A travesty of inconsolable pro-portions has hit the northern su-burbs – Milnerton High Schooland the Wootton family in parti-cular.
The immensely popular andexemplary head boy, Jake Wootton(18), died this Easter weekend afterhe was hit by a car in Hermanus onGood Friday.
News of his tragic accident anduntimelydeath spread fast on socialnetworking sites, so by the time theschool opened its doors again ye-sterday morning, everyone alreadyknew.
Principal Paul Besener, his staffand every single learner were de-vastated.
Besener says everyone got toge-ther in the school hall on Tuesdayduring a memorial service, but headmits that the school’s grief andabject sorrow will last many moredays.
“We are very, very sad and shoc-ked,” he states.
“Jake was such a wonderfullywell-balanced, yet unconventionalperson ... He was a cool guy, a niceguy...”
Messages on Facebook and Twit-ter of denial and shock were repla-ced by bereavement and support onSunday when the life support ma-chines were switched off at the Vin-cent Pallotti Hospital in Pinelands.
According to Lt Fadila Septem-ber, spokesperson for the Herma-nus police, Jake and a few of hisfriends were walking in Dirkie UysStreet on Friday evening at 23:20,when they heard a car approaching.
“The car hooted at them, so thegroup split on two, but for some rea-son Wootton ran over to the othergroupbeforehewashit,” elaboratesSeptember.
She cannot confirm at this stage
whether alcohol played a part in theaccident, but she adds that a case ofculpable homicide is being investi-gated.
One of Jake’s best friends and ey-ewitness to the events that unfoldedthat fateful evening said in Die Bur-ger that the eight of them were wal-
king on the side of the road whenthey saw the vehicle speeding to-wards them.
Jakewas first admitted to thepro-
vincial hospital in Hermanus, andthen he was transported to the Vin-cent Pallotti Hospital.

A Vredenburg police captain was arrestedfor house robbery last week Tuesday after so-me good work by the Milnerton Police.
The South African Police Service’s Wes-tern Cape media centre spokesperson, Lieu-tenant Colonel Andrè Traut, elaborates: “Apolice captain aged 29 was arrested at his re-sidence on suspicion that he and four sus-pects committed a house robbery in SummerGreens on Saturday 24 March at 13:00. His 30-year-old girlfriend was also arrested on thesame suspicion.”
It is alleged that the police officer, accom-panied by three males and one female, perpe-trated a robbery at a residence situated inRunners Green Road, after they threatenedthe two 19-year-old house occupants with aknife. Entry to the residence was gainedthrough an unlocked front door. The sus-pects, who were driving in a white BMW fledthe scene with a flat screen television set.
AMilnertonpolice patrol spotted theBMWin the same street prior to the incident, andthe policeman was recognised as the driver.
Investigation of the case led detectives to thesuspect’s residence lastweek, wherehimandhis girlfriend were arrested. Three other sus-pects are still being sought on the same case.
The stolen television is yet to be recovered.Traut concludes emphatically: “When so-
meone commits a crime we are eager to ar-rest him or her, but when that person is amember of the police, we are even more de-termined to affect the arrest. We need tomaintain law and order with trustworthy po-lice officers only.”

The People Living With Cancer (PLWC) Can-cer Buddies organisation has been ear-marked as one of the beneficiaries in thespectacular Want ons Kan/’Cause we Can!concert.
PLWC Cancer Buddies was established in2000 by Linda Greeff and Carl Liebenberg, both of whom are cancer survivors.
The organisation develops volunteer coun-selling guidelines and support thathelps peo-ple who have been diagnosed with cancer.
“After a person has been diagnosed withcancer, that is when he or she needs all thesupport they can get,” says Greef.
“The aim is to provide support to newly di-agnosed cancer patients when treatmentstarts, to assist with the initial adjustmentto the process.
“This service ensures that a cancer patientand their caregivers have access to support
services near their treatment units. We needthem to be cancer survivors and not cancervictims.”
The organisation offers a buddy supportnetwork where cancer patients can interactwith and receive advice and support fromcancer survivors who have a similar profile, disease and treatment protocol.
She says the importance of support whilelearning to live with cancer is fundamentalto developing a true cancer survivor ap-proach.
“Dealing with each chapter of survival in-volves more than medical management – itrequires attention to your psychological, so-cial, emotional, spiritual, working and prac-tical needs as well.
“Developing a patient active approachwhich empowers the patient to take somecontrol over the process and which encour-ages them to see healing as more that justphysical, is an important outcome the cancer
buddies tries to achieve.”Greef says talking with someone who has
survived cancer and has regained their lifeoffers hope and a sense of empowerment.
“Through empowerment comes a positiveattitude, which has a profound effect on theoutcome of the treatment.”
PLWC has branches in the Western Cape,Eastern Cape, Gauteng and in Mpumalanga.
Currently they are trying to set up supportgroups in all the small communities such asDelft and Bishop Lavis.
Greef says a challenge they face is fundingwhich is always a problem.
“We are in need of funding and that’s whywe are so grateful to be a beneficiary of the’Cause we Can! concert. We need to rendera service to people. We are trying to appointtwo social workers to assist the people whoneed cancer support in this crucial time.”
Anyone who would like to assist or join theorganisation can call 021 949 4060.

