Match backgroundFC Basel 1893 and Manchester City FC have both found the UEFA Champions League round of 16 a sizeableobstacle in years gone by, and will be eager to take a significant step towards progress when they meet for the firsttime at St. Jakob-Park.

• While the visitors have lost three of their four last-16 ties – the exception coming in 2015/16, when ManuelPellegrini's City went on to reach the semi-finals – Basel were beaten on their two previous appearances at this stage,in 2012 and 2015.

• In 2014/15, Basel drew 1-1 at home to FC Porto – Danilo, now with City, scoring Porto's goal from the penalty spot –but suffered another heavy away defeat, going down 4-0 in Portugal.

• Basel have already enjoyed success against a Manchester club in this season's competition, beating ManchesterUnited FC 1-0 in Switzerland on matchday five having lost 3-0 at Old Trafford in the opening round of games. Theyfinished second behind the English side in Group A, collecting 12 points – their highest total in a UEFA ChampionsLeague group stage.

• Before thrashing SL Benfica 5-0 on matchday two – their record UEFA Champions League win – Basel were withouta victory in nine European matches, home or away (D3 L6), since a 2-1 home success over AS Saint-Étienne on 25February 2016.

• Raphaël Wicky's team were beaten 2-1 at home by CSKA on matchday four and, despite the United win, have nowlost three of their last five European fixtures at St. Jakob-Park. In fact, Bebbi have won just three of their last tenEuropean home matches, with four losses in that run.

• Beaten away and at home by Arsenal in autumn 2016, the Swiss side had lost their previous three matches againstEnglish clubs before overcoming United, having been unbeaten in the previous four (W3 D1). Overall their recordagainst English rivals is W7 D8 L13 (W6 D3 L5 at home).

• Basel's record in two-legged knockout ties against English clubs is W1 L4. That sole victory came on penaltiesagainst Tottenham Hotspur FC in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals (2-2 away, 2-2 home); they lost 5-2to eventual winners Chelsea FC in the next round (1-2 home, 1-3 away), their most recent knockout contests againsta Premier League team.

• The 2015/16 campaign is the only previous occasion City won their UEFA Champions League group and also theonly time they won the subsequent round of 16 tie.

• This is City's first tie against Swiss opposition.

• Having won their first five games in this season's competition, City lost 2-1 at FC Shakhtar Donetsk on matchdaysix. They had previously won 4-0 at Feyenoord and 4-2 at SSC Napoli.

• A fan of nature and spending his free time in the Swiss mountains, Wicky had a brief period working in Thun's youthset-up in 2009/10 before making his name as a talented youth coach during three years at Servette.

• In 2013 Basel approached him to take charge of their Under-18s and he guided the club's UEFA Youth League teamin 2016/17 before stepping up to the senior side to replace Urs Fischer.

Josep GuardiolaDate of birth: 18 January 1971Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: FC Barcelona, Brescia Calcio (twice), AS Roma, al-Ahly Club, Dorados de SinolaCoaching career: FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München, Manchester City FC

• Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one EuropeanChampion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to 2001. Also had spellswith Brescia, Roma, al-Ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in 2006. Won40 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups throughinjury.

• Having coached Barcelona's B team, he took charge of the senior side in 2008 and won the UEFA ChampionsLeague, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season. In the process he became the sixth man to have lifted theEuropean Cup as player and coach.

• That was just the beginning of a glorious four-season spell which yielded 14 trophies. In his second campaign,Guardiola steered Barcelona to a second Liga title as well as the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA ClubWorld Cup. Even more sucess followed in 2010/11 as Barcelona completed a hat-trick of Spanish titles and, for thesecond time under Guardiola, got the better of Manchester United FC in the UEFA Champions League final.

• In his final season, 2011/12, Guardiola's team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup once morebefore he signed off his reign with a second Copa del Rey triumph. After a year's break, Guardiola took charge ofBayern in June 2013, replacing Jupp Heynckes.

• Collected the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, German Cup and, with a record seven games to spare, theBundesliga title in his first season in Germany. Secured his second successive Bundesliga title the following season, and Bayern again dominated domestically in 2015/16, but all three of Guardiola's UEFA Champions Leaguecampaigns in Bavaria ended in the semi-finals. Opted for a new challenge at Manchester City in summer 2016 but hisfirst year in charge produced Guardiola's first trophy-less campaign as a coach.
