These words made Joe Fredericks (33) stayin the queue for an audition of SA’s GotTalent, after he phoned home telling his wifeAndrea, it was too cold, he was heading back!
“Out of about 7 000 hopefuls on that icy coldJozi morning I made it through to the top 18.That’s quite an achievement, I believe,” saidJoe Fredericks, who was born and raised inthe place where all the elephants are, Addo.
Joe, an Assistant Accountant at MercedesBenz Commercial Vehicles East Rand, wasthe first SA’sGotTalent semi-finalistwith thehighest public votes,whoautomaticallymadeit through to the finale which will will bebroadcast live this Sunday on e.tv at 18:05.
“I discovered that I had talent during aChristmas play in Sub A (Grade 1) whenmy late music teacher Mr Potgieter askedme to sing ‘Stille Nag’.
“I must say I nailed it with my soprano
voice at that time (1988),” said Joe.He matriculated at Gamble Street Second-
ary School in Uitenhage where he became theHead Boy of the school and boarding houseduring 1999. Iwas involvedwith a lot ofmusicprojects and talent competitions and evenwona talent searchcompetitionhostedby theUitenhage Child & Family Welfare Society.
“A special shout out to Patrick Lindoor orbetter knownas ‘Tururu’.He is one ofmy rolemodels and a great musician.”
Joe is currently staying in Brakpan and heand his wife Andrea have two beautiful kidsJazmyn (8) and Nehemiah (5).
“They are my everything and my biggestfans. I love them madly. I am so blessed andI believe that is only God’s favour. I am thethird child ofmy late parentsMrandMrsFre-dericks. I miss them so much, but know theyare smiling down on me right now,” said Joein conclusion.

Algoa FM has partnered with its weekendlunch presenter Tové Kane to open the Schoolof Broadcasting in the Eastern Cape.
This is a first of its kind for the province,according to Kane.
What is just as exciting is that BrandwagHigh School has started its own onlinestreaming radio station to instil confidence intheir learners when it comes to communica-tion. Thus Algoa FM and Kane have decidedto give a free course to one of the school’slearners.
“Some 25 years in the radio industry andrelated fields have given Tové an edge in un-derstanding the art of communicating,” saysAlgoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.
Tové graduated from Rhodes University in1992, worked at Talk Radio 702 in 1992 duringher undergraduate studies, served as theBreakfast Jock at Smart FM in 1994 and as asports anchor on Talk Radio 702.
She worked as a presenter on 94.7 HighveldStereo from 1996 – 2006, and won the CrystalAward for Best Radio DJ, defeating the othernominees for this award, including Alex Jay,
Jeremy Mansfield, Gareth Cliff, DJ Fresh.Her career includes working on Jacaranda
FM between 2006 and 2009 and again in 2010,after which she joined Talk Radio 702 topresent Solid Gold.
“The school is not just aimed at aspirant ra-dio or TV broadcasters, but is ideal for anywho wants to enhance their vocal ability andopen up new opportunities,” says Kane.
“It will open windows of opportunity formany people including students/scholarswith a dream of being on radio, business peo-ple who need to improve their presentation
skills and vocal delivery, toastmasters, peo-ple in theatre, voice artists, and managers orpeople aspiring to management positions.
Kane will be supported by the professionalAlgoa FM team to present elements of thecourse. It will consist of 10 interactive two-hour sessions hosted in the Algoa FM studiosover a period of five weeks. There will bethree course levels - Introduction, Intermedi-ate and Professional.

As inwoner van Despatch het hy ’n byna on-aangename onderonsie op die dorp ervaar bydie enkelbaan-sirkel in HF Verwoerd-rylaan.’n Vrouebestuurder het hom geskel omdat hyvolgens haar “nie weet hoe ’n sirkel werknie”. Sywas egter die skuldigewatnie die ver-keersreëls ten opsigte van sirkels ken nie.
“Ek was reeds in die sirkel toe sy van regsaangery kom. Sy was baie ontstoke en vanmening dat ek voor haar ingery het. Dit is toewat ek besluit, maar sy behoort te weet sy isdie een wat nie weet hoe werk dit nie!”

TheNelsonMandelaBayTaxpayers’Asso-ciation in conjunction with local civil
rights organisations submitted a report con-taining information regarding large-scalefraud in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropoli-tan Municipality to Public Protector, Ad-vocate Thuli Madonsela.
It was submitted by vice-chairman of thelocal AfriForum branch, Kobus Gerber andthe general advisor of Community Struc-tures at the civil rights organisation, PieterRautenbach.The report stems from the R2 billionwhich
was allocated to a bus transport system forthe Metro after the 2010 Soccer World CupTournament.Taxis were removed from certain routes,
and the Metro is still paying more thanR6 500 per taxi per month in compensationto taxi owners, while no buses have beenplaced on the routes.The new buses andmore than 60 taxis have
been gathering dust in storage for years.More than one company were appointed todeal with the administration and payment oftaxi owners.Hundreds of millions of rand were paid to
consultants without the project being final-ised. Investigations exposed that eight com-
panies - which the Metro is working with -belong to the same person.Thirty million rand was paid out to con-
sultants for marketing of the bus systemwhich does not exist.“Advocate Madonsela told businessmen
and –women that the business fraternityshould not think that they will make moneyby ‘feeding the crocodile’,” said vice-chair-man of the local AfriForum branch, KobusGerber.“She said the same crocodilewill in the end
bite its feeder.Wewill continue to bring busi-ness people, local government officials andpoliticians to book when they transgress.”Rautenbach, General Advisor of Commu-
nity Structures at AfriForum announcedthat they would also focus their attention onalleged irregularities in the office of themayor regarding the establishment ofsatellite offices allegedly used as politicalrecruitment offices.“The expenses of speakers who addressed
the ANC Caucus were paid by the office ofthe mayor with taxpayers’ money,” Rauten-bach concluded.

