Match backgroundSporting Clube de Portugal are aiming to build on a valuable matchday one victory in Group D, although to do so theymust get the better of FC Barcelona.

• Barcelona themselves are in fine fettle having opened the 2017/18 competition with an impressive 3-0 victory againstJuventus, who ended their interest in last season's UEFA Champions League.

Previous meetings• Gerard Piqué and Lionel Messi were both on target the last time Sporting entertained Barcelona – a 5-2 away win inthe 2008/09 group stage. Thierry Henry, a Marco Caneira own goal and Bojan Krkić, with a penalty after Sportinggoalkeeper Rui Patrício had been sent off, were also on target for Barça, with Miguel Veloso and Liedson getting thehome goals.

• The teams at the Estádio José Alvalade on 26 November 2008 were:Sporting: Rui Patrício, Daniel Carriço, Anderson Polga, Caneira, Grimi, Veloso, Moutinho, Pereirinha, Yannick Djaló(Tiago 73), Romagnoli (Derlei 46), Liedson (Postiga 79).Barcelona: Valdés, Alves, Cáceres, Piqué, Márquez, Xavi (Keita 74), Busquets, Hleb, Gudjohnsen, Messi (Pedro 57),Henry (Bojan 46).

• Barcelona – who went on to finish first in the section, with Sporting second, and ended the season by lifting thetrophy – had won 3-1 at the Camp Nou thanks to goals from Rafael Márquez, a Samuel Eto'o penalty and XaviHernández; Tonel replied for the visitors.

• The Spanish side were also victorious in the teams' only other contest, although by a much narrower margin.Barcelona's Júlio Alberto scored the only goal of their first leg in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup second round but strikes inLisbon from Manuel Negrete and Raphael Meade looked to have taken Sporting through, only for Roberto's 83rd-minute effort to give Barça an away-goals triumph.

Match backgroundSporting• The Lisbon club won 3-2 at Olympiacos FC on matchday one and are unbeaten in three European games thisseason (W2 D1).

• The Portuguese side were 5-1 aggregate winners against Romania's FCSB in the play-offs, following up a 0-0 homedraw with a 5-1 success in Bucharest.

• Sporting are in the group stage for a third time in four years. In 2016/17, they came fourth in their group behindBorussia Dortmund, Real Madrid CF and Legia Warszawa. They lost two of their three home games in last season'scompetition, beating Legia Warszawa 2-0 on matchday two.

• The Portuguese club have therefore lost three of their last five home European games, winning one.

• Their elimination from last season's edition of the UEFA Champions League was confirmed by a 2-1 loss at home toMadrid on matchday five, their third successive loss against Spanish opponents, home and away.

• Sporting have won only one of their last ten fixtures against Spanish opponents (D3 L6), beating Athletic Club 2-1 athome in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg; they bowed out after losing the return 3-1.

• Their overall home record against teams from Spain is W6 D2 L3.

• Jorge Jesus' side qualified by finishing third in the Portuguese Liga in 2016/17.

Barcelona• Barcelona have lost three of their last four away games in the UEFA Champions League, including the 4-0 defeat atParis in last season's round of 16 first leg and an ultimately crucial 3-0 quarter-final first-leg loss at Juventus. Theyhave won just four of their last 11 away matches in the competition, drawing two and losing five.

• This is Barcelona's record-equalling 22nd UEFA Champions League group stage campaign, and 14th in succession. They last failed to reach the last 16 in 2000/01, although they did not take part in 2003/04.

• The Blaugrana last failed to progress beyond the round of 16 in 2006/07; their last two campaigns have been endedin the quarter-finals, by Juve last season and Club Atlético de Madrid in 2015/16.

• Barcelona's last trip to Portugal brought a 2-0 success at SL Benfica in the 2012/13 group stage. Their record awayto Portuguese Liga clubs is W4 D3 L4.