. From page 1.Jake was declared braindead on Satur-
day, but according to Besener, Jake’s pa-rents chose to leave him on life supportuntil most of his organs could be remo-ved for donation purposes.
Besener speaks for all when he says:“We know what kind of contribution Ja-ke would have made on society. He wan-ted to be an engineer, so his maths wasparticularly strong. He was also verygood at sports and when we had dayssuch as Shavathon, then he would al-ways be the first to shave off his hair.”
One friend said on Twitter: “Yourbeautiful heart and kind spirit will liveon forever.”
Jake’s off-beat sense of humour andundeniable popularity among all whoknew him are clear to see on the memo-rable photos on his Facebook page.
. TygerBurger was not able to speakto a family member at the time of goingto press.
The newspaper phoned the land line ofthe Woottons on Tuesday morning andeven though someone answered, no onespoke. The raw emotion was almost tan-gible.
Jake is survived by his father Steve, his mother Susan and an older sister,Leigh.

The saying, “Never stop dreaming,” onceagain paid dividends when the Mvula fa-mily moved from the crowded Du Noonsettlement to a tranquil neighbourhoodin Brooklyn.
Just a few weeks ago, they were temptedto regress into a state of pessimism, but theyalways believed their time in the sunshinewill come.
Now, the peace and quiet is almost deafe-ning.
Over the years they’ve become used to theraucous neighbours next to their Du NoonRDP home, but these days the only soundsthat greet them when they open their eyesare birds singing softly with the breakingdawn.
The contrast between their recent andcurrent home is quite staggering.
Lawrence (43) and Zameka Mvula (34) areshining examples how those living in relati-ve squalor can change their life for the bet-ter. Lawrence, who falls in a low-incomegroup, works for the municipality and Za-meka is studying to become a nurse. Theydon’t have a lot in this world, but they che-rish the things that matter to them – suchas their four-year-old boy named Licebo, their love for each other, and now theirbrand-new house.
Zameka’s sparkling eyes glance over thebright walls of their living room and thenshe says proudly: “When I was in Standard7, my teacher asked me, ‘What is yourdream?’ I said that one day I want to marry, have a big house and drive a new car!”
Two of the three boxes have been ticked,so she is well on her way to realising herdeepest desires.
She says she never doubted that shewould be able to live in a picture perfecthouse, but it must’ve been hard waiting inDu Noon for it to finally materialise.
“I know that it is so difficult without mo-ney, but if you want something, then youmust just follow your dreams and you willsee. Don’t ever listen to all the negativity!Don’t sleep until you’ve done what you’ve
always wanted,” she urges, before addingthat God gives one strength every day.
The Mvulas worked through non-profit or-ganisation Communicare’s Property Develo-pers (Yes! Properties), which will ultimatelyenable them to own a high-standard afforda-ble house.
They dealt with sales and marketing coor-dinator, Jason Poole, and thanked him for hishelpful advice throughout the process.
Says Poole: “They moved from a one-roomRDP house into an affordable one built withsuperb quality. It is a complete lifestyleupliftment for them.”
These houses form part of a strip develop-ment of one and two storey freehold proper-ties in a new street off Koeberg Road in a su-burb which has been declared an area of ur-ban redevelopment.
Communicare currently owns 3 000 low-cost social rental housing units and apart-ments.
What dreams are made ofLawrence and Zameka Mvula will provethat dreams come true when they become the proud owners of this house inBrooklyn. Photo: André Bakkes

