It can seem like Tyn-y-nant has its own Time.

Whether that’s true or not, we strive to

make time for reflective learning. We give

students the opportunity to give thoughtful

consideration to their own learning and experience.

We encourage them to assess and understand

their strengths and limitations in order to support

their learning and personal development.

Sustainable development education is an

ideal vehicle for interdisciplinary learning.

Tyn-y-nant is a great setting in which

to develop this:

of people and nature.

importance of universal rights and that our actions

may have implications for future generations.

Page 13: Tynynant Education Centre

Education is a way of life.

We all know that concrete facts are

necessary but, by themselves are not enough

- a rounded knowledge of the sciences and

ecology is also needed.

We are ideally placed to build the

students’ faith in the efficacy of joint

efforts and collective action to

solve formidable global problems;

at least they’ll need to create the

electricity to light or pump the water

to the shelter they build!

a sense of purpose

So much more...

Though we often wonderwhy God does what Hedoes,we can be sure He does it on better information.

In 1945 a Sunday School teacher

called Bill Buckley had an idea:

take young people away from

their normal environment,

enable teachers to get alongside

them with the thought that they

would learn more and the

learning would stay with them.

And the young people would have

a great time!

Since 1945, through our charity,

thousands of young people

have learnt more: about themselves,

others, the natural environment

and God.

In 1963 we purchased Tyn-y-nant,

a 10 acre smallholding with a typical

Welsh stone cottage with a lean-to

‘beudy’ or barn. The cottage is still

here but the barn is now a self-

contained ‘apartment’.

Over the last few years we have

invested over £1.2 million in very

high quality kitchens and four

remarkable 23-bed chalets.

So, we have had a long time

to develop the purpose of this

wonderful place.

The core value of the Trust is:

enabling as many people as

possible to experience God.

We believe in encouraging

education for sustainable

development whilst ensuring

students have the freedom to be

creative, to have some independence,

time for reflective learning and

team working; all in a safe, caring

Christian place.

At a people level; to achieve this we

decided that our staff would really be

experts in their fields.

This makes it much easier to get

alongside the students and for us

to be so much more ...

a sense of place

Winston Churchill

‘ ,

The Tyn-y-nant Christian Education Centre

Our team that went to dozens of ‘unsuitable’

sites back in 1963 would be extremely pleased

with the use that has been made of the one

that seemed ‘just right’.

Ty’n-y-nant, the house-by-the-stream, is a special place.

Their inspection report included: ‘they enjoyed the

early rhododendrons and the salty breeze from

the beach as they noted the seclusion of the site,

bounded by high embankments on two sides,

a stone wall on the third and a wood on the fourth,

in front of which a stream flowed.’

There were also two flat fields and even a

200 year old spring.

This is the place.

The area is outstanding; from the mountain

landscape of Snowdonia to the Llyn Peninsula

and its superb beaches with a £8 million

international sailing academy now being built

5km away at Pwllheli - just a walk along the beach!
