Their police badges might not bereal but there is nothing fakeabout the firearms that arewaved around by a band of rob-bers impersonating police offi-cials.

In September last year Tyger-Burger reported on two separate in-cidents where a gang – robbersdressed as policemen – targeted twohomes in Parklands.

In one instance a group of sevenmen pretended to be police mem-bers executing a drug raid, in an-

other incident three men gained ac-cess to a residence under the samepretences.

On Saturday 11 February, fourrobbers with a similar modus oper-andi targeted another couple inParklands.

The man and woman were intheir duplex in the Ashwood MewsPark in Parklands Main Road whenthey heard a knock on the door.

“When the man checked the doorhe found three men dressed in civil-ian clothes with police bulletproofjackets on.

Still hoping for a daycare centreLEON STEENKAMP

Outside Thozama Qobongwana’syard three toddlers are horsingaround on a discarded car seat. One of the boys is playfully try-ing to figure out what the oldhardhat in his hand is used for.His little feet kick up a fine puffof dust as he jigs out a little shuf-fle to the amusement of his twofriends.

Like all other children their agethese three are bursting with ener-gy and are overly curious.

Curiosity in Skandaalkamp, oneof the five informal settlements sit-uated around the Vissershok land-fill site, can however be fatal.

The three boys are among the 50odd pre-school children in the set-tlement who would benefit greatlyif there were a local care centre inplace.

The 42-year-old Qobongwanaused to look after many of the chil-dren here before she took a job ata brick making company to helpsupport her two children andgrandchild.

“The children keep milling

around here, we don’t have oneplace where we can keep them,” shesays.

“I heard the other day, that someof the children (aged between twoand three years old) were found atthe big road.

“There are trucks that drivethere,” Qobongwana said referringto the Frankdale Road located some300m away.

“I can’t open a creche because thegovernment didn’t want that againafter that fire, I think it was in Mfu-leni, where seven children died.

“I have to wait until I can get alegal place,” Qobongwana saidstanding outside her humble homewith her granddaughter on her hip.

Having stayed in Skandaalkampfor the last 27 years, Qobongwana isconsidered one of the local commu-nity leaders.

Nikki Pretorius of the ACVV Koe-berg hopes to establish an EarlyChildhood Development (ECD) cen-tre and clinic facility in the area .

She says Qobongwana’s knowl-edge of the people and her caringway with children makes her anideal candidate for training in ECD.

“These children have no day care

facilities and clinic access is limit-ed,” Pretorius says.

“The lack of a building that canaccommodate the clinic personnelwho visit the area on a daily basismeans there is not privacy for pa-tients.

Pretorius says the current childlaws have created a catch 22 situa-tion for these people.

According to Pretorius the Chil-dren’sAct and thepolicies of theDe-partment of Social Development(who regulate compliance of theChildren’s Act) do not allow the reg-istration of any “partial care facili-ty” or “early childhood develop-ment” centre when it comes to in-formal settlements, particularlyone with such poor facilities asSkandaalkamp. The reasons forthis include zoning regulations anda lack of facilities.

Someone like Qobongwana canhowever register for partial careprogrammes, which include pro-grammes run by home-based play-groups.

“The challenge here is two-fold.People like Thozama do not havethe resources to establish such pro-grammes and they cannot afford toremain without an income in orderto provide day care to parents whocannot afford to pay for such a serv-ice,” Pretorius explained.

Efforts to have these children at-tend an educare facility in Melk-bosstrand are also out of the ques-tion.

“The registration specificationsrequire the facility to be within areasonable distance of the commu-nity it serves – to enable parents tobring their children to the school.

“For us to transport the children, there are several requirements thatare well beyond our financialmeans, such as: buses, a secondadult to supervise the children dur-ing transportation and one car seatper child to ensure the children aretransported safely,” Pretorius said.

There are about 276 houses in thecamp with an estimated 800 peopleliving there.

There are a further 15 houses inthe Rooidakkies camp.

