RESIDENTS MARCH: ‘COUNCILLOR MUST RESIGN’

Councillor in firing lineANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

A handful of Joe Slovo Park residents, under the guidance of the South Afri-can National Civic Organisation (San-

co), are demanding that ward councillor JoyMcCarthy be “relieved of her duties”.

On Friday about 50 residents marched tothe municipal buildings bearing a memo-randum in which they stated their demands.

The peaceful and legal march was careful-

ly monitored by Milnerton police, who havebeen on high alert over the past month dueto severe unrest in the informal settlement.

During March, calls for better housing ha-ve been replaced by calls for McCarthy’s re-signation. Some residents are claiming thatshe never meets with the community at lar-ge and fails in her mandate to help them.

McCarthy has told TygerBurger on nume-rous occasions that the unrest is being insti-gated by a few “bad apples” and that this isall part of a greater plan to make ward 4 un-

governable for the Democratic Alliance.Ward 4 falls under subcouncil 1, and the

chairperson, Heather Brenner, says the un-rest is undoubtedly a gameof electioneering.

Brenner is also wholly supportive ofMcCarthy, who she describes as one of thebest councillors she’s come across.

“She has a huge area, from Century Cityto Killarney Gardens, and then she has thislittle spot – Joe Slovo Park – that takes upmost of her time. This is classic electionee-ring. People are trying to stir up nonsense.

People are just trying to make a name forthemselves. It is a gross waste of time,” saysBrenner.

She doubts whether anything will comefrom the memorandum, which at worstmight result in a long investigation intoMcCarthy’s doings.

Sanco provincial organiser, Charles Kan-ku, says he met with certain members of thecommunity recently and they told him thatnot everyone is invited to these meetings.

Says McCarthy: “I do not deal only with ‘myfavourites’. I have regularly demonstrated Iwill meet with any individual or group whorequests it but will give preference to the re-gistered groups and the law abiding, not therabble rousers and inciters of violence whotake the law into their own hands anyway, despite my advice or input. I do in fact eng-age with the acknowledged community lea-ders in the form of emails, phonecalls andmeetings.”

When it was suggested to Kanku that San-co’s involvement in Joe Slovo Park is a gameof electioneering, he responded: “Some peo-ple think that just because it is election no-thing should be done and rather wait for itto pass, otherwise it will be called electionee-ring.”

During Kanku’s visit he was taken to thearea where law enforcement officials remo-ved illegal structures and “destroyed the ho-mes of families”.

According to him he nearly cried when hesaw it.

“People should have been given warning,

and also alternative housing,” he said.According to a Joe Slovo resident who was

removed from his illegal structure that day, they were given a warning just a few daysearlier.

McCarthy also said the residents werewarned years before that they were occupy-ing the land illegally.

With regard to alternative housing beingprovided to residents whose illegal structu-res were demolished, McCarthy said itwould be unfair to the thousands of familieswho are on the housing waiting list if otherssuddenly jumped the queue.

Kanku added: “Joe Slovo residents are mo-re concerned with the issues at hand thanto remove the councillor. The mission isn’tto remove the councillor, it is for the council-lor to correct what she is doing wrong.”

Kanku is also very unhappy with how theresidents have breached law and order inthe area.

“People cannot go and burn churches, schools or buses. Sanco doesn’t support thisbehaviour in the slightest. If they are unhap-

py they must follow the correct channels,”he concluded.

Several protests have turned ugly in themonth of March, which TygerBurger cover-ed extensively.

The Cape Chamber of Commerce and In-dustry has also joined the growing choir ofopposition when chamber president JanineMyburgh said: “We already have court judg-ments making union organisers responsiblefor the damage to property caused by theirundisciplined members on protest marchesand the same principle should apply to otherdemonstrations.

“There are usually organisers involvedand I would like to see some of them in courtand possibly being sentenced to performcommunity service. A bit of community ser-vicemight give themabetter insight into theproblems of service delivery,” she continu-ed.

“It is a basic principle of law that peoplewho performed illegal acts were responsiblefor the consequences of their illegal acti-ons.”

Tenebrae is ’n Latynse woordwat “donker” of “skaduwee” beteken.

Asmense se water af is, moet dit so gou moont-lik aangesit word.

My werknemers moet my vertrou en ek virhulle.

