Department members present research at conference in Indonesia The Department of Linguistics was well-represented at the Fifth International Symposium on the Languages of Java (ISLOJ 5), held June 6-7 at Universitas Pendidkan Indonesia in Bandung, Indonesia. Current students Eli Asikin-Garmager and Ari Natarina, alumnus Eri Kurniawan, and Prof. William Davies gave presentations at the conference, which focuses on all aspects of the languages spoken on Java and the nearby islands of Bali, Lombok and Madura. El presented “Sasak nasal verb variation – antipassives and extraction asymmetries” with Nur Ahmadi (University of Mataram). Ari presented a paper entitled “The lexical and pragmatic effects of the Balinese morpheme -ang”. Eri gave two joint presentations “The syntactic and pragmatic effects of Sundanese particles the and mah in spoken corpus” with Syarifuddin (UPI) and “Finiteness in Sundanese” with Bill. And Bill also presented “Could you be a little more specific? The Madurese applicative morpheme -aghi”. Eli, Ari and Bill were also in Indonesia working on various research projects.