Thozama Qobongwana and her daugther Lisakhanya (one year old). Qobongwana would love to open a daycare centre at her home in Skandaalkampbut child care regulations will not allow it. Photos: Leon Steenkamp

Young children like these are left to entertain themselves on the dirt roadsof Skandaalkamp and other surrounding informal settlements. The establishment of a daycare centre and clinic could help with early education and theirhygiene needs.

Nikki Pretorius hopes this abandoned factory down the road from Skandaalkamp could be turned into a daycare centre and community hall for the residents of the neighbouring informal settlements.

The lecture will be presented byDr Christian Hettlage and is titled“From Stars to Surface: Survey-

ing South Africa”.The talk will outline the history

Resident says ‘bringlife to our beachfront’

LEON STEENKAMP

Inspired by a recent visit toDurban, a local resident hasproposed a couple of ideas thatcould turn the Table Viewbeachfront from drab anddreary, to exciting and inviting.

Agi Orfanos from West Beachwas so inspired by the efforts ofDurban’s eThekwini municipalitythat he compiled some artistic im-pressions of what the Marine Cir-cle area in Table View could looklike.

“The Blouberg beachfront is sit-uated on one of the world’s great-est vistas. The panoramic viewover the bay towards the majesticTable Mountain is unsurpassed al-most anywhere around the world. However this is where it all ends,”Orfanos says.

The City of Cape Town is busywith upgrades along the beach-front, but many will argue this isonly maintenance work that islong overdue.

Repair work on the woodenfencing, brickwork and woodenwalkway from the parking area tothe beach is currently receivingattention.

Orfanos believes the councilcould take a page from their Dur-ban counterparts who have active-ly upgraded the beachfront thereto promote the tourism industry.

It is the stretch of PorterfieldRoad bordered by most of the res-

taurants and clubs in Marine Cir-cle that he feels could do withsome serious beautification.

“This stretch of Porterfield isvery wide, if you take the parkingareas either side into considera-tion, it is almost 60m. If one couldupgrade this area with little court-yards with flower boxes, a centreisland with palm trees it will be alot more coffee shop and pedestri-an friendly. At this stage we don’thave a central node in Blouberg toattract tourists – where they canrelax after they have been to thebeach or before going there,” sug-gests Orfanos.

To bring this idea to life, Or-fanos digitally superimposed pho-tos that he took at Umhlanga onphotos of the existing stretch ofPorterfield Road.

“Over the years I have ap-proached the city council withmany ideas but the answer is al-ways the same, there isn’t money.

“I hope these pictures couldspark public debate about whatcould be done to make our beach-front more tourist-friendly,” heexplains.

Making the Marine Circle moreaccessible to pedestrians throughadded bricked footpaths and a cen-tre island could also serve as atraffic calming measure for latenight revellers.

Other ideas include an elevatedbricked walkway along the TableView beachfront.

“Currently you have to walk be-

hind the cars that are parked inthe parking areas. If one had an el-evated walkway between thedunes and the parking area, itwould be much safer and offer abetter view of the beach and TableMountain,” Orfanos said.

It seems Durban also tackled theissue of dune rehabilitation withmore success.

“They have steel fencing to keeppeople off the dunes. The sign-boards warn people to stay off thedunes and are also much lowerand less intrusive – not these mas-sive boards that spoil the view andget blown off in the wind.”

New development

Local ward councillor, MarissaJansenvanVuuren, saidupgradesto the beachfronts of both TableView, Blouberg and Melk-bosstrand will be receiving atten-tion.

“I am in the process of submit-ting a proposal to the subcounciland the city.

“I will be meeting with the may-or about the proposed new devel-opment along the N7 which willsee Bloubergstrand and Melkbosbeing upgraded,” Jansen van Vu-uren said in reference to the Wes-Cape development which is aimedat linking Table View and Atlantisalong the N7.

Van Vuuren said she is hopingto have a final draft of the proposalbefore 27 March. Pics on page 4.

Landfill gas can be used as cheap fuelLEON STEENKAMP

Plans to possibly utilise the Vissershoklandfill site to generate an alternative en-ergy source are currently being investi-gated by the city.