“Kyk, ’n man moet dinge balanseer. Al isek af, is die werk steeds in my agterkop.Maar tyd saam met my vrou en kinders isvir my baie kosbaar.” As iets by die Stadse waterbaas se huis breek, maak hy dit selfreg? “Nee, nee,” skerm Pierre. “Ek krymaar ’n loodgieter in.”

As aldie rioolpype aaneen in ’n lyn is, sal dit totin Romenië strek. Ook moet die Stad 44 331toilette diens.

A member of the Tijgerhof sector 1Neighbourhood Watch (TNW) recent-ly captured a break-in to hisneighbours property on his CCTV ca-meras.

He was able to publish the footageon their members-only Facebook pa-ge. It was then discovered that ano-ther four break-ins using similar mo-dus operandi had taken place. Soonafter, members of the TNW spottedthe vehicle in their area and the pa-trollers spent the next two hours follo-wing the suspects. They were able totake good quality pictures of the vehi-cle and suspects. Through the com-munity communication networks itwas discovered that this vehicle hasbeen spotted in Brackenfell, ParowandTableView.OnTuesday, memberDavid Farber spotted the vehicle inPringle Road, Tijgerhof. He immedia-tely followed them and contacted theMilnerton sector 1 commander, ConstMogamat Gabier.

The drivers of the suspicious vehi-cle realised they had been spotted andattempted to escape via Koeberg road. However, they were eventually ap-prehended by the police.

Tango 52, an active member of theTable View Neighbourhood Watch(TVNW) was contacted and got theball rolling through the TVNW net-work so that they were able to positi-vely identify one or more members ofthis crew and confirm that they wereresponsible for a break-in at TableView that same day.

Bondi Rossouw, a muscular dystrophya(MD) patient and a biker from DareDevils, has been without a motorcycle

since November after he was scammed. This Table View biker misses his Suzuki

Intruder 1400 so much that he gets a tearin his eye everytime he sees a motorcycle.

His wife, Antoinette, is now determinedto raise enough money so he can be “free”again.

Someone who has been particularly tou-ched by Bondi’s courage in battling a debili-tating disease and still manages to see thewonder in biking has proposed a plan.

If the Rossouws can raise R30 000 then hewill build Bondi a trike (a three-wheeled bi-ke).

For a MD patient three wheels will un-doubtedly be better than two.

“We are now organising a fundraiser atDuke of Hazzards’ in Montague Gardens on6 April.

“We will have tattoo artists there, shoo-ters girls, raffles, auctions, bands and enter-tainment! We’re hoping the biker commu-nity will support us.

“Most of them know the frustration ofgoing without your wheels for even a fewdays, and can sympathise with the frustra-tion Bondi must be feeling,” says Antoinet-te.

She adds jokingly that her husband now

suffers from BMS – Bike Missing Syndro-me.

“Ever since the scam he has been very, very down...”

Last year November her husband’s bikebroke down and they sent it to a well-knownbike mechanic near Milnerton.

The man asked for money in advance andeventually failed to deliver the whole bike.

Instead, what waited for the Rossouwswas a bikestripped of most of its parts.

The mechanic disappeared without a tra-ce.

The Rossouws lost R4 000 and so manyparts that Antoinette feels drained just talk-ing about it.

Milnerton police advised her to get legaladvice but in the meantime she has madeit her mission to raise the required fundsto buy her husband a trike.

“He will be so happy if he had one thathe would probably park it in the livingroom,” she says.

Bondi was diagnosed with MD when hewas 12 years old and fell in love with motor-cycles when he was 13.

She concludes: “Unfortunately the disea-se is taking its toll and his legs do not workso well anymore. Maybe this incident is ablessing in disguise...”

V For more information on the fundraiser or if youcan help with a donation you can contact Antoinette on 061 174 5592.

Many business people do not realise we arein the midst of a digital revolution. Profitsare being made in unusual ways using soci-al media. Everybody, including children, isusing Facebook, Twitter and blogs – socialmedia has infiltrated our lives.

Businesses are realising they cannot beleft behind and are using social media formarketing, finding surprisingly positive re-wards.

The playing field is levelled on the inter-net as small to medium businesses com-mand a professional presence and marke-ting acumen previously the domain of onlythe large corporates.

Of course, this media has its drawbacksand irresponsible use of social media cannegatively impact or even ruin your busi-ness.

But negative perceptions are easily pre-vented by planning your social media pre-sence and ensuring there are no flaws andinconsistencies. A little foresight and gui-dance is all that’s needed.

