The Bruins finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 26-8 and turned in a perfect 10-0 mark in Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) play . SLCC hosted the Region 18 Tournament as the No . 1 seed and swept Snow in the semifinals and North Idaho College in the finals (NIC) three sets to zero to qualify for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament in Casper, Wyo .

The Bruins swept their two opening round matches three sets to zero before meeting up with then nationally ranked No. 2 Tyler Junior College in the national semifinals. In a hard fought match, the two went back and forth heading to the decisive fifth and final set. Tyler eventually won the set 15-12, ending the Bruins shot at a national championship .

Coming into the 2014 season, Head Coach Sue Dulaney returns five players from last year’s fourth place national team with 10 newcomers . Leading the way is NJCAA First Team All-American and reigning Region 18 Player of the Year outside hitter Carol Grasso . In 130 sets played, Grasso totaled 500 kills and 417 digs on the defensive side. “She’s a total package kid,” said Dulaney about Grasso. “Her vision on the court is unbelievable and on the defensive side she knows exactly what to focus on to get the dig . This summer she has worked on her blocking as well.”

Middle hitter Sequoia Lofton, defensive specialist Allyssa Koki, and outside hitter Mariana Pilon all appeared in over 100 total sets last year as all three will be expected to bring that experience back this year . Lofton accounted for 120 kills as Pilon racked up 224 digs last year . Koki also added 182 digs . Rounding out the returners is Ital-ian setter Ailin Donati who in just 34 sets played totaled 276 assists . The Bruins also have added Westminster transfer Cassandra Fenton. As a setter for the Griffins, Fenton racked up 229 assists and 176 digs in 2013.

Dulaney added many key recruits many of whom will be expected to step in and produce right away most no-tably Washington state native Kallie Schmit . A middle/outside hitter out of Kalama High School in Kalama, WA, Schmit was named Dailey News Player of the Year and the Trico League Co-MVP her senior season .

Joining Schmit as incoming freshman is Utah All-State performers middle blocker Brighton Taylor out of Bounti-ful High School, outside hitter Sadie Pond from Herriman High School, and libero McKell Moss from Layton High School .

“We expect to host region again,” Dulaney said. “A 9-1 season compared to a 10-0 season can be the differ-ence between hosting or not . I want to prove it outright . I believe if we can come into a match optimistic and confident that will lead to wins. And I’m sure these sophomores don’t want their last home games to be the last conference game, they want it to be the Region 18 championship.”

Defeating many teams ranked in the top 10 of the NJCAA poll throughout the season including Western Nebraska Community College, Iowa Western Community College and the College of Southern Idaho, the Bruins closed out the 2013 season as the No. 7 ranked team in the final NJCAA poll .

The Bruins also had an excellent 2013 season academi-cally under Dulaney’s leadership as the NJCAA and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) named SLCC one of the All-Academic teams .

Dulaney had multiple players from last year’s team re-ceive awards for their outstanding play and helped three of her highly talented players move on to compete and study at four year institutions .