“The City of Cape Town has completed thefirst stage of feasibility studies to extractlandfill gas (which contains a large propor-tion of methane) in order to reduce the city’scarbon footprint due to landfill operations,”said the city’s Rustim Keraan.

Methane – a colourless, odourless and non-toxic but harmful greenhouse gas which isflammable and explosive under certain con-ditions – is one of the by-products producedby the anaerobic conditions that are preva-lent at landfill sites.

This gas can be converted to useful energy, such as electricity, and is a renewable re-source.

Keraan says the final stage of the feasibilityand viability assessment to decide how themethane will be used, is currently under way.

“The aim will be to put the gas to use in aneconomic activity to cover the costs of invest-ment for the infrastructure,” he explained.

In March last year the city completed anevaluation of the waste management servicesthat would be necessary to fulfil obligations

of the new National Environmental Man-agement Waste Act and concurrent legisla-tion and policies affecting climate change.

The recommendations adopted by coun-cil included appointing transaction advi-sors.

These advisors will evaluate the feasibili-ty of public-private partnerships necessaryto put in place the additional infrastructurethat will be required to minimise the effectsof waste on health and the environment.

“The tender for these transaction advi-sors who will evaluate these partnershipsfor waste minimisation that include thelandfill gas projects will be evaluated afterthe tender closes in February,” Keraansaid.

He said these consultants will advise onthe potential projects and together withstaff from the utility services directorate, make recommendations to the city councilon possible partnerships and the invest-ment requirements.

This process will be followed by an addi-tional tender in line with the findings andrecommendations.

Several regional Landfill Interest Groups(LIG) that fall under the auspices of the In-stitute of Waste Management of SouthernAfrica (IWMSA), enthusiastically support, educate, andencourageprogress in the field

of landfill management and extraction method-ologies.

The IWMSA is a professional, multi-discipli-nary, non-profit organisation with voluntarymembership established to promote the sci-ence and practice of waste management.

“Ultimately, we have to take responsibilityfor finding effective ways to manage and de-stroy the large volumes of methane being con-tinuously emitted to the atmosphere, and whatbetter way to do this than to convert it intoclean energy, such as electricity,” said IWMSApresident Stan Jewaskiewitz.

As waste in landfills decomposes, differentgases are produced in varying proportions.Landfill gas comprises about 50 percent meth-ane, 40 percent carbon dioxide, small quanti-

ties of oxygen and nitrogen, and over 100 oth-er gases, including carbon monoxide and hy-drogen sulphide.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that isa key contributor to global climate change(over 21 times more potent than carbon diox-ide). In addition, typical landfill gas, if per-mitted to accumulate in low lying or enclosedor confined spaces (such as buildings andhouses next to a landfill), may produce an at-mosphere that is both explosive and hazard-ous to life.

“Landfill gas can be readily extracted froma landfill, provided that proper engineeringof the extraction and management system iscarried out, and the landfill is under controland well managed,” Jewaskiewitz explained.

Hope for better MDRTB kids’ remedyPainful injections, a battery ofpills that are bad-tasting, too bigto swallow and with severe side-effects, as well as a stay in hospi-tal for at least six months, maysoon be a thing of the past forchildren suffering from multid-rug-resistant tuberculosis(MDR-TB).

Researchers working at Tyger-berg Children’s Hospital couldmake a breakthrough in the waythey treat these children with afive-year study that has just beenstarted.

Researchers from Stellenbosch

University’s Desmond Tutu TBCentre, situated at Tygerburg Hos-pital, are hoping that new studieswill ultimately improve treatmentfor the increasing number of chil-dren in the Western Cape that havecontracted MDR-TB.

“We’re looking at the side-effectsof the cocktail of drugs childrenneed to take, what dose we shouldbe giving them and the interactionbetween antiretrovirals and TB,”says Professor Simon Schaaf, whois leading the study.

About nine percent of childrenwho display TB symptoms, haveMDR-TB, a virulent form of tuber-

culosis that is difficult and expen-sive to treat.