Visitors to the Blaauwberg Conservation Ar-ea (BCA) now have the option to spend thenight under the stars following the launchof a new overnight facility.
The BCA presents one of the few view-points in the world from where one can seetwo proclaimed World Heritage Sites: TableMountain and Robben Island.
The mayoral committee member for eco-nomic, environmental and spatial planning,Belinda Walker, on Thursday visited thenew overnight facility.
The 1 445 hectare reserve offers evidenceof early human occupation, with shell mid-dens (dung hills) dating back some 15 000years. The reserve also conserves the site ofthe 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg. On Blaauw-berg Hill, several buildings were construct-
ed during World War II, including a radarstation, a lookout and a mess room.
The radar station has been revamped intoa sleeping room for four people in two bedsand two bunkbeds.
“There is also a little lounge with a sofaand coffee table, a kitchen, a toilet and ashower and a view to die for,” said Walkerafter visiting the facility.
“I was thinking of staying there myself butunfortunately I had to get back to work,” sheadded.
Overnight visitors can drive to the stationgaining access to the reserve through thegate on the eastern border of the reserve.
Booking of the facility will be donethrough the city and should be open to thepublic within the next couple of weeks.

Staff at the Sanccob rehabilitation centrein Table View have of late been honingtheir parenting skills something fierce.
In March the centre took 113 Hartlaub’sgull and 14 African penguin chicks under itswing.
Two weeks ago 71 Swift Tern chicks werealso placed in the foster care of the centre’svolunteers.
The birds were rescued from the top of abuilding in the V&A Waterfront. The chickswere left alone by their parents while hunt-ing for food. Maintenance work to the build-ing frightened the chicks and caused someof them to accidentally fall from the roof intothe ocean.
Bruce Dyer from the department of envi-ronmental affairs and the staff of the TwoOceans Aquarium fortunately came to theflustered chicks’ aid and transported them tothe Southern African Foundation for theConservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob).
At Sanccob the chicks received stabilisa-tion and de-worming fluid, identificationnumbers and were examined for any physi-cal injuries.
During the next couple of weeks the chickswill be fed mullet fish once a day, and receivevitamins to help build their strength.
Once thebirdspass the centre’s release cri-teria which includes waterproofing evalua-tions and flying tests, they will receive iden-tification rings and be released at Robben Is-land where they can be monitored in thefuture.
. The Swift Tern is commonly found on
coastlines in the south-east Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the western PacificOcean. In southern Africa they are a com-mon sight at marine shores and estuarieswith some 6 000 breeding pairs remaining.

ANDRÉ BAKKES
In the past 14 months, 31 424 motor-ists were caught speeding on Bos-mansdam,Plattekloof,VryburgerandDe Grendel roads.
Despite the speed limit on all theseroads being 60km/h, the three biggest of-fenders were photographed going 152, 157and 168km/h respectively.
These shocking statistics were ac-quired and released by ward councillorJames Vos after yet another accident onVryburger Avenue in Bothasig.
Last weekend, a person hit a curb lateat night, rolled his Honda Ballade and de-stroyed a couple of walls and a potplant.
He escaped with only minor injuries. The residents who live near a particu-
larly deceiving bend in the road have hadenough of vehicles rolling past theirhouses in the middle of the night.
James Gough says it’s the third timethat a car has smashed through the wallbetween his and his neighbour’s proper-ty.
“It’s a hell of a sound! Like a planecrash!” he exclaims.
The neighbour, Chris de Koker, likensthe noise to “the end of the world”.
“All you hear is the car rolling andthudding,” he recalls.
“I usually park where the Honda cameto a standstill, but because my wife andI were leaving for Vredenburg early onthe Saturday morning, it wasn’t thecase!”
In May last year another vehicle rolledonto his property, but that time it endedup right on top of his uninsured Golf.
Oneofhis daughters lives just a fewme-tres away from this parking spot and DeKoker fears for her life.
“We’ve lived here for 20 years, Jameshas been here for 18 years, and it’s alwaysbeen a problem. Nothing will be doneabout it,” he continues.
Vos is trying to get traffic lights in-stalled just before the bend in the road,on the corner ofVryburger andAdamTasStreet, but apparently the traffic coming
from the latter isn’t of a high enough vol-ume.
Vos is also hesitant to have a zebracrossing over Vryburger Avenue, since itgives pedestrians false confidence tocross without really looking.
It is also apparently forbidden to buildspeed humps on the road, as per the na-tional Road Traffic Act.
Vos is, nonetheless, very concernedabout the speed-junkies in Bothasig andsurrounds, hence the request for statis-tics from the traffic department.
“The increase in accidents taking placein the suburb resulting in the damage toresidential property as well as the loss oflife or serious injuries as a result of theseaccidents are shocking,” he says.
“It is clear to me that a very disturbingand complete disregard for traffic andmunicipal by-laws exists in our city. Ona daily basis one sees flagrant breachesof traffic regulations, unauthorisedbuilding activities, and contravention ofmunicipal policies and by-laws. The factof the matter is that all motorists shouldadhere to the basic rules of the road. Itis unacceptable in a civilised society thatthere still people who wilfully ignore traf-fic regulations.”
The statistics are very comprehensiveand fascinating to dissect.
From January this year to end ofMarch, 651 speeding cases were recordedinVryburgerAvenuewith thehighest be-ing 103km/h.
On Bosmansdam Road, 3 029 cases wererecorded during the same period, thehighest being 127km/h.
On Plattekloof Road, 1 101 cases wererecorded with 143km/h the highest andon De Grendel Avenue, 1 049 cases wererecorded with 119km/h the highest.
Vos concludes: “The reality is that traf-fic services across the board must bebeefed up. I have again written to thecity’s safety and security department re-questing additional funding for the train-ing and deployment of more traffic en-forcers, as well as an operational strategyto deal with traffic violations in residen-tial areas.”
Disregard for thelaw ‘is disturbing’