Your social media profile needs to be re-viewed and updated regularly to ensureconsistency and credibility in line with yo-ur business aspirations and offerings.

Approach social media in a positive moodto ensure your communication is not tain-ted by emotional stress. Undue criticism, bad language, accidently offending someo-ne’s feelings and poorly designed argu-ments reflect badly on you and your busi-ness.

If you have a great idea and pop it ontosocial media, be aware that people can copyit. Protect yourself andyouruniqueproductbefore communicating with the social me-dia universe.

Many business people do not realize thereis little privacy on social media sites so becareful, especially if your business and soci-al status updates are at odds.

Your social media presence should al-ways reflect good sense, responsibility andgrounded character. If your private profiledoesn’t, it can set off alarms and affect howyour business clients view you and your bu-siness. Your publicly visible private profilemust be open to scrutiny. It is always bestto assume that anything you place on socialmedia is going to be absorbed by the public.

Be aware your client target market maycomprise a diverse number of people fromdifferent backgrounds. Any post or remarkyou make must take this into account. Al-ways be sure of your facts and give opinionswhich are carefully considered to avoid re-percussions.

Your business could suffer so easily witha few strokes of the keypad. Prevention isbetter than cure.

Rushing into placing your business on so-cial media sites may seem like a great ideaand it is, but only if you understand the me-dia you are using, check the rules and usethe new technology to best advantage.

V Join the “No Limits” Workshop on 15April to create the foundation for a sound, profitable business marketed on line via so-cial media. This will be held at the Rust–en–Vrede coffee shop from 11:00 to 15:30. Thesubsidised cost is R450 and includes a lightlunch and hands on computer experience tolaunch your business onto the most succes-sful platforms of social media.

To RSVP contact Mary Anne Murray on0828825656 or [email protected] The writer is part of a panel of three presentingthe No Limits workshop focusing on the use of socialmedia for business.

“The weather plays a part, but when loo-

Bikers give blankets to needyWestern Cape residents have four weeks tocomment on the proposal to increase motorvehicle licence fees by 3.4%

On Friday 28 March the provincial govern-ment gazette published the draft regulationspertaining to motor vehicle licence (MVL)fee increases.

“Because this increase affects over 1,7 mil-lion vehicle owners... the proposed increaseshould be subject to a full public participa-tion process,” said transport and publicworks MEC Robin Carlisle last week.

Last year increases of an average 5.3% we-re implemented in the province.

This year the proposed fee increasesamount to an average 3.4% increase for theWestern Cape, which is lower than the cur-rent 5.9% inflation rate.

“During the period 2001 to 2005/06, the Wes-tern Cape increased its licence fees dramati-cally by an average of 10% over five years, which led to this province having the highestlicence fees in most classes of vehicles andtrailers in the country,” said Carlisle. By 2006motor vehicle registration and licence fees inthe Western Cape were on average 50% hig-her than that of other provinces.

“In addition to the burden on ordinary mo-torists, many truck owners registered theirvehicles in adjoining provinces where feeswere lower, thus significantly reducing Wes-tern Cape revenues.”

Accordingly, the province had initially notincreased its fees since 2005 until last year, while other provinces have increased theirsduring the same period.

“As a result our licence fees for sedans andlight vehicles have come broadly into linewith other provinces, while our heavy taretrucks and trailers are in many cases signifi-cantly lower than neighbouring provinces,”said Carlisle.

The draft regulations will be available forpublic comment for four weeks until 25 April.

The draft regulations will be available onwww.westerncape.gov.za/transport/pubs/regulations

Residents of the Western Cape have fourweeks to provide comment on the proposal.V All comments can be submitted to: Head of Department, R Barreiro, Western Cape Government Transport and Public Works, PO Box 2603, Cape Town,8000. or, email: Randal.Barreiro@westerncape.gov.za.

“Children sit at home and all they do iswatch television. Little do parents knowthat we have some wonderful walking trailswithin the City of Cape Town’s boundary.”

Sue Espey, one of the members of theFriends of the Blaauwberg ConservationArea (BCA) talked to TygerBurger duringthe 4.4km hike through one of the mostbeautiful areas along the West Coast.

The new Coastal Dune Hiking Trail, justopposite Eerstesteen along Otto du PlessisDrive, just opened on Sunday.