Schaaf says as long as there’s ded-icated treatment, the prognosis fora cure for MDR-TB is better for chil-dren than for adults.

But the drugs are not child-friendly and can have side-effectsranging from severe nausea to lossof hearing. Over 20 percent of chil-dren on MDR-TB treatment becomedeaf or are left with some loss ofhearing.

“We need to tailor the treatmentto children. We know the right dosefor adults to get to the right bloodlevels to be cured of MDR-TB. But

what dose do you give a two-year-old?

“We’re looking at different chil-dren on a different combination ofdrugs. How can we make thesedrugs safer for children? These arethe things we’re looking at,” saysSchaaf.

Director of Paediatric Researchat the Desmond Tutu TB Centre,Anneke Hesseling, says the currentdrugs are not designed for children,as they are far too big, difficult toswallow and taste terrible. It’s alsohard to break them up to get the ex-act dosage.

“These drugs have been around

for ages. For MDR-TB, we’ve beenusing the same drugs for decades,”says Hesseling.

Mothers like Nobuntu Mahlat-shana from Crossroads would begrateful for shorter and better treat-ment. Her four-year-old daughter,Siyamthanda, has been on treat-ment for MDR-TB for 15 months.

“She had to take five or six differ-ent kinds of pills, which I crushedevery day and mixed with joghurt. She used to vomit a lot when shetook them. Now that she’s well, she’s stopped the pills, but sherefuses to have that kind of jo-ghurt!”

Controlled burn alertControlled burn alertAn ecological controlled burn ofthe Milnerton Race Course sec-tion of the Table Bay Nature Re-serve is planned to take place dur-ing March to ensure regenerationof the indigenous vegetation inthe area.

The City of Cape Town managesmore than 30 nature reserves andnatural areas. Some of these re-serves require the proliferation of anatural fire regime, without whichthe unique and irreplaceable indige-nous vegetation would not be able toregenerate.

The Milnerton Race Course sec-tion is comprised of Cape Flats sandfynbos which must burn, on aver-age, every 12 to 15 years.

The small 3,5 hectare northernblock at Milnerton Race Course willbe burned under controlled condi-tions on either 7, 14, or 28 March –between Sandown Crescent, TheMet, Stable Yard and the Gold CircleRace Track in Royal Ascot.

The burn will be conducted interms of a permit for controlled

burning from the City of CapeTown’s fire services and the air pol-lution control department. Environ-mental resource management de-partment staff will ensure that theprocedure will be conducted effi-ciently and safely.

The burning will take place on asuitable weekday and will be com-pleted within the course of one day.Neighbouring residents and landowners will be notified of the exactdate of burning by a letter drop intheir mailboxes.

For safety reasons, surroundingresidents are advised to keep theirwindows shut while burning takesplace. Flammable items such gascanisters should be removed fromoutside areas and laundry should betaken off washing-lines to preventodour contamination from smoke.Sprinklers may be used to dampengardens as a further precautionarymeasure.

The burn will allow for the regen-eration of the fynbos and the remov-al of the high accumulated plant fuelload (dry combustible materials) in

the nature reserve.Fire renders long dormant fynbos

seeds more susceptible to germina-tion by weakening the seed cover-ings through the effect of the smokeand heat of a fire. The winter rainsthat will follow will support the es-tablishment of the new plants, andultimately allow them to set newseed.

In 2008 and 2010, portions of thelarger 15 hectare southern area werevery successfully burned and nu-merous fynbos plant species havesince started to emerge.

The city’s vision for the Table BayNature Reserve is that it would be-come an internationally recognisa-ble natural feature in Cape Town. The regeneration of fynbos is crucialto the preservation of a healthy eco-system with a high diversity of in-digenous plant and animal species.

For any queries or objections con-tact air pollution control on021 590 1419. For further enquiriescontact Koos Retief, area manager:Milnerton area of the Table Bay Na-ture Reserve on 021 550 1086.

