    BACK TO OHIO

Aer collecng a 56-14 win at Akron Aug. 30, UCF

(1-0) makes another trip to the Buckeye State to face

No. 14 Ohio State (1-0) Saturday, Sept. 8, on ESPN2.

The Knights were receiving votes for the second-

straight week in both the USA Today(36th) and AP

    (39th) top 25 polls.

UCFs last game vs. a non-conference ranked

school was at No. 2 Texas in 2009. The Knights do not

have a win over a non-conference top-25 opponent.Their only win vs. a ranked team was at home vs.

No. 13/12 Houston in 2009. The UCF program dates

back to only 1979, and its first year at the FBS level

    was in 1996.

With Ohio Stadiums capacity listed at over

100,000, Saturdays contest could be the fourth me

in UCF history it will play a game in front of a crowd

of at least 100,000 (the record crowd to watch a UCF

game is 103,029 at Penn State in 2002).

Exact kickoffme is slated for 12:01 p.m., which

would be the earliest start for a UCF game since

the 2010 C-USA Championship Game vs. SMU (also

    12:01 p.m.).

    ON THE ROAD

UCFs victory at Akron was its first road win sincethe 2010 season (it was 6-1 that year including an

AutoZone Liberty Bowl win over Georgia).

If the Knights can grab a win at Ohio State, it will

be the first me since 2000 that they will claim two

road victories over non-conference opponents in the

same season (UCF first joined a conference in 2002

    with the MAC).

    GETTING THE BALL BACK

At Akron, the Knights recovered three fumbles and

notched an intercepon for four total turnovers.

UCF last forced four turnovers at Tulane Nov. 20,

    2010.

The Knights turned the ball over only once vs. the

Zips, which was an intercepon in the third quarter.

    A DISCIPLINED GROUP

In the opener at Akron, the Knights commied just

two penales for 16 yards. Dang back to 2011, they

have just three penales in their last two games.

Closing out the 2011 season, UCF had just one pen-

alty for five yards vs. UTEP.

    DOMINATING THE CLOCK

To kick off2012, UCF led Akron in me of posses-

sion by controlling the ball for at least 32 minutes.

Going back to the final five games of 2009, the

Knights have led in TOP in 27 of their last 32 contests.

    3/16The Ohio State Game - Sept. 8, 2012

    LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD

By scoring 56 points at Akron, UCF racked up its

most points against a non-conference FBS opponent

    since a 57-17 win over the Zips Nov. 3, 2001, a year

    before joining the MAC.

It also was the most points scored vs. a non-confer-

ence FBS school on the road dang back to a 64-30

triumph at Louisiana Tech to open the 1998 season.

LOOKING COMFORTABLE In his first-collegiate start, sophomore quarter-

back Blake Bortles seled in to the 2012 season

    quickly vs. the Zips.

Hailing from nearby Oviedo, Bortles was 13-for-16

for 168 yards and three touchdowns. It was the first

me since Kyle Israel vs. UTEP on Nov. 24, 2007, that

a UCF QB had three touchdown passes in a game.

Bortles already now has half the amount of touch-

down passes he had as a redshirt freshman in 2011.

That year he was voted onto the C-USA All-Fresh-

man Team and had a 153.88 efficiency rang, which

was good for third on the single-season chart.

    GOING TO THE AIR

With Blake Bortles having three touchdown pass-

es at Akron and Tyler Gabbert adding one himself,UCF amassed four total TD passes. The Knights had

not accomplished that feat since a win at Rice Oct.

    24, 2009.

Dang back to UCFs first year at the FBS level in

1996, the Knights have thrown at least four touch-

down passes in a game 16 mes (in 191 games).

Most total passing touchdowns since 1996:

    A REALLY GOOD SIGN

UCF did not have two touchdown passes in a game

last year unl the sixth contest of the season (SMU),

while no receiver had two TD recepons in a game.

In the 2012 opener, sophomore Rannell Hall

hauled in a pair of TD catches at Akron, becoming

the first Knight since Jamar Newsome at Memphis

Nov. 27, 2010, to do so.

Hall finished his career night with four recepons

and 94 yards. As a true freshman, he had four catch-

es for the enre 2011 season.

QBS LEAVING THEIR MARK...AS WIDE RECEIVERS

Converted quarterbacks Rob Calabrese and Jeff

Godfrey played their first games as wide receivers at

Akron and both contributed in big ways.

Calabrese was a starng quarterback from 2008-

10, missed the final eight games of 2010 due to an

injury, then suffered the same injury in the summer

of 2011 when he moved to WR. Finally healthy, Ca-

labrese pulled in a highlight-reel 12-yard TD pass

from Tyler Gabbert for his first-career recepon.

UCFs starng signal-caller from 2010-11, Godfrey

brought in two recepons for 13 yards, posted an

8-yard rush and also appeared on the kickoffreturn

    and kickoffcover units.

proceeded to elude the defense and heave the ball

toward the endzone. Doug Gabriel snatched the

ball from the air on the 4-yard line and sprinted in

to help take a 10-7 lead at the break. However, the

two of the Knights touchdowns, while Latavius Mur-

    had one.

    McCRAY TWINS START TOGETHER

Even though they are now juniors, twin brothers

Jordan McCray and Jusn McCray had yet to start a

game together on the offensive line. That changedat Akron when Jordan was the right guard and Jusn

    served as the right tackle.

In 2011, both Jordan and Jusn started one game

    each alongside older brother CliffMcCray.