As it snakes below Blouberg Hill with Ta-ble Mountain and Robben Island lying onthe horizon, a handful of people walked totheir heart’s content. Quite why there we-ren’t more is a mystery.

“Anyone can park safely at EerstesteenLog Cabin and walk on this trail. It is sim-ply marvellous,” muses Espey.

“All of this belongs to Cape Nature,” shecontinued with a sweeping motion. “TheBCA now has two trails, this one and theBattle of Blouberg.

If one wanted to hike the latter then oneshould book with us because there is a secu-rity gate. With this one you can do it whene-ver you want.”

The path along the Coastal Dune trail wasrecently cleared for hiking purposes.

One just follows the poles planted firmlyin the ground.

The BCA holds a hike once a month, nor-mally towards the end of it, and charges R20for non-members to join.

It is, of course, free for members, so if youwanted to become one with nature everynow and again then the path forward is aseasy as the one guiding you through the Co-astal Dune Hiking Trail.

Health budget brings good newsNew emergency centres at the Karl Bre-

mer hospital and a new communityhealth centre in Du Noon are contai-

ned within the provincial health depart-ment’s recently announced 2014/2015 bud-get.

Also contained in thebudget areupgradesand additions to the emergency centre atTygerberg hospital.

The expenditure was announced by theWestern Cape minister of health Theuns Bo-tha when he tabled the new budget at theTygerberg hospital on 18 March.

Remarking on the success of the previousbudget, Botha stated his satisfaction withthe purchase of new equipment andhighlighted the MRI scanners replaced atTygerberg and Red Cross Hospital, and thepurchase of a state-of-the-art PET scannerat Tygerberg hospital.

He said the health of the population wasthe top priority for the coming financial ye-ar, with the provincial government havingdeveloped a “bold vision” expressed in theHealthcare 2030 strategy which was first an-nounced two years ago.

“The escalating burden of disease in thisprovince demands action. Heathcare 2030calls for a fundamental shift from illness towellness and every citizen taking responsi-bility for their health and wellness,” Bothasaid.

Almost two thirds of the coming financialyear’s R17 338 billion health budget (whichshows an increase of R1 360 billion from theprevious budget) will be spent on salaries. The rest, R5 310 billion, is allocated to theprocurement of goods and services, inclu-ding a renewed focus on the prevention andtreatment of priority conditions, such asmental health, child health, women’s andmaternal health, and chronic disease.

Botha said although this was but a smallportion of the annual budget, he was happyto announce that R13,7 million has been al-located for cochlear implants, hearing aidsand other devices to assist children with de-afness, and a further R2 million to providesupport for people living with intellectualdisability and challenging behaviour.

The 2014/2015 budgetHealth will receive 36.2% of the entire

provincial budget in 2014/15, the highest de-partmental allocation in the province, sig-nalling the importance the Western Capegovernment placed on the provision of he-alth services.

This budget is spread over eight program-mes:

V Administration,V District health services,V Emergency medical services,V Provincial hospital services,V Central hospitals,V Health sciences and training,V Health care support services andV Health facilities management.

Previous successInhis budget speech,Botha referred to the

successes of the Healthcare 2030 initiativeover the last two years, which aimed to shiftfocus from illness to wellness. This initiati-ve included R2,7 billion spent on seven cli-nics and community day centres, sevenemergency medical service (EMS) stations, five forensic pathology laboratories, andtwo district hospitals across the province. In addition many sites have been upgradedor renovated and modernised.

Emergency medical services were boos-ted around the time of the Soccer WorldCup, and these levels have been maintaned,he said.

The department had procured 18 additio-nal ambulances and replaced 393 old ambu-lances.

According to Botha, the department of he-alth prides itself on the positive statistics of

the last five years, including:V The transmission rates of HIV from mo-

ther to child have reduced from 3,6% in2009/10 to 1.7% in 2012/13 which is the lo-west rate in the country. The total clientson anti-retroviral therapy were over 134 000in 2013 compared to around 75 000 in 2009.

V The Western Cape has the highest TBcure rate in the country at almost 82% of ca-ses reported per year.

V Response times for life threatening prio-rity one calls of less than 15 minutes in ur-ban areas have improved from 28% to 74%of cases over the last five years.

V Maternal deaths in facilities have decre-ased from 107 per 100 000 live births in2009/10 to 60 per 100 000 live births in2012/13.

