Andrew Johnson• 17th President

• 1st to take over after an assassination

• poor & uneducated

• ran away as a child

• $10 reward offer

• From Tennessee and viewed as traitor and beaten at on his way to the inauguration.

Tenure of Office Act

• Congress hated Johnson and wanted to limit his power any way they could.

• Act stated that the President could not remove a person from federal office without approval of the Senate.

• Johnson fires Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War, without the Senate’s approval.

• This is an impeachable offense.

• House of Reps. brings up charges.

• Senate runs trial.

• Impeachment is just bringing the official to trial NOT kicking him out of office.

• In violation of Tenure of Office Act.

• Chief Justice Salmon Chase heard the case.

• Senator Ross of Kansas was the last to vote. His vote of no kept Johnson President by 1 vote. (35 to 19; 2 to 1 needed to remove)

• Lied under oath about extra marital affair with Monica Lewinsky.