• The Blaugrana are unbeaten in their last 14 matches against Portuguese clubs, home and away (W11 D3), since a1-0 loss at CF Os Belenenses in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup first round.

Head coachJorge JesusDate of birth: 24 July 1954Nationality: PortuguesePlaying Career: Sporting Clube de Portugal, GD Peniche, SC Olhanense, CF Os Belenenses, GD Riopele,Juventude SC, UD Leiria, Vitória FC, SC Farense, CF Estrela da Amadora, Benfica e Castelo Branco, SRAlmancilenseCoaching career: Amora FC, FC Felgueiras, CF Estrela da Amadora (twice), Vitória FC, Vitória SC, Moreirense FC,UD Leiria, CF Os Belenenses, SC Braga, SL Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal

• A midfielder at Sporting, Jesus enjoyed a long if low-key career with a number of smaller Portuguese sides beforemoving into coaching with fourth division Amora after hanging up his boots in 1989, leading them to a title. Then ledFelgueiras from the third division to the Liga in successive seasons, though they were relegated in his third campaignin 1995/96.

• Further Liga experience came at hometown side Estrela da Amadora, Setúbal and Guimarães, though he enduredanother relegation with Moreirense in 2004/05. In 2006/07, he guided Belenenses to fifth place and the PortugueseCup final, where despite losing to Sporting they earned a place in the UEFA Cup.

• Even better followed at Braga in 2008/09 as he guided them to UEFA Intertoto Cup success and subsequently theUEFA Cup round of 16. A fifth-place Liga finish prompted Benfica to lure him back to Lisbon in 2009 and Jesusrewarded their faith with the league title and League Cup in his debut campaign.

• After completing a hat-trick of Portuguese League Cup triumphs in 2012, Jesus's Benfica came tantalisingly close toan even bigger treble in 2013, only to finish runners-up in both the Portuguese Liga and Cup and lose the UEFAEuropa League final to Chelsea FC.

• Signed a two-year contract extension in June 2013 and led Benfica to another UEFA Europa League final thefollowing season, although they again lost, this time to Sevilla FC. That disappointment was somewhat soothed by aclean sweep of the three domestic trophies, with another league and League Cup secured in 2014/15, during whichJesus became the Benfica coach with the most victories and the most league matches. Unexpectedly left to joinSporting in June 2015, taking the club to the Liga's runners-up spot in his first season – behind Benfica – and third thefollowing year.

Ernesto ValverdeDate of birth: 9 February 1964Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: Deportivo Alavés, RCD Espanyol, FC Barcelona, Athletic Club, RCD MallorcaCoaching career: Athletic Club (twice), RCD Espanyol, Olympiacos FC (twice), Villarreal CF, Valencia CF, FCBarcelona

• Known as 'Txingurri' – or worker ant – as a player, former striker Valverde scored 44 goals in 170 appearances overa six-year stay with Athletic. Had previously helped Espanyol to a third-place Liga finish in 1987 and an appearance inthe following season's UEFA Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

• Began coaching career in Athletic's youth ranks before stepping up to handle first-team affairs with the Basque clubin 2003/04; guided the Leones to UEFA Cup qualification in his first term in charge.

• Valverde again found himself losing a UEFA Cup final on penalties in 2007 – this time as coach of Espanyol – withLiga rivals Sevilla FC emerging victorious in Glasgow.

• In his first season outside Spain, steered Olympiacos to a Greek league and cup double in 2008/09 before signing aone-year deal with Villarreal in June 2009. Was sacked the following January with the Yellow Submarine in tenth.

• Rejoined Olympiacos in August 2010, lifting another championship at the end of his first campaign. Added a seconddomestic double the next year but then stood down, taking the Valencia helm in December 2012 on a deal until theend of the season. Reappointed by Athletic in June 2013 and took them to fourth in the Liga in his first term back, winning the 2015 Spanish Super Cup with a 5-1 defeat of Barcelona – where he succeeded Luis Enrique as headcoach in May 2017.
