Celebrating our Uniqueness A message from the Head of School

I want to express my appreciation to the YorkCommunity during this time of transition andespecially to our Board of Directors and other keycommittees for their support and leadership duringthis last year. I’m excited to be part of The YorkSchool as we move forward after another successfulyear. The School has accomplished much these lasttwelve months, and our future looks brighter thanever. One of my priorities is to continue to develop and strengthen the foundations of the York community, while ensuring that we value andprotect what is here, and what we have built.I intend to do this by maintaining the vision of The York School, and supporting the school’smission and values while we move forward to newadventures. A significant aspect that will guaranteeour school’s continued success and future is thedevelopment and execution of a new Strategic Plan.

This plan will be achieved by articulating andenhancing the mission of the School to ensure an

educational experience that is rewarding, providesexceptional value, and exceeds the expectations ofour community. I can’t do this alone. We will onlyreach our goals through the combined efforts offaculty, staff, the Board, Alumni and you, our parentcommunity. This is an opportunity for all of ourconstituents to work together to help us develop amap and a blueprint for our future. I want to be part of York’s continued growth and celebrate withyou, our constituents, the sense of community anduniqueness of our co-educational environment.

A critical part of this plan means we will:• Equip our school and staff with appropriate

resources;• Improve communication with staff, students,

parents, our Alumni, the Board and the broadercommunity and,

• Always, always, celebrate our uniqueness andachievements as a Coeducational IB WorldSchool.

The York School Annual Report 05-06 • 1

At the end of the day, I want our constituents toknow that we are the finest IB school in Canadaand perhaps the world.

Lastly, I am excited to acknowledge the success ofour 2006 graduating class. What an accomplishment! Our Alumni are now York’s new ambassadors. It isthrough their efforts that we will be recognized for the exceptional preparation and values that ourcommunity has instilled in them.

We are Entering a New EraMessage from our Chair

We entered a new era with the retirement of The York School’s founder, Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots, and we welcome our new Head, Mr. EzioCrescenzi, the unanimous choice of the Board ofDirectors. Ezio is an award-winning principal whohas founded three co-educational secondary schools, brings a great deal of experience to the York School’sInternational Baccalaureate Programme, and hasdemonstrated a life-long committment to providingstudents with a superb co-educational experience.

The recruitment of a new Head is a key Boardfunction, and was accomplished by retaining aprofessional search consultant and creating a SearchCommittee. I want to express my sincere appreciationto Colleen Keenan from Janet Wright & Associates, and to the other members of the Search Committee:David Denison (Chair), Shon Barnett, MatthewBarry, Jennifer Elliott, Susan Paul, Laurence Payne(2002 Graduate), Catherine Smith and JoanneStewart. I also want to thank the faculty and studentsat York who met and spoke with Ezio and persuadedhim that “The York School is where he should be.”

We believe that it is critical to recruit and retainthe very best faculty and to compensate themappropriately. With this goal in mind, the Boardformed a Compensation Committee to review ourteachers’ salaries and benefits. Schools across theGTA have traditionally used a ten-step grid todetermine salaries and benefits. In our ongoingefforts to ensure that teachers’ salaries at York arecompetitive with those in the Toronto DistrictSchool Board and with other independent schools,we made the decision to add the eleventh step to thegrid for the 2006-2007 school year.

The summer of 2006-2007 also meant severalcapital improvements to The York School. DuringJuly, we replaced the forty-three year old chillercomponent of the school’s air conditioning systemwith a new unit which is twice as efficient and muchless costly to operate. We have also completelyredesigned the third floor Biology lab which isbrighter and more energy-efficient.

I also wish to mention the terrific job done by thePremises Committee. My appreciation goes out to our

Chair, Ian Madell, and the rest of the members of the committee. Thank you to Eric Bresler,Peter Cavanagh, Paula Dill, Zool Kassum, KevinKimsa, Catherine Smith, Annette Whiteley and Wil Verheyen.

It would be remiss of me not to mention JohnAnderson’s superb contribution to the school. Inaddition to his regular duties as Director of Facilities,John oversaw the construction of the new gym, andall of the renovations to the North Campus. Due tohis diligence, John typically delivered on time, and onor under budget. The Board and The York Schoolwish John well as he leaves us to enjoy retirement.

I’ve saved the best news for last! Congratulationsto our 2006 graduating class. Our students have goneoff to the next phase of their education and arestudying at top tier universities both in Canada andthe United States.

