252 BRUIN FOOTBALL HISTORY

December 29, 2000 — Sun BowlWisconsin 21, UCLA 20The already hobbled Bruins lost five starters, including quarterbackCory Paus, during the game to injury and suffered a Wells FargoSun Bowl loss to Big 10 foe Wisconsin. Following Wisconsin’s opening score, UCLA took it to the Bad-gers physically, scoring on its first two drives of the contest. FreddieMitchell and Paus teammed up on a 64-yard scoring play andChris Griffith followed with a 31-yard field goal to give the Bruins a10-7 lead. Tailback DeShaun Foster rushed for 100 yards in the firsthalf, including a seven-yard scoring run late in the second quarterwhich gave the Bruins a 17-7 lead. However, the Bruins would return from the lockerroom withoutPaus, who suffered a broken collarbone on the final play of the firsthalf after completing eight of 15 passes for 174 yards and thescoring toss to Mitchell. Also among the missing was startingcornerback Jason Bell, who suffered a broken foot and sprainedankle on the Badgers’ first scoring play. Ricky Manning, the otherstarting corner, was forced from the game with a concussion. Bythe time the game was over, the Bruins would also be playingwithout safety Marques Anderson, who sprained an ankle, andmiddle linebacker Robert Thomas, who aggravated an injury to hisfoot. Back-up quarterback Scott McEwan completed four of five passeson the first drive following the intermission, and Griffith kicked a 25-yard field goal which gave UCLA a 20-7 lead. However, as thegame wore on, the Badger offense frustrated the depleted Bruindefense. Wisconsin rushed for 123 yards in the second half. Ondefense, the Badgers crowded the line of scrimmage and heldFoster to just seven yards on the ground in the second half. After Wisconsin closed to 20-14 on a late third quarter scoringpass, the Bruins responded by moving to the Badger 32. On fourth-and-4, a fake field goal attempt was thwarted when Griffith, aftertaking a handoff from holder Drew Bennett, was stopped 2 yardsshort of the first down. With Thomas and Anderson now on thesidelines, Wisconsin drove 70 yards in 12 plays for the lead score onits first possession of the fourth quarter. The Bruins could notmanage a first down on their subsequent possession and theteams traded punts. On its next opportunity, McEwan moved theBruins into Badger territory. On the drive, Mitchell grabbed his ninthpass of the day for 180 receiving yards to set a Sun Bowl gamerecord. However, on fourth-and 3 from the Wisconsin 40-yard line,Jon Dubravac could not hang on to a McEwan toss and the ballwent over with just over two minutes left on the game clock. The depleted Bruin defense, which became just the third teamto limit running back Michael Bennett to less than 100 yards, responded to the challenge and forced a Wisconsin punt withabout one minute remaining in the game. However, on UCLA’s firstplay from scrimmage, what turned out to be McEwan’s final passof the day was tipped, misdirected and intercepted to seal theBruins’ fate. McEwan played well in his relief role, but did not take the Bruinsinto the endzone on the day. He did manage to complete 12 of 18passes for 135 yards.

253BRUIN FOOTBALL HISTORY

December 25, 2002 — Las Vegas BowlUCLA 27 , New Mexico 13

UCLA won its 10th bowl game in its last 14 post-season outings witha 27-13 defeat of New Mexico in the Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl. Interim head coach Ed Kezirian guided the Bruin team to victoryin a game dominated by the defense. Neither team managed anoffensive touchdown until the fourth quarter, but by that time theBruin special teams and defense had staked UCLA to a comfortablelead. “Our mind-set going in was our defense was going to beat theirdefense,” said linebacker Marcus Reese, one of 13 Bruin seniorsdressed for the game. “We had to make more plays than theirdefense, and I think we did that.” A 74-yard punt return for a touchdown by Craig Bragg turned themomentum to the Bruin’s side after New Mexico was forced to punton its first possession of the second half. “The offense really wasn’t moving, so I knew I had to go out thereand make a big play,” said Bragg. “I took it upon myself, and theguys on the punt return team did an excellent job of blocking. OnceI hit the corner, I knew I was going to score a touchdown.” True freshman safety Jarrad Page added a 29-yard interceptionreturn for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter and Tyler Ebellmade 27-6 with a one-yard scoring run with 10:40 left in the game. Senior placekicker Chris Griffith converted on the extra pointfollowing Page’s touchdown and in the process set a school recordfor most career extra points with 136 conversions. Fellow senior kicker Nate Fikse got the Bruins on the board earlyin the game when he connected on field goals from 49 yards in thefirst quarter and 39 yards in the second quarter. The successfulkicks marked the 11th and 12th consecutive field goals of the seasonfor Fikse who handled both the placekicking and punting choresover the final five games of the season. The 49-yard kick by Fikse came after linebacker Brandon Chillarrecovered a Dontrell Moore fumble caused by safety Matt Ware. New Mexico was unable to move the ball after the Bruin kickoffand was forced to punt. On the first play from scrimmage followingthe punt, Desmar Black intercepted a Drew Olson pass and re-turned it 55 yards for a touchdown. The extra point, attempted byKatie Hnida who became the first woman to play in a Division I-Afootball game, was blocked by Chillar. The Bruins tied the score at six on the 39-yarder by Fikse whichcapped off a six-play 24 yard drive and went to halftime with thescore even. (21-point deficit in the second quarter) No. 15 UCLA stagedone of the greatest comebacks in school history, rallying from a 21-0 second-quarter deficit to defeat Arizona State, 38-31, at the RoseBowl. The 21-point comeback matched the largest in UCLA annals, tying the mark set at Michigan in 1982 in a 31-27 victory.