    A NEW ATTITUDE

Junior Chris Marn moved over from le tackle to

ght end in the preseason, and immediately made

    his presence known at Akron.

The Fort Walton Beach nave caught a 5-yard

touchdown pass on the opening drive of the season

    for his first-career recepon.

    A LOT OF SCORING RETURNS

Entering 2012, the Knights had eight returning

student-athletes who boasted at least one rush-

ing touchdown as a Knight (Storm Johnson had one

It was the first season-opener since 2007 at NC

State (four) that UCF delivered at least three sacks.

the country, UCF held Akron to just 69 yards on 27carries Aug. 30.

In both 2010 and 2011, the Black and Gold kept

opponents under 100 rushing yards six mes, while

nine schools could not reach the century mark vs.

    the Knights in 2009.

respecve conference in rushing defense every yea

    from 2008-11.

    LINEBACKERS BOAST EXPERIENCE FROM 2011

The linebacker corps was once again a focal point in

the preseason, but the difference to start 2012 wa

that the starters already had much-needed exper

    ence to their credit.

Senior Jonathan Davis switched over from running

back in 2011 and ended up leading the Knights with

10.5 tackles for loss. Classmate Ray Shipman spen

his first full season as a LB last year aer he spent two

seasons on the Florida basketball team. Sophomores Troy Gray and Terrance Plummer com

bined for 10 starts as true freshmen, with Plumme

taking over as middle linebacker this year.

    LOOKING AT THE SECONDARY

Boasng 253-career tackles since his true-fresh

man season, senior free safety Kemal Ishmael is on

pace to enter UCFs top-10 for total tackles, asCor

    Hogue (2006-09) claims 10th with 279 tackles.

Ishmael has finished each season with at least 70

    tackles (70 in 2009, 93 in 2010 and a team-high 81

in 2011). He averages just over six tackles per game.

Sophomore strong safety Clayton Geathers was a

member of the 2011 C-USA All-Freshman Team, post

ing six break-ups and 67 tackles.

Over at the corners, Josh Robinson was selected inthe third round by the Minnesota Vikings, and UC

was looking to fill that spot. Senior cornerback A.J

Bouye started the first seven games as a junior be

fore an injury kept him on the bench. He had two

picks and three break-ups before the injury. Then

freshman Brandon Alexander stepped in and record

ed five break-ups and 43 tackles.

To begin 2012, sophomore Jordan Ozeries, who

was injured in 2011 aer being on the 2010 C-USA

All-Freshman Team, got the start at one CB spot a

Akron, and Bouye was in the starng lineup as wel

The duo combined for 11 tackles and two forced

    fumbles.

    THE BODIES UP FRONT

Junior defensive tackle Victor Gray moved over to

defensive end in the spring, and combined with se

nior Troy Davis on the other side, the duo has 13.0

    sacks in their careers.

In the opener at Akron, it was the reserve ends who

stepped up as Deion Green had three tackles and a

sack, and Cam Henderson boasted two tackles with

    a fumble recovery.

Up the middle, tackles E.J. Dunston and Jose Jose

started vs. the Zips, and Josh Wofford and Thoma

Niles also saw me at DT with Niles producing hi

    first-career sack.

PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF

Aer seven games in 2011, J.J. Worton had only 11

yards on five punt returns. In the final five contests,

he produced 139 yards on 12 returns.

To start 2012, Worton returned three punts at Ak-

    ron for 73 yards, highlighted by a career-long 50-yard

    return.

    THE KICKING GAME

UCF lost punter David Bohner and kicker Nick Cat-toi, so the preseason was a big test for the specialists.

Senior Jamie Boyle began boong punts at least 50

yards in the spring, and in his first game as the UCF

punter he averaged 40.4 yards on five punts includ-

ing a 53-yarder. He also placed two inside the 20.

Meanwhile, sophomores Sean Galvin, Shawn Mof-

fi and Rodrigo Quirarte were compeng for the

starng kicking dues, and Moffi was 7-for-7 in ex-

    tra points vs. the Zips.

    ONE OF THE BEST

From 2008-10, UCF finished the season ranked in

the top three in the country in kickoffreturns, includ-

ing first in 2010. In 2011, the Knights were at it again.

UCF was 113th aer week four, and 100th aer

week seven, but ulmately finished third last yearwith a 26.93 average.

    SPEEDY IN CHARGE

True freshman and All-C-USA First Team member

Rannell Hall averaged 31.0 yards on 23 kickoff re-

turns in 2011, with his first return coming in UCFs

sixth game of the year at SMU.

The Miami nave ranked fih naonally in kickoff

returns, as his 31.0 average ranked second in UCF

single-season history. Hall amassed at least 138 yards

in returns in four different games in 2011.

    OWNING THE CLASSROOM

Along with earning an all-me high 79 rang in the

NCAA Graduaon Success Rate earlier this year, the

Knights received the Conference USA Sport Academic

Award, as they boasted the highest team grade-point

average of all 12 C-USA football programs.

Eleven Knights (Rob Calabrese, Rey Cunha, Lyle Dan-

kenbring, Kevin Garvy, Billy Giovane, Theo Goins,

Brendan Kelly, Latavius Murray, Jordan Rae, Ray Ship-

man & Phil Smith) have already received their bach-

    elors degrees.

UCF ranks ed for third in the naon with Florida

State for having the most student-athletes who have

degrees. Virginia Tech is first with 15, while Pisburgh

    is second with 12.