Social benefitsrecount overdueThe South African Social Agency (Sassa)has started a process of re-registering 15.3million people countrywide who receivesocial grant benefits.

Of this number of existing beneficiaries,10,3 million are children.

The re-registration is done to fight fraudand corruption and to ensure social grantsare paid to the right people.

The Western Cape has been identified asone of the hotspots in the country, wherepeople receive grants fraudulently.

This process is one in which beneficiar-ies’ identification will be verified and fol-lows concerns raised by the auditor gener-al over the years.

Sassa is developing a new payment mod-el to be supported by effective administra-tion and management systems and will en-able it to directly pay the correct socialgrant to the right person.

Roughly this means an estimate of 65 000people will have to be re-registered per daycountrywide to complete this process bythe end of the year.

Re-registration will be handled at bene-ficiaries’ local pay points.

Hopefully this will stop many unauthor-ised people receiving grants.

This is a very necessary and commenda-ble process, yet we are not convinced thatthis is feasible by the end of this year.

However, if this could be reached by thecut-off date (or even if it has to be extendedwith a couple of months) it is a big step for-ward in the fight against corruption.

Establish partnershipsYour front page article of 15 February (“Trol-ley folk headache”) refers.

I don’t think the vagrants enjoy being va-grants, and pushing a trolley around the sub-urbs to collect our leftovers isn’t exactly easywork. At least they’re not breaking intohouses or assisting syndicates, according toColonel Vosloo, station commander of TableView Police Station; and it reflects a willing-ness to work. Commercialisation tends todrive out and limit small-time locals’ ability

to look after themselves in favour of big busi-ness and contracts, unless partnerships areestablished.

Why not rather facilitate, regulate andmanage their initiative in a way that makesus more comfortable with them? The taxi in-dustry is a point in case. We will never bewithout the poor, and people will do whatthey need to do to survive.

ERIC DEACONWest Beach

Thank youfor prayersThe evening of 19 January will probablybe etched in my memory for quite sometime. My husband Peter was away onnight duty.

My brother in law, Matt, was workingon the laptop in the spare room, I was onthe veranda reading and watching TV,when three men armed with guns sudden-ly and silently appeared.

They put the gun against my arm, tookme to Matt’s room; all the while threaten-ing us to be quiet and look down or theywould kill us.

They wanted to know where the safe, guns, jewellery and money was or theywould shoot us.

We were not to look up or they wouldshoot us. It felt like an eternity before theyleft after binding our feet and wrists.

Matt managed to bite through his tape, then mine. We went to our neighbourswhocalled thepolice. Theyarrivedalmostimmediately and were wonderfully car-ing and professional doing all that is nec-essary at a crime scene.

Nick van Rooyen, a volunteer counsel-lor, got hold of my husband and I’ll alwaysbe grateful for his calm, sincere mannertelling me what may happen emotionally, etc. and to expect it. I have been blessedby the support of the folk in the complex.

I thank God for His keeping powerthroughout andHismercyandprotection.A big thank you to for the prayers fromour “family” of the Fathers House.

Employ vagrants tosort recyclablesI read the article “Trolley folk headache”(TygerBurger 15 February) with interest.

I too am frustrated by this brigade leavingour suburb littered with the fruits of theirlabour and the risks posed to their health indoing so too. They not only remove selecteditems but also look for and eat food that maybe dangerously contaminated. Bins are notsanitary and should they become seriouslyill through this practice, the bin owners aremost likely to be held accountable.

Complexes along Gie Road often leave binsout a day or two before the dirt trucks arriveand the filth littering the street is quite de-grading to say the least. Yet another over-looked hazard is that these poor souls fre-quently push overloaded trolleys obliviouslyalong busy roads, posing great risk to them-selves and motorists alike.

Firstly, the trolleys used to collect rubbishfrom bins are stolen property – theft is nota constitutional right – it’s actually againstthe law upheld by the constitution. Theft asblatant as this appears to be unseen by policeand other law enforcement agencies. Proper-ties where rummaging takes place consti-tutes trespassing and disturbance to the

peace caused, inter alia, by agitated dogs, onprivate property as well as other potentialtemptations.