With 5:28 remaining in the second quarter, the Bruins trailed 21-0, had the ball on their own five-yard line and had lost DeShaunFoster with a fractured bone in his right hand. But on third-and-11 atthe four-yard line, Cory Paus found Brian Poli-Dixon for 17 yards anda first down. Later on the drive, Jermaine Lewis gained 32 yards tothe Sun Devil 23-yard line and on the next play Akil Harris, on just thesecond carry of his career, raced around right end for a 23-yardtouchdown and the comeback had begun.

On the first play of the second half, Lewis burst free and raced57 yards, the longest run of his career, for a touchdown to make thescore 21-14. With just over 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter,Joe Hunter picked off a pass at the ASU 21-yard line and less thantwo minutes later, Harris scored his second touchdown from sevenyards out to tie the game.

On UCLA’s next possession, Paus drove the Bruins 56 yards on12 plays and gave the Bruins their first lead when he found FreddieMitchell over the middle for an eight-yard touchdown.

The Sun Devils countered on their next snap, scoring on a 60-yard pass to tie the game at 28. However, the Bruins seized the leadfor good with 1:31 remaining when Paus found Mitchell behind thedefense and the two combined for an 80-yard touchdown, theninth-longest pass play in school history, to complete a 28-pointquarter.

In the fourth quarter, the teams traded field goals and ASU’sfinal shot at the end zone from 49 yards out was batted to the groundto preserve the 38-31 victory.

Paus, playing his first full game of the year (he played only threesnaps in the opener due to his separated right shoulder), completed17 of 30 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Poli-Dixon ledthe team with eight receptions for 107 yards and Mitchell produced125 yards and two scores with his four catches.

Lewis, stepping in for the injured Foster, rushed for 104 yards, the second-highest total of his career, and one touchdown. Harris, seeing the first extensive action of his career, rushed for 100 yardsand two scores.

Defensively, UCLA held the Sun Devils to 185 yards and 10 pointsin the final 30 minutes to aid the comeback. Strong safety AudieAttar, starting in place of injured Marques Anderson, led the Bruinswith eight tackles. Middle linebacker Robert Thomas made sevenstops, including one for loss, and cornerback/special teams per-former Keith Short added five stops.

Cornerback Joe Hunter, free safety Jason Zdenek and outsidelinebacker Tony White each added four stops. The defense forcedthree turnovers (a fourth was by the ASU defense after an intercep-tion) and made a season-high four sacks.

(16-point deficit in the second quarter) In their first bowl gameunder second-year coach Bob Toledo, the Bruins got off to a slug-gish start, falling behind 16-0 in the first half before making adramatic second half comeback to beat 20th-ranked Texas A&M,29-23.

Despite outgaining the Aggies 393-247 on the day, the Aggiesused their defense and one big play to take a 16-point lead late in thesecond quarter. Midway through the first quarter the Bruins ap-peared ready to take the lead as they drove to the Aggie nine-yardline. However, Texas A&M linebacker Dat Nguyen picked off a CadeMcNown pass and returned it to the 36 before lateralling to team-mate Brandon Jennings. Jennings took it the final 64 yards for a 7-0 lead. Then, with the Bruins backed up inside their own five, AggieZerek Rollins corralled McNown in the end zone for a safety and itwas 9-0. Minutes later, Dante Hall took a hand-off and ran 76 yardsfor a touchdown. At 16-0 the Bruins faced their biggest deficit sincea 27-3 second half score against Tennessee.

Reeling and in desperate need of momentum, the Bruins faceda third-and-thirteen at the Aggie 42 with twenty-four seconds to go.McNown hit Farmer over the middle with a twenty yard pass, andtwo plays later, hit Jim McElroy for a touchdown with two seconds togo before halftime. Chris Sailer’s kick sent the Bruins to the lockerroom down only 16-7. Skip Hicks took a McNown pass 41 yards onthe Bruins’ first possession of the second half to cut the deficit to 16-14. Hicks would finish the day with 193 all-purpose yards (140 on theground and 53 receiving).