The South African Social Security Agen-cy (Sassa) seems to be blaming pensio-ners, parents and caregivers for the re-cent mayhem in the pay-out of socialgrants.
Both the minister of social developmentBathabile Dlamini and Sassa CEO VirginiaPetersen have repeatedly given assurancesthat the re-registration of beneficiaries ne-cessitated by the changeover to the CashPaymaster System would not disrupt grantpayments.
Sassa now admits that “several systemglitches” delayed the payment of grants sin-ce 2 April. In a full-page advertisement in theBusiness Report on Sunday, Sassa blamesthese “glitches” onbeneficiarieswho“panic-ked” and put “pressure on the system”.
“This blame-shifting is unacceptable,”said Mike Waters, DA shadow minister of so-cial development in a statement last week.
“The grants system is a national compe-tency managed by Sassa, which falls under
the department of social development. Sassaand the department therefore have joint res-ponsibility to ensure that grants are paid outtimeously during the re-registration pro-cess.”
According to him the advertisementswould have cost Sassa at least R213 000 – orthe equivalent of 177 old age grants or 803child support grants.
“We have previously asked the chairper-son of the portfolio committee on social deve-lopment to call both minister Dlamini andMs Petersen to appear before the committeeto give feedback on the management of there-registration process and the vetting ofSassa officials involved in grant pay-outs.When this invitation is accepted, we willquestion Sassa on the reasoning behind theadvertising campaign and the steps taken toaddress the ‘glitches’ in the system.
“For many, social grants are their main li-velihood. It is imperative that mechanismsare put in place to ensure a smooth transiti-on to the new pay-out system,” he said.
Grant delays a ‘glitch’

En my God sal in elke behoefte van julleryklik voorsien volgens Sy wonderbaarlikerykdom in Christus Jesus. Filippense 4:19
When would allarrive alive? At last count, almost 200 people had beenkilled on South African roads over theEaster weekend, 13 of them in the WesternCape.
Although this figure is down comparedto 2011, this in no way minimises the im-pact from loss of lives.
Easter is a time of worship for Christi-ans celebrating the resurrection of Jesus,it is a joyous time to spend with family andfriends; not intended for mourning.
On 3 April, Western Cape minister oftransport and public works Robin Carlisleexpressed his hope for no fatalities in theprovince on the roads at Easter. This wasnot to be.
While the authorities have done every-thing in their power – from Operation Exo-dus to the Arrive Alive Road Safety Cam-paign – to keep South Africans safe on theroads, the same cannot be said of the moto-rists.
The primary and ultimate responsibili-ty rests with the person entrusted behindthe wheel. Every driver is well aware ofthe murderous implications of drivingdrunk, speeding and driving unroadwort-hy vehicles, yet many, in the foolhardy be-lief that “it will never happen to me”, risktheir lives, that of their passengers and in-nocent fellow motorists.
Next Easter, can we turn Carlisle’s hopeof zero road fatalities into a reality?

