THE PANDY MAN CAN: Senior linebacker Anthony Pandy is back for his fifth year as a Wildcat and will be looking to assume a large leadership role under first year head coach Jedd Fisch. Pandy, who was one of Arizona’s representatives at Pac-12 Media Day, started all five games last season and has 13 career starts at linebacker. During the 2020 season, Pandy led the Wildcats in both tackles (30) and interceptions (2). Both of his interceptions came in the same game vs. Colorado. Pandy enters his fifth year with 130 tackles, 11.5 for a loss, 4.0 sacks and three interceptions.

MCCAULEY NAMED TO RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCH LIST: For the third time in his career, senior Josh McCauley was been named to Rimington Trophy Watchlist, which recognizes the top center in the country. The former walk-on has started all 27 games he has played in in the last three seasons and has anchored the Wildcats offensive line from the center position. Last season, he helped pave the way for big rushing games by Wildcat backs that included 268 yards vs. Colorado and 158 yards vs. USC. The Mesa, Ariz. native helped the Wildcats average 174 yards on the ground in 2019 and started all 12 games at center in 2018 when Arizona had the Pac-12's top rushing unit (202.4 ypg). Additionally, he was a key piece of the 2018 line that allowed the third-fewest sacks in the Pac-12.

HAVRISIK EARNS PRESEASON PAC-12 HONORS: Kicker Lucas Havrisik was named second-team Preseason All-Pac-12 heading into the season. Last year, Havrisik made six of seven field goals in five games, including a 51 yarder in the first game of the season. He made six-straight to end the season, with three coming vs. USC. The Riverside, Calif. native, known for his big leg, kicked 17 of his 21 kickoffs went for touchbacks. Havrisik finished the year ranked 16th in the nation with an 85.7% field goal percentage. The senior has a career long of 57 yards, which came during his freshman season in 2017.

Phil Steele. The Ypsilanti, Mich. native finished the season with a conference-high 142 tackles and added in 10.5 TFLs. His 142 tackles was the third-most in the country and was one of five players to post 130+ tackles and 10+ TFLs.

WILEY NAMED A PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Running back Michael Wiley was named a preseason candidate for the 2021 Doak Walker Award back in late July, which recognizes the nations' top college running back. Last season, Wiley emerged as a part of Arizona's rushing attack as he finished the season with 222 yards on just 31 carries while scoring three touchdowns. The Houston, Texas native doubled his rushing yards from his freshman season with the exact same amount of carries. Wiley had a career game against Colorado as he gained 122 yards on just seven carries to go with five receptions. He set career highs in rushing yards (122), longest rush (45) and catches (5) that night.

FIVE NAMED TO THE SENIOR BOWL WATCHLIST: Back in mid-August, Mo Diallo, Jalen Harris, Treshaun Hayward, Donovan Laie and Trevon Mason were named to the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watchlist. This group, as well as the rest of Arizona’s seniors, will look to become the first Wildcats since Nick Foles and Juron Criner to play in the Senior Bowl.

NO LONGER WALK-ONS: On the evening of Aug. 18, Arizona natives Viper Rourke Freeburg, CB Treydan Stukes and S Jaydin Young were all awarded scholarships during a team meeting. Last season, Freeburg started all five games for the Wildcats at outside linebacker and ranked fifth on the team in tackles and second in TFL. Stukes and Young came on strong during fall camp, making the decision easy by head coach Jedd Fisch to award them scholarships.

BRINGING BACK THE TIGHT END: It’s no secret that Jedd Fisch intends to use the tight end more often than the Wildcats have done so in the past few years. This year’s tight end room, which is led by coach Jordan Paopao, consists of Connor Hutchings, Stacey Marshall, Roberto Miranda, Colby Powers, Zach Williams and Bryce Wolma. Back in 2017, Wolma caught 28 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, but only has 10 catches for 131 yards and one score since then. Williams has caught three career passes for 34 yards. Look for this group of tight ends to make a big impact on Arizona’s pro style offense this season.

A HALL OF FAME PEDIGREE: Safety Isaiah Taylor enters his freshman season at Arizona with something in his back pocket that you don’t see very often… a pro football hall of famer for a father. Taylor, who is the son of 15-year pro and 2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Jason Taylor, won a state championship and was named All-State in the 7A division while playing at St. Thomas Aquinas. He holds his school record for the longest touchdown with a 103-yard interception return for a touchdown. Taylor impressed in the final scrimmage of fall camp as picked off a pass and made a few key plays throughout the night.

DR. BLITZ MAKES HIS WAY TO TUCSON: Of all the newcomers to the Arizona Football program, defensive coordinator Don Brown is near the top of the list when it comes to instant impact. Brown, long known for his aggressive and blitz-heavy attacks, has earned the nickname "Dr. Blitz". Widely considered one of the top defensive coaches in college football, Brown joined Arizona after five successful seasons leading the Michigan Wolverines defense. Brown, who brings nearly 45 years of coaching experience to Tucson, was a five-time nominee and a 2016 finalist for the Broyles Award that is annually awarded to the nation's top assistant coach. Over the last decade, 29 defensive players who played under Brown have been selected in the NFL Draft. After orchestrating a miraculous turnaround of the Boston College defense over the course of three seasons, Brown was tabbed as the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015.

