Law Viewbook 2015

Program Requirements

In order to graduate, students must satisfactorily

complete six semesters of full-time law study and 90 hours

of credit in professional law subjects with a GPA of 2.0

or better. The program is designed to be completed in six

successive semesters of academic residence or, under an

accelerated program, in five semesters and two eight-week

summer sessions, allowing graduation in December of the

third year. Full-time is no less than 10 hours, but students

normally enroll in 14-16 credit hours per semester.

Students may also enroll in any other graduate and

undergraduate courses (not counting toward the JD)

without special approval or the payment of additional fees.

“Take time for yourself.”

“Start outlining early!”

“Be sure to ask questions during class.”

“Start on assignments early, as soon as you get them when the information is still fresh.”

“Work together with your classmates. You will get things done faster and more accurately.”

Study Abroad

UK Law students may have the opportunity to study

abroad, and earn credit, during their second or third year.

Currently, UK Law offers an opportunity in the Spring

semester to participate in The London Law Consortium,

which consists of six law schools and offers a culturally

enriching program in the heart of the Bloomsbury district.

To learn more about the London Law Consortium, visit

The Alvin E. Evans Law Library contains the state’s

most comprehensive print collection of primary legal

materials, as well as access to a growing list of premiere

legal databases, including WestlawNext, Lexis Advance,

Checkpoint, Making of Modern Law, and HeinOnline.

In addition, reference services provide students with

assistance in identifying, locating, and using resources

within the collection.

While students have access to the UK wireless network

on campus, the library also maintains desktop computers

within the library, as well as laptops that can be checked

out to law students. The library also houses the UK

The legal community in Lexington is headquartered

downtown near the local and federal courthouses where

they, along with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern

District of Kentucky and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court,

convene. This benefits UK Law and its students by

lending itself to various clinical and externship

opportunities that allow students to obtain practical

experience outside the classroom which helps integrate

substantive and procedural law.

UK Law’s Career Development Office is dedicated to

assisting UK Law students in their employment searches.

UK Law’s employment statistics have consistently

exceeded national averages. UK Law students have the

opportunity to take advantage of a wide array of services

such as one-on-one career counseling, as well as assistance

navigating online resources, seminars, workshops, career

speakers, on-campus interviews, programs, and job

postings. UK Law students have the additional benefit

of receiving career and interview advice from former

practicing attorneys who are also UK Law graduates.

In a typical year, the largest percentage of UK Law

graduates usually go directly into private practice or accept

state/federal judicial clerkships. Some also enter careers

in public interest, business, government, academia, or

decide to pursue further education. Although the majority

of UK Law graduates usually practice in Kentucky, others

opt to pursue careers in other states. The Career

Development Office partners with the UK Law Alumni

Association to provide UK graduates with contact

information for alumni practicing outside of Kentucky.

For more detailed information on employment

statistics or the Career Development Office, visit

www.law.uky.edu/careers.

Two of UK Law’s major strengths are the outstanding

quality of the faculty and their dedication to excellent

teaching. UK Law has strong traditions of open doors,

faculty-student interaction, and faculty concern about

students’ progress and success. The faculty teaching

first-year courses are particularly interested in meeting

with students outside of class to help them make a

successful transition to law school.

UK’s teaching faculty represents a variety of educational

backgrounds. Their combined experience includes many

years of work in major law firms, public interest

programs, and clerking for state and federal judges before

selecting teaching careers. For more information on the

UK Law faculty, please visit their individual profiles at