SLICE OF LIFESLICE OF LIFE
Pic proves pollutionis not ‘normal’With regards to TygerBurger’s 4 April articleentitled “Pollution within limits?” in relati-on to the Chevron Refinery:
I took this picture on Monday, 2 April, onmy way to gym in Table View along KoebergRoad while I sat in traffic. Surely the assu-rances they are giving us with regards to airpollution being within normal limits is inac-curate!
The thick, black smoke, which resembledoil burning, billowed from the smoke stackand carried on for at least five minutes.
The smoke continuously formed a blackcloud. Because I was in traffic I was able tosee firsthand how the wind took the smokeas I moved along Koeberg Road, down intoBlaauwberg Road and then into Gie Road. Itmoved over the neighbourhoods of TableView and Parklands and then dispersedright over the homes. So according to Che-vron this is perfectly normal and within li-mits. Surely not!
Another thing that always confuses me: I
work in Montague Gardens and live in Dur-banville, so I drive past the refinery on Plat-tekloof Road every day.
I noticed the air pollution monitor units onoccasions – always in the parking lot in therefinery or along the perimeter fence closeto or in the refinery itself. Surely these unitsshould be located in the suburbs of TableView and Parklands and Montague Gardenssurrounding the refinery monitoring the im-pact of their pollution?
I can without a doubt say one thing, andthis is just from my personal observationsonly as a private citizen. Over the past 12 ye-ars of driving to work and home and past therefinery every day, twice a day, I have seena marked increase in the amount of smoke/pollution that is being emitted from the refi-nery into the air. As of late it’s almost as ifthere is a permanent haze around the areaof the refinery.
COLIN FERGUSONEmail
I have lived on Blaauwberg Road, TableView for the past five years. A month aftermoving into Table View in March 2007, Iwrote an article complaining about thesmell in the area and the symptoms I wasexperiencing. At the time I was not awarethat this was from Chevron. My eyeswouldburnandwater andmychestwouldclose up for no reason at all. Up until thatpoint, I had never suffered from asthmaor a bad chest. I was 44 years of age at thetime. At the time, I was advised that Che-vron would be in contact with me. Theynever contacted me. I went through a fewverybadmonthshealthwise after that andeventually, I was diagnosed with asthma.
What I fail to understand is that whenI am out of the area my chest is fine, butwhen back at home, my chest closes upand I also now suffer with hayfever.
Upon arriving home at 22:40 last night(3 April), there was once again the mosthorrific, strong sulphur type smell in theair. This is not the first time we have expe-rienced this. This occurrence is pretty re-gular and mostly late at night. I think it’stime for Chevron to be honest with the pu-blic as to how much of this rubbish theyare spewing into the air on a regular basisand what they intend doing to clean uptheir act.
Once again, I have to point out the obvi-ous and that is, that this affects the elder-ly, babies, people with respiratory pro-blems and causes permanent respiratoryproblems in otherwise healthy people.
DEBBIE ENGELBRECHTTable View
Chevron, behonest!
I don’t feel sorry for the young men withtheir excessively loud car music systems, the fact that they don’t have the personali-ty to attract attention any other way orthat they face a future of deafness.
I feel sorry for those people on night du-ty who struggle to sleep during the day,the nurses, doctors, police officers and allthe others whose reflexes may be a littleslower because some idiot’s inconsidera-tion has not allowed them to get enoughsleep. I also wonder, as there is a by-lawto control this noise, why the police arenot more reactive?
JEN BADERMilnerton
Where are the police?