Secondly, the owners of the stolen proper-ty (Shoprite, P n P, Makro, Woolworths, etc.)are responsible to accept their propertyback. I note on the push bars on most of thetrolleys, it states that the property is stolenif removed from the grounds and indicatesa return address. Why do this if they do notwant it back? Some companies endorsemany “green” projects, but seem to be indif-ferent about where their misplaced trolleysfinally end up.

So yes, given the above, they should beobliged to take their property back and dis-pose of it appropriately. Lastly, the costs ofproducing the stolen property is certainlynot a trivial matter and why must shoppersand residents (that is the ratepayers) bearthe brunt of this “headache”?

How about getting some of the vagrantsemployed by the recycling companies to sortthe rubbish which they are already quitegood at doing.

BruceEmail

Vagrants don’tpay for trolleysWhat? No way to stop the vagrants unlessthey are suspected of a crime?

They are thieves! They have stolen thetrolley or they are in possession of stolengoods: the trolley. Let the police arrestthem for that.

Let’s see how eager the vagrants will bethen tomessupour streetswithno trolley.

Then let the government do their joband get the vagrants rehabilitated andworking.

By the way this a countrywide problem.ALAN BUTLERGoodwood

Local residents have in the past had to con-tendwith the fluffy seeds of this invasive spe-cies blowing onto their properties and caus-ing a great nuisance.

Twenty staff members from the local com-munity have been hired to clear the bulrush-es from 1 February. The project is due forcompletion at the end of June.

This project forms part of the mayor’s riv-er-cleaning programme launched in memo-ry of the late Professor Kader Asmal.

Although bulrush is an important indige-nous wetland species, it has the potential to

become invasive, especially in nutrient-richwaters. Where bulrush invades a waterbody, it out-competes other plant species forlight, water and food. It also diminishes wa-ter surface areas for recreational activitiesand impacts on the functioning of the ecosys-tems that it invades.

“These negative impacts led the city to em-bark on a project to control bulrush in someof thewaterbodieswhere it hasbecome inva-sive,” said Bongani Mnisi of the city’s biodi-versity management branch.

“In order to ensure proactive and contin-ued future control and management of thespecies, data will be collected during theproject phase to formulate an operationalmanagement plan,” Mnisi said.

The city manages over 30 nature reservesand natural areas, and is also involved inconservation planning and invasive speciesmanagement.

‘Almal wil trou, begrafnisliedjie skryf’LOUISA STEYL

Hy vertel van sy boodskap virdie wat agtergelaat is: “Bringblomme vir my terwyl ek leef, moenie by ’n graf kom staan enhuil nie.”

Dillon Lerm

Cape Town locals, P.H.Fat, have chosen anunusual route for the release of their newalbum.

Following the success of their debut album,Dinosaur Blood, earlier in February, on ac-claimed US label Muti Music, the bandhas decided to break the traditionalmould of a record label financed release;and have launched their five-track EP,You are going to die, for free and inde-pendently through their website(www.phfat.co.za).

The three-piece, consisting of SmoothMike (vocals), Disco Izrael (vocals) andNarch (beats and production), have rec-ognised that in an increasingly competi-tive market where fan engagementcomes at a premium, artists cannot af-ford to follow traditional marketingmodels.

This is why, even with offers from sev-eral record labels, P.H.Fat decided to gothe independent route and make the mu-

sic available to their fans for free. The group believes that “the traditional

music distribution model is a thing of the pastand with it, so is the album per year model.”

Instead, they propose a model whereby theyrelease new content on a more regular basis,

giving listeners a reason to check back regu-larly and maintaining “top of mind” aware-ness.

Fans can download the EP from their web-site and, if they choose to, donate money tothe band using one of three ways: EFT, Paypal

or SMS (sending ‘PHFAT’ to38549 will donate R10).

It is through this uncon-ventional means of distrib-uting their music thatP.H.Fat hopes to distancethemselves from the bottom-line nature of the currentmusic scene and strive tobuild a relationship withtheir fans that is based onmutual respect and a pure, unadulterated love for mu-sic.

