Match backgroundPSV Eindhoven kick off the new UEFA Champions League campaign against the team who ended their involvementin the old one. It was Club Atlético de Madrid, last term's runners-up, who eliminated the Dutch club on penalties in theround of 16.

Previous meetings• PSV and Atlético did not muster a goal between them in last season's two encounters, drawing 0-0 in Eindhoven,where Gastón Pereiro was sent off for the home team, and again in Madrid. Diego Simeone's men prevailed 8-7 onpenalties, Luciano Narsingh the only player to err from the spot, striking the crossbar before Juanfran sealed PSV'sfate.

• When the clubs met in the 2008/09 group stage, Atlético won 3-0 in Eindhoven on matchday one before beating PSV2-1 at home.

Coach and player links• Simeone captained Argentina in a 2-1 loss to Phillip Cocu's Netherlands in the 1998 FIFA World Cup quarter-final inMarseille.

• Simeone lost 1-0 at PSV as an SS Lazio player in the UEFA Champions League first group stage in September2001.

• Cocu made 292 appearances for Barcelona between 1998 and 2005.

• He faced Atlético six times (W2 D2 L2) and was sent off in a 0-0 Liga draw at the Vicente Calderón in September2003. Fernando Torres started the game for the home side as did current assistant coach Germán Burgos. Simeonewas an unused substitute.

• Andrés Guardado played for RC Deportivo La Coruña (2007–12) and Valencia CF (2012–14). He scored Deportivo'swinner in a 2-1 Liga home victory against Atlético on 21 November 2009.

• Kevin Gameiro, on his club debut, converted a late penalty against Deportivo Alavés on the opening day of theseason.

• Koke set up Spain's first goal in their 8-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory over Liechtenstein, delivering a free-kickfor Diego Costa to head in.

• Miguel Ángel Moyá has been struggling with a knee problem; Alessio Cerci has not played since April because of hisown knee injury.

• The epitome of versatility, Cocu was capable of operating as a central or left-sided midfielder, at full-back, or even asa second striker. He started his career in the Dutch second division with AZ before developing into one of his country'sbest young players under the guidance of Herbert Neumann during five years at Vitesse.

• In 1995 he moved to PSV, where he won the title and the Dutch Cup, scoring 31 goals in 93 Eredivisie matches overthree seasons. Left for Barcelona in 1998 and won the title in his first campaign, the highlight of a six-season staybefore he returned to Eindhoven.

• Cocu was inspirational as PSV won the double in 2004/05 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA ChampionsLeague. He won two more championships in Eindhoven before finishing his career with Al-Jazira Club in 2007/08.

• Made his international debut against Germany in April 1996 and played at EURO '96, the 1998 FIFA World Cup,UEFA EURO 2000 and was captain during the Netherlands' run to the semi-finals at UEFA EURO 2004. He retiredafter a 1-0 loss to Portugal at the 2006 World Cup in Germany having won 101 caps.

• He became youth coach and assistant coach at PSV, and assisted Bert van Marwijk during the Netherlands' run tothe 2010 World Cup final. In March 2012 he became interim head coach at PSV, promptly winning the Dutch Cup.After working as Dick Advocaat's assistant the next season, he became head coach on 1 July 2013. PSV finishedfourth in his first season before winning the Dutch championship, with Cocu voted Dutch coach of the year in 2015;they retained the title 12 months later.

• Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours toadd to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina.

• Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italiadouble in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a secondspell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club.

• Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and RiverPlate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointmentin December 2011 at Atlético.

• Led Atletico to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and to a Copa del Rey finaltriumph over Real Madrid CF in 2013. A year later, Atlético held off FC Barcelona and Madrid to win their first leaguetitle since 1996, although they lost to Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Took Atlético to another UEFAChampions League final in 2016, although again they lost to Madrid.
