On Nov. 4, ten Caruthers ninth grade DAstudents, along with their counterpartsfrom Fresno’s Sunnyside High School andSelma High School DA, attended theCRMC Surgery Department Open House.Led by CRMC’s Education andDevelopment Specialist Linette Phillips, DAstudents were welcomed by several sur-gery department health professionals andstaff. The DA students dressed in surgicalattire, saw simulated brain and gastroin-testinal surgeries, and learned about thesterilization of surgical tools and the impor-tant processes in the preparation requiredfor surgeries. DA students were escorted tothe CRMC helicopter pad where they metwith first responders and viewed inside thehelicopter.

Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC)Surgery Department Open House

This past fall the UCSF Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research (LaCMER) Junior Doctors Academy (JDA) at CaruthersElementary welcomed 30 new seventh grade students and four new eighth grade students to the program. In addition, the DoctorsAcademy (DA) at Caruthers High School was pleased to add 28 ninth grade students. UCSF Fresno LaCMER and Caruthers Unified SchoolDistrict, looks forward to nurturing the development of the next generation of health care professionals.

In the classroom, JDA and DA students began their cultural competency projects, reviewed new medical education units, engaged withhealth professional guest speakers in the classroom, and prepared for the upcoming summer programs. Outside of the classroom, JDA andDA students visited university campuses, medical schools, medical facilities and learned at enrichment centers throughout California.Through these experiences, JDA and DA students learned about different health career opportunities and college life.

This fall, Caruthers JDA and DA studentsexplored new universities and experi-enced the higher educational opportuni-ties that California has to offer. Studentsvisited California State UniversityMonterey Bay (CSUMB), UC Berkeley,UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and FresnoState. Students are looking forward tovisiting UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, UCMerced, Stanford and UCSF School ofMedicine this upcoming spring. Thankyou to Caruthers Unified for valuing theimportance of the JDA and DA study tripexperiences which show students theeducational opportunities outside ofCaruthers.

UC Berkeley (Berkeley) and LawrenceHall of Science

Mr. Jeff Morrow’s ninth grade DA stu-dents visited Berkeley and the LawrenceHall of Science on Aug. 4 as part of theDA Incoming Freshmen SummerTransition Program. At UC Berkeley, DAstudents embarked on a 90 minute guid-ed tour and attended a presentation ledby staff and students from the BerkeleyBiology Scholars Program, a longtimesupporter of our Central Valley DA stu-dents. The trip was complemented with avisit to UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall ofScience where students experiencedhands-on physics and biology activities.

UCLA

On Oct. 30, Mr. Barton Keeler’s 10thgrade DA students visited UCLA. DAstudents toured the historic campus andreceived a presentation by the AcademicAdvancement Program (AAP), a long-time supporter of our Central Valley DAstudents. The DA students were pleasedto meet with several DA alumni currentlyattending UCLA who provided them withinsight about campus life and highschoolpreparation.DA studentsattended apresentationby the UCLAAllied HealthProgram atthe UCLAMedicalCenter. TheDA students learned about various alliedhealth careers in health and medicineand had a “Meet and Greet” roundtablepresentation with a surgical technician,child life specialist, and a current med-ical student from the Central Valley.

Santa Barbara (UCSB)

On Dec. 4, Mrs. Martha Martinez’s 11thgrade DA students met with DA alumniwho are attending UCSB, toured the col-lege campus, met with admissions rep-resentatives and attended a mentalhealth psychosocial workshop with BrianOlowude, PhD, Co-Director of UCSB’sCounseling and Psychological Services(CAPS) at UCSB. The DA studentsenjoyed the beautiful campus that over-looks the Pacific Ocean.Study Trips

In preparation for submitting their col-lege applications this fall, Mr. BrandonWard’s 12th grade DA students, alongwith 12th grade DA students from Selmaand Sunnyside high schools, spent aday at Fresno State on September 13.DA students participated in a collegescavenger hunt where they learnedabout student resources, met with theHealth Careers Opportunity Program(HCOP), and completed their day atFresno State with bowling, pool andpizza. The DA students ended their dayat Fresno County Office of Education’sCollege Night at the downtown FresnoConvention Center.

California State University, MontereyBay (CSUMB) & Monterey BayAquarium

On Oct. 24, Mrs. Spring Bibian’s seventhgrade JDA Caruthers Elementary stu-dents traveled to CSUMB where stu-dents learned about kinesiology, metwith current students and toured the col-lege campus. The trip also included avisit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium

where students learned about marinelife, conservation, and the importance ofpreserving the world’s oceans.

Over 90 DA students and staff receivedbleeding control first responder trainingfrom Community Regional Medical Center(CRMC) Trauma Department on Oct. 25and Nov. 29. Through the “Stop the Bleed”initiative, CRMC staff made the trip to

Caruthers as part of an endeavor to trainthe community on the importance ofknowing how to stop life-threateningbleeding. Students enjoyed the hands ontraining and the opportunity to work close-ly with the visiting health professionals.

My name is Jeff Morrowand I am in my third yearof teaching at CaruthersHigh School. This is alsomy third year as a DA advi-sor. I currently teachIntroduction to Health toour DA freshmen, Anatomyand Physiology to our DAsophomores, and Biology. I graduatedfrom Fresno State with a BA inAnthropology hoping to become anarchaeologist. Instead, I spent 20 years inthe private business sector as a softwaretrainer and product manager before decid-ing to become a high school teacher.During my years with WebMD, I spent lotsof time around healthcare professionalsand the patients they serve. I enjoy sharingthose experiences and real-life stories withthe students in our Doctors Academy.

On Dec. 5, resident physi-cians, Drs.Bangalore andGill, from ValleyHealth TeamResidencyProgram, visitedMrs. SpringBibian’s seventh grade JDA students. Thedoctors worked with students on how totake blood pressures and taught themabout the warning signs associated withthe development of hypertension.

Dermatology

On Dec. 6, dermatologist Leah Press, MD,visited Mr. Barton Keeler’s 10th grade DAclass. Dr. Press talked with the studentsabout her journey to becoming a dermatol-ogist and gave students helpful advice tothose preparing for careers in medicine.Using an interactive video monitor, Dr.Press showed students about the differentlayers of the skin, aging, acne and skincancer. The DA students experienced first-hand how Dr. Press uses liquid nitrogen totreat patients with different skin issues.