The wish for parents from Despatch tolet their 5-year old blonde girl with cer-ebral palsy experience the freedom of
walking was fulfilled! This is thanks to thekindness of the community, expats living inDublin and especially the men from RoundTable 14 Uitenhage.
“Elana now is such a happy child and youall made it possible. Thank you to each andevery individual, organisation, club, compa-ny and also the Workshop Crew MotorcycleClub who all showed true interest in Elanaand helped her to be able have a slightlymorenormal life - like a little girl shouldhave,” saidElandré and Zena Hanekom, Elana’s parents.
“We feel soblessedandare grateful asElanaenjoys the Upsee walking harness and can’twait to take her daily stroll. Her legs still gettired quickly, but she is getting the feel of itand we are already struggling to get her out!”
Elana was born on the 21st November 2008at 32 weeks - 8 weeks premature. Everythingwent well, but then her lungs collapsed andas a result of oxygen shortage, she was leftwith brain damage and accordingly diag-nosed with cerebral palsy.
“Elana is unable to talk, walk, stand inde-
pendently and is wheelchair bound. As shegrows, the challenges also become bigger.”
An article published in the UD News dur-ing July 2014 regarding Elana who needs aUpsee walking harness, caught the heart ofRound Table members and especially formermember André Dorfling.
He managed to get hold of a harness in Ire-land. Members of Round Table and the LionsClub of Uitenhage then raised funds duringtheir annual Melodrama with the purpose ofimporting the device for Elana.

Uitenhage has always been known as theGarden Town, but over the years manythings have caused people to lose interest intheir gardens and this resulted in the townlosing a lot of character.
The Nursery is trying to revive the idea ofgood, old-fashioned gardening, pride in one’sown garden and setting the town ablaze withcolour once again.
“We aim to get folks interested again, togrow their own veggies and flowers and totake pride in their achievements.
“This is also quite a challenge with a short-age of water, menacing winds and the intenseheat during our summer period,” said Maris-sa Bradley from the Nursery, which is situat-ed at 34 Graaff Reinet Road, Uitenhage.
They have been running a competition
since August and folks from all over townhave entered.
The gardens have been judged and the win-ners will be announced at The Nursery onSaturday at 11:00.
“We have wonderful sponsors on boardand the excitement is real! We will also onSaturday announce plans for next year’scompetition, which promises to be even big-ger, with more categories and wonderfulprizes to be won,” said Marissa.
)Proceeds (entry fees) of the competitionwill be in aid of the Uitenhage SPCA andfunds will also be handed over to ChristelleErasmus on Saturday when the winners areannounced.

The Fountains Mall Rally is expected to befast and a test of high speed endurance for
drivers and navigators who are competing forpoints towards the end of the year R 50 000.00prize, with 20 entries expected from as far asKwazulu Natal, George, Cape Town and EastLondon on Saturday.
The starting point for the rally will be theFountains Mall parking area which is a tighttest of skill around the trees and islands. Rallycars will arrive from 08:00 for scrutineering
and documentation, with the first car enter-ing the stage at 10:00 and the remaining field,at two minute intervals.
The rally organisers, Algoa Rally Club,have catered for spectators to view the carsin action around the Fountains Mall parkingarea, followed by a drifting car display, andthen will have time to follow the stages fromthe next gravel stages, starting just off the Hu-mansdorp road towards Jubilee farms, andend at the Swart Rivier.
The rally will move to the next stages fromKabeljous towards Zuurbron then Hankeyalong the Gamtoos Valley Road to Spekboom
Lapa for a lunch time service. Spekboom Lapahas a Farm restaurant where spectators canhave lunch on the deck and see the rally carsperforming in the valley of the Spekboomstage.
The rally will repeat stages from Melon,Gamtoos and Zuurbron, returning to the mallmid afternoon to do another two stages at theFountains Mall parking area. MagneticStorm will set up PA system next to rally con-trol, who will keep spectators informed on therally progress.
The rally will end with cars parked at themall and the prize giving will take place at E-
Street restaurant in the Mall where GabrielJewellers will hand over luxury Tissot watch-es to the winners.
Spectator areas are free and the rally willprovide entertainment for the family whoareadvised to pack a picnic basket and follow therally stages to see the contingent of Volkswa-gen Polo, Golfs, Toyotas, Fords, Nissans, Dat-sun SSS and more, around the tar stages andin full flight along the gravel roads which areexpected to be fast.