WILDCATS IN THE NFL: As of the conclusion of preseason action, the Wildcats are once again well represented in the National Football League with nine former letterwinners active across the league. One of Arizona’s most prestigious alums, tight end Rob Gronkowski, returned from retirement in 2020 to rejoin his longtime quarterback Tom Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over 10 seasons in New England and Tampa Bay, Gronkowski has hauled in 8,484 yards and 86 touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Foles is in his 10th NFL season after rewriting the Wildcats record books during his time in Tucson. The most recent Wildcats to make the transition to the NFL are running back Gary Brightwell (New York Giants) and defensive end Roy Lopez (Houton Texans). For a complete list of former Wildcats in the NFL, see the comprehensive chart below.

INSPIRED BY THE PAST, BUILT FOR THE FUTURE: This season, the Wildcats will don a new set of uniforms that pay homage to the Desert Swarm days back in the early 90s.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Squally Canada scored on three short touchdown runs and Brigham Young spoiled Kevin Sumlin's Arizona coaching debut with a 28-23 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night.

BYU went 4-9 last year, but looked like a far better team in its 2018 opener. The Cougars were overpowering up front on offense and the defense limited Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate's effectiveness by not letting him get out and run.

Arizona had some good moments in the first half in its first game under Sumlin, but struggled on both sides of the ball in the third quarter as BYU built an 18-point lead.

Tate rallied Arizona in the fourth quarter. He scored on a 2-yard run and set up J.J. Taylor's 1-yard TD run with just over three minutes left, but Arizona trailed 28-23 after the 2-point conversion failed.

BYU never let the Wildcats get the ball back, grinding out a pair of first downs behind its powerful offensive line.

Tate threw for 197 yards and a TD on 17-of-34 passing, but was held to 14 yards rushing on eight carries.

Mangum battled injuries last season, throwing nine interceptions and eight touchdowns before going down with a season-ending Achilles' tendon injury. He was sharp against Arizona, throwing for 209 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-28 passing.

Mangum orchestrated a drive to set up Canada's first 1-yard TD run in the second quarter and opened the third with a 24-yard scoring pass to Matt Bushman that put BYU up 14-10.

The Cougars began blowing the Wildcats off the ball on their next quick-hitting drive, marching 58 yards for Canada's second 1-yard TD run. Canada's 2-yard run at the end of the third quarter put BYU up 28-10.

Defensively, BYU was effective at limiting Tate's running options, but he found ways to beat them with his arm in the first half.

Tate led Arizona on a late scoring drive in the first half — with help from BYU's two 15-yard penalties — and hit Tony Ellison on a 15-yard touchdown pass to put the Wildcats up 10-7.

Veteran NFL and college coach Jedd Fisch was hired as the head coach of Arizona Football on Dec. 23, 2020. Fisch comes to Arizona after eight years of coaching at the collegiate level, including stints in the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 and 13 years in the NFL, most recently with the New England Patriots. The 44-year-old Fisch has been a part of championship seasons throughout his career, including with the Los Angeles Rams as a member of head coach Sean McVay's staff as the Rams won the NFC championship and appeared in Super Bowl LIII. Fisch's coaching pedigree also includes working under future NFL Hall of Famers Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll, as well as college football Hall of Fame member Steve Spurrier and Michigan's Jim Harbaugh. Fisch has served on coaching staffs that reached five bowl games, highlighted by the 2016 Orange Bowl when he served as Michigan's passing game coordinator. His college coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Florida under Spurrier as the Gators advanced to the 2000 Citrus Bowl and the 2001 Sugar Bowl and won a SEC championship. A widely-respected offensive mind, Fisch has helped guide top offenses in the NFL with three of his offenses finishing in the Top 10 in total offense, including the top-ranked offense with the Denver Broncos and the second-ranked offense with the Rams. While offensive coordinator at UCLA in 2017, Fisch guided the Bruins' offense to a top-three ranking in the Pac-12 before leading the Bruins in their final regular season game and to the Cactus Bowl as the interim head coach. Fisch arrives in Tucson after spending the 2020 season as the quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots. Prior to his position with the Patriots, Fisch spent two seasons as a member of McVay's offensive staff with the Rams as they posted the top offense in the NFL in 2018 with quarterback Jared Goff making back-to-back Pro Bowls. Fisch's offense at Michigan produced the Big Ten's top scoring and red zone offenses, as tight end Jake Butt won the Mackey Award and consensus All-America honors in 2016. Butt was one of 10 offensive players for Michigan to receive All-Big Ten honors that season. Fisch's impact was instant on the Wolverine offense as Jake Rudock became only the second quarterback in school history at the time to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season. In his second and third seasons as a college coach, the University of Miami's offense flourished under Fisch's quarterback tutelage. Stephen Morris set a single-season record for total offense with 3,415 yards in 2012 after Jacory Harris set a single-season Miami record with an efficient 65.0% completion for the season. Fisch first coached in a full-time capacity in