P.H.Fat will launch theirEP at Assembly on Fridaynight before taking it ontour.

Atlantic wantplayers to beprofessionalsThe Atlantic Nacional Football Club basedat the Portuguese and Italian clubs in Rug-by and Milnerton area are committed tothe development of soccer within the Por-tuguese, Italian and other communities atall levels from grassroots to elite.

The club is committed to promoting soc-cer programmes for every child with vari-ous ability levels. The development modelis aimed at enhancing, expanding and“professionalising” the growth of soccer inCape Town. As the majority of develop-ment of young players is left to volunteersespecially grassroots where it is parentscoaching their son/daughter at most clubs, the club believes in the professional devel-opment programme where they have com-petent and qualified coaches.

The club will have teams in the seniorleague as well as juniors from u-7 to u-17.

There is also a house league for recrea-tional purposes (ICCT). This programme isfor youngsters between the ages of 10 to 17.

Mini Soccer/ICCT mini soccer is an in-ternational recognised youth developmentprogramme targeted at children betweenthe ages of five and 10 in a non-competitiveenvironment.

The coaches at the club have soccercoaching certificates from Holland, Ger-many and Safa just to name a few.

Women and girls of all ages are welcometo come join a five-a-side tournament.

Training days are as follows: u-7, u-11, u-13 and over 35 on Mondays and Wednes-days at 17:30.

Under-9, u-15, u-17, first team and first re-serve team on Tuesdays and Thursdays at17:30.

Phone Michelle on 021 510 7201 for moreinformation.

Finish line now up for grabsThe absence of some heavyweights gavethe junior stand up paddlers (SUP) achance to shine during last week’s PrimiNaish Downwind Dash.

The 31 SUPs and 27 surfskiers were greet-ed by a weak south-easterly wind and a mod-erate swell at the start of the ninth race inthe current series.

Getting through the surf proved to be a bigchallenge with pretty much the entire firstSUP starting batch getting wiped out by amarauding set of waves. Boards, paddlesand bodies were scattered across the surf-zone but eventually everyone got underway.

The 13-year-old Kimon Dos Santos got linehonours after starting in the first bunch andfinishing ninth overall.

In the second start it was 16-year-old Dy-lan Frick who again seemed the man to beat.Half way down the course the wind diedcompletely and no more wave runs were of-fered. Pietro Muscas had passed Frick totake the lead only to see it taken right backonce the wind died.

Francois Frick (Dylan’s dad) also made acome back in the no–wind conditions, as didSebastien Cattelan who both passed Mus-cas.

Brad Adams had taken a very deep out-side line and came in with great speed capi-talising on smoother water and a windswitch to south-westerly to enter Small Bayjust behind Frick. Frick beat him to the linefor his second win in a row in 55min53s withAdams coming in 56min19s. Cattelan(57min27s) managed to catch and overtakeFrick senior to take his first podium posi-tion of the series.

Brigette van Aswegen completed herpreparations for the SUP World Champion-ships in Peru by once again beating morethan half the field and coming in 13th in1h05min50s with Tammy Robarts in a solidsecond position in 1h12min07s. MonikaWohlgemuth finished out the top three with

a time of 1h16min00s.Dos Santos’s great time of 1h03min59s

meant he beat Matthew van der Linden(1h04min38s) into third spot. There is a greatcompetition among the juniors with EthanKoopmans and Josh Robertson also puttingin fine performances.

Series leader Ivan van Vuuren and ChrisBertishbothmissedWednesdaynight’s racedue to their Peru commitments. It will be

difficult to regain their overall standings asthey will also miss tonight’s race.

This means Frick moves into top spot andlooks set to hold onto it for the time being.

The series overall standings has becomequite affected by the fact that some of thetop-dogs, Chris and Greg Bertish togetherwith Muscas have been forced to train forPeru Worlds on 12’6 boards and are now alsomissing a few races (Van Vuuren included).