V Child mortality rates for under-fives inthe Western Cape is 29 compared to a natio-nal average of 53 in 2010 and the infant mor-tality rate is 23 compared to a national ave-rage of 37 in 2010. The rate is calculated bythe number of children dying under the ageof one, divided by the number of live birthsduring the year and multiplied by 1000.

V The Western Cape has the highest lifeexpectancy in the country at 70.1 years forfemales and 64.2 years for males for the peri-od 2011 to 2016.

“Ek dink dit (Antarktika) was vir my diemoeilikste avontuur nóg.

Ons het baie vrien-de gemaak, vriende for life.

Drug dogs delight Dunatos pupils

Thanks to the organisation Drugs Against DogsSA, Dunatos Private Remedial School grade 6learner, Michael Linderoth, quickly learns that hiding drugs from a dog such as Tara doesn’t work.Looking on is Tara’s owner, Joanne Visser. PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

When Werner Fichtner asked the nine- andten-year-olds how many of them have seensomeone using drugs before, nine out of tenraised their hands.

Drug abuse knows no bounds.Fichtner and his team of volunteers from

Dogs Against Drugs-SA (based in TableView) visited Dunatos Private RemedialSchool in Stikland last week Wednesday tocreate awareness around drug abuse.

The children were captivated from thestart, largely thanks to dogs Tara, Shadow,Turbo, and Orca who were used to sniff outdrugs from bags and pockets.

“It is important to deliver a message thechildren will never forget,” says Fichtner.

He has been working with dogs for deca-des and started the dog school were Tara andher friends were trained.

Thanks to his idea of taking training dogsto schools, thousands of kidshavebeenexpo-sed to the all-important message – don’t riskexperimenting with drugs.

“If you do drugs you will be in one of threeplaces – it is unavoidable. You are either inthe street, on your way to jail, or in the gra-

ve,” he tells the wide-eyed children.Following his brief message, the dogs en-

ter the room to much fanfair. The very presence of the four-legged

friends is enough to imprint Fichtner’s mes-sage deep into the minds of “tomorrow’s lea-ders”.

Fichtner hides drugs such as tik, cocaine, dagga and heroin in bags for the dogs to sniffout.

One of the dogs will lie next to a bag withdrugs, the other will put her paw on it andanother will grab the bag with intent.

The children adore this act.Fichtner then asks volunteers to sit in a

line and hide one or two containers of drugsamong them. The dogs find these easily – alltoo happy that their training has paid off.

While the children cheer, the dogs trotaround the room with their chests puffedout.

Whether the powerful message of DogsAgainst Drugs-SA remains with all thechildren is debatable, but as long as a fewwill now say “no!” when temptation comes, then Fichtner’s team was successful.V Contact Fichtner if you want his team of volunteersto perform at a particular school, or go to their Facebook page. Early last Sunday morning Imtiaz Ramat-hoolal and his Blouberg Car Wash team onMarine Drive readied themselves for a busyday ahead. Melkbosstrand’s ACVV Koebergpupils were on their way and a Charity CarWash was about to commence in support ofthe ACVV Koeberg.

People at ACVV Koeberg’s office were ap-parently surprised and delighted when Ra-mathoolal offered them the benefit of one

day’s hard labour from his team. Wordspread quickly. Advertisements and posterswere set up and Blouberg Car Wash was aregular ants’ nest.

Says Annemie Beukes: “Our Toyota Con-dor was also due for a clean thus we decidedto join in on the fun together with some ofour pupils. Like a well-oiled machine, ACVVKoeberg starts every day by fetching all thelittle children from our surrounding farm

settlements to our creche. Here they are be-ing prepared for their first year in the ‘BigSchool’. They also receive a nourishing mealeach day – sometimes the only food they getduring theweek–and lots of loveandattenti-on.

“Our social workers are always at the rea-dy to handle social and domestic issues athome. Our children flourish in our care. They had a wonderful time at the Charity

Car Wash!”In order to care for these children ACVV

Koeberg needs all the help and support theycan get.

Beukes thanked all the sponsors involved.“From the bottom of our hearts, and especi-ally all the clients that supported theCharityCar Wash. It was such a huge success thatwe will be holding our next Charity CarWash on Saturday 26 April.”

On Saturday morning I re-ceived a phone call from a mansaying he was from my creditcard company, saying my cardwas about to expire.

I thought it was a courtesyreminder call from the compa-ny reminding me of its expiry.