Preparing for the Future: Our Students Celebrate

IB Education Prepares for UniversityOn my first day of classes atUniversity of Toronto, I walked,or rather got sucked intoConvocation Hall, along with1300 other first-year studentsrushing savagely to find a seat.It was at this very moment, that

I feared I might have made a bigger step from Yorkthan I might be able to handle. This hesitation on mypart was no sooner banished from my mind, when Iwas handed the syllabus for the course; it containedworks that were mandatory reading for many of myIB courses at The York School. I was further reassuredwhen topics like iambic pentameter, co-dominantinheritance, and Marxist theory were discussed and Ihad (perhaps my first) “happy” flashback to IB exams.I have just recently been assigned a first paper for mypolitical science course, and I was somewhat baffledduring the tutorial that at this level the term “thesisstatement” required some extensive explanation. In theshort time I have been in university, I can already seehow IB has prepared me and I have a much greaterappreciation for the intensity of the program.DEV RA D’U R ZO, York School Graduate 2006

IB Education Gives Confidence to succeedMy time at The York Schoolprovided critical academicfundamentals and also theopportunity for personaldevelopment. I was taught the skills needed to succeed at school. Beyond the school

walls, I was given approaches that taught me keyorganizational skills and leadership abilities. As astudent participating in all three IB programs,I found the York School to be a tightly-knitcommunity of students, teachers and staff. There was always an emphasis on maintaining a balance of extra-curricular activities and academia, whichenabled me to develop my potential, and left me awealth of lasting experiences and life values.Guidance and encouragement were the necessaryingredients given to me that helped to develop areasof personal interest, and pushed my own boundariesas a student. Just as important, was the way I wastreated as an individual, which allowed me to grow and evolve into an independent adult. I now have the tools to succeed in post-secondaryeducation and in life, and as a result, I amapproaching my time at university with a greaterconfidence to succeed.ANDREW BASKERVILLE, York School Graduate 2006

A Message from The York School Parent’s Guild

The York School Parent’s Guild supports the schoolin two major ways; we do it with friends and withfunds. Last year, the funds generated by the Parent’sGuild were provided by two campaigns: a MagazineSale and an extremely popular Cookbook Sale (a sell-out!). Proceeds from these events purchased acamera for the school, entertainment for the ClosingPicnic, refreshments for a myriad of assemblies,Arts Nights, sports days, the Guild Cup CrossCountry Event, Badminton Night, Cabaret Night, and the CAIS U13 Basketball Tournament. Ourfundraising also supplied prizes for the Ooch-a-thon, the Debating Event, and the trip to India, sponsored both the Upper School and Lower Schoolyearbooks and the Grade 12’s Graduation Party.

Many of the books on the shelves in our librariesare a result of the Guild’s much-anticipated AnnualLiterary Night held at Indigo Books. Our parentslove to shop and, as a result, the school receives acredit at Indigo. Last year, thanks to the wonderfulefforts of our previous co-chairs, Heather Conollyand Karen Weinstein, the Guild was able to

contribute towards the Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots,Scholarship and the portrait of the York School’sformer Head.

For families here at The York School, volunteerism, participation, and supporting the mission of theschool are the reasons for The Parent’s Guild. Thislast year, we had a wonderful turnout of both parentsand students for each and every one of our schoolactivities and events. The one goal all our eventshave in common is the enthusiastic involvement ofour parents. Manning popcorn and candy flossmachines, serving coffee, lacing up skates, sewingcostumes, billeting visiting athletic teams; the listgoes on and on. The York School is an involved and caring community.

A Statement that Speaks to AccountabilityFinance Committee Report

The fiscal year 2005-2006, marked one moremilestone in the life of The York School with ourauditors giving The School a clean bill of health. For the third year in a row, The York Schoolgenerated over $10 million in combined tuition fees, ancillary services and donations.

Revenue of $11.4 million exceeded expenses of$11.1 million, resulting in an accounting surplus of$230,000. This compares with an accounting surplusof $333,000 in the previous year.

January 2005, the Board approved a break-evenbudget for the 2005-2006 fiscal years. When comparedto the budget, our revenues experienced gains in allareas including tuition fees, interest income, donationsand ancillary services.

In the major areas of Teaching Salaries andBenefits, Plant Maintenance, Administration,Development, Scholarships and Bursaries, all areascontributed to material net savings during the yearagainst the approved budget.

This combination of cost savings and revenueincreases during 2005-2006, allowed funding for thefinal completion of the parking garage, the main-tenance of our computer facilities, the replacement of our old “chiller,” and to the refurbishment of a

number of offices. This surplus permitted the schoolto accelerate the number of mortgage payments at1320 Yonge Street, creating a significant saving thatcan be put toward other expenses.

An overall analysis of The York School financesshows a significant improvement to our net assetposition, allowing us to prudently pay down any debt load, while striving to retain the finest teachersand staff, and providing an outstanding educationalinstitution within the confines of proper cashmanagement.

I would like to offer my personal thanks toAnnette Whiteley, Christine Appadurai and RobynSmith, who continue to exceed our expectations each year in keeping us on a sound financial course.

A copy of the complete audited financialstatements of The York School may be obtainedfrom the school’s Finance Office.

Experientia docet – Experience teachesAfter forty years of educating children in a co-educational setting,

we know they learn best when their learning is founded on authentic

experiences. Through inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and

letting natural curiosity lead them, the International Baccalaureate

Programme gives students an outstanding advantage. Here, at

The York School, we enable our students to succeed well beyond

their expectations. We guide them through deep learning

experiences on their journey to the university of their choosing.
