Science is a verb!

• You got a problem? YOU GOT A PROBLEM???? Then solve it, using the Scientific Method! It is a logical sequence of steps designed specifically to solve problems!

• “You got a problem, yo, I’ll solve it”– Vanilla Ice

Here is the problem…

Tangrams You are to arrange the 4 pieces to form a square.= (15 min)

Page 20: U1D1: Welcome to Chemistry. Welcome to Chemistry! Please… 1. Sit in any seat where there is a folder 2. Once you have found your seat, complete the book

WOW!!! A new discovery

• While exploring the recesses of an extinct volcano, scientists stumbled upon a new piece to the puzzle…

• Your job is to incorporate this new information into a new square!=(10 min)

Page 21: U1D1: Welcome to Chemistry. Welcome to Chemistry! Please… 1. Sit in any seat where there is a folder 2. Once you have found your seat, complete the book

So..

• How is this activity similar to “doing science?

Page 22: U1D1: Welcome to Chemistry. Welcome to Chemistry! Please… 1. Sit in any seat where there is a folder 2. Once you have found your seat, complete the book

Just think…• This would have been quite dull if I drew the

pieces on the board and you had to figure it out in your head….

• The beauty of chemistry is that although the concepts can be abstract, they can be tested in a laboratory!

• The beauty of science is that it is fluid. As new information is discovered, lines of thinking change and adapt. =

Page 23: U1D1: Welcome to Chemistry. Welcome to Chemistry! Please… 1. Sit in any seat where there is a folder 2. Once you have found your seat, complete the book

So now that you’ve done a little thinking…

• The activity today required no special safety procedures. That’s not true for many of the experiments that are performed in science class.

• Hence the topic of your first Laboratory: Safety in the Chemistry Classroom=

A TYPICAL LAB PERIOD

1) Pick up the new lab paper /have pre-lab out

2) Background for the lab, the procedures and any safety

4) You and your lab partner will work together to complete

the lab. * record any data in the provided data table (correct

precision/units)

Page 25: U1D1: Welcome to Chemistry. Welcome to Chemistry! Please… 1. Sit in any seat where there is a folder 2. Once you have found your seat, complete the book

5) Clean up the lab station thoroughly Chemical wastes will be disposed of as per teacher instruction. Make sure to completely clean up the bench top and dry it off.