But then he said that some-one from Nigeria wanted totake R3000 out of my accountand he wanted to confirm ifthat was genuine. Of course, itwasn’t. He then wanted tocancel the transaction, forwhich he needed the middleeight digits of my card numberbut I refused.

He warned me that he wouldthen allow the transaction togo through and if I complainedto the credit card company, they would reject the com-plaint because of my badreaction to his call.

Immediately afterwards Iphoned the company, theyconfirmed there wasn’t apending transaction and thecall I had received was a scamas I had suspected.

Let this serve as a warningto all: don’t give personalinformation. Con artists arepersuasive; that’s how theymake their living.

Ek is vanaf verlede jaar ’n

SLICE OF LIFE

Korrupsie vier landwyd hoogty. Eskom dreig gedurig metbeurtkrag.

Maar tog, as jy diep grawe, is daar noghoop.

Wiehann Geldenhuys and Arno Spies of The Kill Heavy talk about their music on the OrangeCouch.

Kill Heavy searchfor ‘pure’ soundLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

“At the end of the day, we let thesongs write themselves.”

So says vocalist and guitaristArno Spies about his band, The Kill Heavy’smusic.

Having played in heavier bands before,Arno and fellow guitarist, Wiehann Gelden-huys, wanted to go back to the “bare neces-sities” with this album, to create music inits purest form.

The two realised that although they wereplaying distortion driven songs, they al-ways wrote music on acoustic guitars to be-gin with.

The Kill Heavy started just over a yearago as an acoustic duo. They soon realisedthat they did need a rhythm section though,so they roped in AJ Graham on bass andMorné du Preez on drums.

“I think we try to get it as raw as possible, without any type of effects,” Wiehann saysof the band’s music.

He and Arno write the songs themselves, but add that the rhythm section also put alot of input into the process. They are of theview that no one in the band is above thesongs.

Blood, sweat and tearsThe band released their debut EP titled

Invisible Spaces last year, but are planningthe release of their new album, Straight af-ter Life, at the end of the month.

The 12-track album will include reworkedversions of some of the songs on their EP,along with seven new songs recorded withTeeJay Terblanche from Coffee Stained Vi-nyl.

“It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears, butwe hope the finished product will get us onthe map,” Arno says.

While he is aware that it sounds clichédwhen artists say they write from personalexperience, Arno points out that that’s whatshapes a musician at the end of the day. TheKill Heavy’s music comes straight from theheart.

“A few years back, we all had to sort ofgive up on music for various reasons, butmusic never gave up on us,” Arno states.

He says the emotion of being back in aband and playing music again is what fuelstheir songs.

Churning out the tunesWiehann is surprised at the speed at

which the band is releasing material, butsays he’s happy with the sound.

The band has done a lot in the year theyhave been together. Besides the EP, they’vereleased a music video for their song ‘Hi-ding’, and after only two months togetherwere finalists in the Rolling Stone Rockstar-ter competition.

Local blogger ‘Gary Cool’ was so impres-sed by ‘Hiding’ that he changed his ‘singlefor the week’ feature immediately after hea-ring the song.

The music video for ‘Hiding’, which con-veys emotions of frustration and anger, wasshot by Johnny Swanepoel in what Arnocalls an “eight hour frenzy”.

Johnny was at school with them andwhen they were looking to shoot the video, they saw that he was involved in filmingwith his company Gleam Studios.

“We got together, brain stormed over afew beers and Wiehann came up for the ba-sic idea for the video,” Arno explains.

The band receives positive feedbackwherever they go and with the help of theirnew album they’ll hopefully be making aconsiderable dent in the local scene duringthe coming months.

“Watch out, we’re coming for you,” Arnojokes.

Ransom attacks target dataMost businesses are run on computers

nowadays. But using the internet toaccess emails, surf the internet and

interact on social media sites carries thethreat of attacks from malicious program-mes and viruses.

Ransomware, like the name suggests, is anew form of malicious software that cybercriminals are using to literally hold yourcomputer to ransom, demanding paymentfor the safe return of your information, ex-plains Roberto Caprio, MD of Dial-a-Nerd.

Currently the most dangerous ransomwa-re programme is CryptoLocker. The authorsof this programme have gone to greatlengths to make it so – by bringing out newversions, keeping up with changes in protec-tion technology and targeting a variety of pe-ople over a sustained period.