However, the Aggies came right back on their next possession.Following a crucial fourth down conversion, Chris Cole ran 43 yardson a reverse to extend the lead back to nine at 23-14.

The Bruins, however, would respond before the end of thequarter. After a trade of punts, the Bruins went 65 yards in eightplays, culminated by McNown’s 20-yard touchdown run and it was23-21.

In the fourth quarter, the Bruins defense stepped it up to give theoffense a chance to win. The Aggies had no first downs in the fourthquarter and had minus-one yard of total offense.

The Bruins finally took the lead when Ryan Neufeld took areverse into the end zone. McNown ran in the two-point conversionand it was 29-23.

The Bruins stopped the Aggies on their final two possessionsand ran out the clock for the win.

The Bruins narrowed the deficit to 38-24 on a 47-yard field goalby Bjorn Merten with 6:12 remaining. The Bruins quickly got the ballback after pinning USC against its own goal-line and forcing a shortpunt. Nine plays and 41 yards later freshman Keith Brown scoredfrom the one-yard line to slice the margin to 38-31 at the 2:49 mark.

The ensuing onside kick was recovered by USC and two playslater the Trojans had a first and ten at the Bruin 41 with less than twominutes to play. However, on the next play, junior linebacker DanjuanMagee reached in and hit running back LaVale Woods as he wasabout to break away from the pack, forcing a fumble that seniorcornerback Kusanti Abdul-Salaam recovered and returned to theBruin 44. UCLA had 1:27 on the clock and a single timeout left to go56 yards, trailing 38-31.

Quarterback Cade McNown began the drive by connectingwith Jim McElroy for 17 yards and three plays later lofted a 23-yarderto Rodney Lee who made a spectacular diving grab at the USC 11. Onthe next play, Skip Hicks found the end zone on a burst up themiddle. The game was tied when Merten sent the extra pointthrough the uprights and 39 seconds showed on the clock.

USC had one last chance to win the game in regulation after a39-yard pass play and a pass interference penalty put the ball at theUCLA 23. But Adam Abrams’ 40-yard field goal attempt sailed intothe Bruin line and it was on to overtime for the first time in the 66-game series.

(21-point deficit in the second quarter) In what many havedeemed the greatest comeback in UCLA history, the Bruins ralliedfrom a 21-point second quarter deficit to best Bo Schembechler’s20th-ranked Wolverines, 31-27, in front of over 105,000 shockedMichigan fans who had seen their team lose at Notre Dame theweek before. Senior Tom Ramsey thrust himself into the nationalspotlight with a truly All-American performance, completing 22 of 36passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns in leading UCLA to its firstwin ever over the Wolverines.

Trailing 7-0 after one period, the 12th-ranked Bruins nearly sawthe game slip away early in the second quarter. Quarterback SteveSmith’s six-yard run gave Michigan a 14-0 lead and after theWolverines blocked a Bruin punt and took possession on the UCLAseven, Smith’s five-yard pass to Anthony Carter made the score 21-0 with 12:57 remaining in the second quarter.

However, on the next series, UCLA converted two key fourth-down plays to keep the drive alive. Facing a third-and-25 situationon the UM 46-yard line, Ramsey saw Dokie Williams streaking downthe sideline, hit him in stride at the three-yard line and the speedsterscored to give UCLA its first touchdown at the 4:34 mark of thesecond quarter to culminate an 80-yard drive.

After the Bruins stopped Michigan on its next series. Ramseypassed for a couple of first downs and then hit Jojo Townsell on aspectacular 25-yard pass play to set up a one-yard quarterbacksneak that narrowed the gap to 21-14 with 2:34 to play in the first half.Michigan ended the first half with a field goal to make the score 24-14 at the intermission.

An interception by Don Rogers on the second play of thesecond half gave the Bruins the ball on the Michigan 22-yard line fortheir first possession of the half. Ramsey connected on a six-yardtouchdown pass to Townsell to make it 24-21. Another Michiganfield goal pushed the UM advantage up to 27-21 with 4:32 remain-ing in the third quarter. Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 65yards and the Bruins took it in from there on a two-yard run by KevinNelson. John Lee’s conversion put the Bruins in the lead at 28-27 with2:50 to play in the third quarter.

Interceptions by Danny Lauter and Neal Dellocono helped stiflethe UM’s attempted rally. Lee followed up with a 26-yard field goalwith 11:46 to go in the contest. Neither team could put any additionalpoints on the board, but a fumbled pitch from Ramsey to fullbackFrank Cephous gave Michigan one last chance with 1:05 to play. UMtook over on its own 48-yard line and managed to squeeze 12 playsinto their final series, but could not score and the final gun soundedwith the Wolverines at the Bruin eight-yard line.