InfectionCryptoLocker focuses on all versions of

Windows, including XP, Vista, Windows 7and 8.

The easiest way for this programme to re-ach an extensive number of people veryquickly, is via email spam.

The infection is typically spread throughemails pretending to be work related issuessuch as delivery requests, payment details, and so on, sent to company email addresses.

The email contains an .EXE attachment, disguised as a PDF file ‘PDF.EXE’, that when

opened, infects the computer, Caprio conti-nues.

Newer attacks seem to be via Facebook inthe form of video downloads, where the vie-wer is asked to download an application torun the video. This application in all likeli-hood is some form of malware, with theworst case scenario being CryptoLocker, hesaid.

“Once the ransomware has been downloa-ded onto the computer it will encrypt the fi-les and display a CryptoLocker paymentprogramme on the screen, demanding a ran-som be paid in order to decrypt the files.

“A timer will also be displayed statinghow much time is left to complete the pay-ment. Once payment is received the files willbe decrypted, although this is not 100% gua-ranteed,” Caprio warns.

Not only does CryptoLocker affect the lo-cal files on the computer, but files that areon ‘mapped’ drives can also be affected (filesthat have been given a drive letter such asD; E; F). These files could be on an externalhard drive, folder on a network or a docu-ment in the Cloud. If you have your Dropboxfolder, for example, mapped locally, it couldencrypt those files as well.

Back up your dataAlthough it may seem like there is no ho-

pe, there are a number of things that you cando to protect your computer against Crypto-

Locker.V Backup your data:“We cannot reiterate this enough. Bac-

king up your data is the most importantthing you can do if you own a computer. Itwill keep your data safe in a number of situa-tions.

“We suggest that you make backing up yo-ur data part of your daily regime. Backingup to the Cloud is a simple and automatedprocess that will provide huge peace of mindin the event of a disastrous situation,” hecontinues.

In the event of an attack from ransomwa-re, being able to restore a recent backup willmean that very few of your documents willbe lost.

V Install a reputable security protectionprogramme.

V Show hidden file extensions:

ProtectionBecause Microsoft does not show extensi-

ons by default, all the attachments fromCryptoLocker look like normal PDF files. Byre-enabling the ability to see the full file-ex-tension, it will be easier to spot suspiciousfiles.

V Always keep your software up to date.Malware authors pounce on users run-

ning outdated software as they are aware ofthe weaknesses in the operating system, which they abuse in order to attack yourcomputer. Be aware that malware authorsare sneaky and can disguise their creationsas software update notifications. Enable au-tomatic updates, but possibly double checkon the software vendor’s website to make su-re that they are legitimate.

V Disconnect from the WiFi or unplugfrom the network immediately if you thinkyour computer might have succumbed torandomware, but the CryptoLocker screenhasn’t appeared. Disconnecting from the Wi-Fi or network may interrupt the encryptionprocess and save some of your files.

If you see this shield on your screen, you're indeep trouble.

Stad verdien tot R400 000 met selfoneMICHELLE LINNERT

@linnertmb

we “nee” geantwoord.“Ek sit my foon dadelik in my handsak op

stuur SMS’e...”V “Slegs by uitsondering.

Women’s race brings a smile

Andi Bernstein, head of hockey andsports coordinator at Table View HighSchool, has just returned from a very suc-cessful trip to Lusaka, Zambia.

She was the manager to the nationalu-18 girls hockey team that participatedin the Youth Olympic Games qualifyingtournament. The winners get automaticentry into the Youth Olympic Games thattakes place in Nanjing, China in Augustthis year.

The SA girls’ team was the only teamto remain unbeaten throughout the weekbeating Zimbabwe 13-2; Zambia 7-2; Na-mibia 9-2; and Kenya 15-0 before playingZambia in the finals and winning 5-3 totake home the gold medal.

The Youth Olympic Games is all aboutparticipation and goodwill, and with thisin mind, the format of the game has beenchanged from the original full field, 11-a-side game, to hockey 5s.

The field is much smaller (about halfsize), and there are four field players anda goalkeeper in each team.

The field is surrounded by boards, sothe ball stays in all the time unless liftedover the side.

It is very quick and tiring to play. The match consists of three 12 minute

playing periods, with 2 minute rest be-tween each period, and players can besubbed on and off at any time.

Andi ready to go to China

Andi Bernstein and the national u18 girlshockey team are set for the Youth OlympicGames.