The Western Cape health depart-ment has embarked on an influ-enza vaccination campaign, which is taking place at all pub-lic health facilities until Sunday30 June.
A total of 100 000 vaccine dosesare available for this campaign andhave been allocated to all districts.
The vaccine is provided free ofcharge.
People who are part of the priori-ty groups are encouraged to go totheir nearest health facility to re-quest the vaccination.
Through receiving the vaccine, people living in the Western Capecanbuild stronger immune systemsand protect themselves against“flu” during this winter.
Priority groups include:. Adults or children at high risk
for influenza-related complicationsbecause of underlying medical con-ditions such as chronic pulmonary
disease (including asthma), cardio-vascular disease (except hyperten-sion), renal, hepatic, neurologic,haematologic or metabolic disor-ders (including diabetes mellitus),morbid obesity and immuno-sup-pression (including HIV-infectedpersons);
. Pregnant women – irrespectiveof stage of pregnancy;
. Children aged six months tofour years (59 months);
. Residents of old-age (nursing)homes and other chronic care or re-habilitation facilities;
. Children aged six months to 18years on long-term aspirin therapy;and
. All persons aged 65 years andolder.
Theuns Botha, Western Capehealth minister says; “The vaccina-tion campaign forms part of ourstrategy to boost people’s immunesystems, so that their bodies areless vulnerable to disease. Our long-
term aim is to increase wellness, that is a society where people arehealthy and strong and able to go towork every day and live the lifethey value. ‘Flu’ vaccinations areonly steps on that road, but buildingblocks towards a healthier society. So make use of this opportunitythat ourhealth services offer so thatwe can be better together.”
The aim of the campaign is tohighlight the need for vaccinationbefore and during the flu seasonand to ensure that available vac-cines are utilised.
The outcome of the campaign isto reduce influenza-related morbid-ity and mortality and to reduce thetransmission of the influenza viruswithin communities.
Not everyone is at risk of severedisease, therefore, not everyoneneeds to be vaccinated against thecurrent strain of influenza. Otherpreventative measures include:
. Avoiding close contact:
Avoid close contact with peoplewho are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others.
. Practising other good health
habits: Get plenty of sleep, be phys-ically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutri-tious food.
Health dept offers flu vaccines for free
It is a good idea to get a ‘flu’ injection to prevent influenza.

Your pet could be just what thejudges are looking for in theSPCA Royal Canin Mutt and Me-ow of the Year online pet photocompetition.
This competition runs fromthis week to Monday 21 May andaims to help hundreds of home-less pets by finding the most-loved and adored cat and dog on-line.
An adaptation of the Cape ofGood Hope (CoGH) SPCA’s pop-ular Mutt of the Year competi-tion, which was held annuallyfor 15 years, the new online com-petition makes it possible formany more dogs to stand achance of winning the covetedMutt of the Year title and for thefirst time gives cat-lovers an op-portunity to brag about their fe-line friends in the new Meow ofthe Year category.
“Unlike traditional pet compe-titions which reward dogs andcats with fancy pedigrees andpure-bred characteristics, thiscompetition will celebrate theunconditional love and specialcompanionship between petowners and their canine and fe-line friends, regardless of theirbreed,” said CoGH SPCA com-munications and resource devel-opment manager, Sarah Scarth.
The competition also aims tohelp hundreds of stray and aban-doned animals not as fortunateas those being entered for the ti-
tles of Mutt and Meow of theYear, by encouragingpet ownersto get their friends and family tovote and donate online to theCoGH SPCA.
“It’s really easy to enter andwith the help of Facebook youcan encourage your friends tovote for your pet and at the sametime raise funds for the CoGHSPCA,” said Royal Canin mar-keting manager, Tarryn Day.
Judges will be looking for thatextra special connection be-tween an owner and their dog orcat. “We want to show that res-cued animals, whether mixed-breed or pedigree, make treas-ured companions,” she says.
The four competition prizecategories include the Mutt ofthe Year and Meow of the Year, which is open to all cats and dogsand the Mutt Top Fundraiserand Meow Top Fundraiser, which will be awarded to the petand owner who through theirvotes (each vote is just a R1 dona-tion) raises the most amount ofmoney for the CoGH SPCA.

After a recent name and line-up change,Silent Side are gearing up to launch theirdebut album, Unbroken, on Saturday.
Music fans may know the band as Skye-clad, the name they were using until theydiscovered a European band with the samename.
When TygerBurger interviewed the bandin 2009, they had just enjoyed considerablesuccess on the Mxit Music playlist.
Since then, Bonita van Wyk (vocals andacoustic), Ray Schoeman (rhythm guitar)and Paul Anagnostakis (lead guitar) havebeen working with their new drummer, MattCatto and new bassist, Darion Garisch.
They have been teaching new memberstheir songs, and of course, recording their al-bum.
“The recording process has been obnox-iously long,” Ray says, adding: “We wantedit to be perfect.”
By obnoxiously long, Ray means that theytook a year and a half to record Unbroken, but conflicting work schedules have alsomade it a little more difficult to record the
album in a normal time-frame.Unbroken was recorded at HeyPapaLeg-
end Studios and was produced by Ross andMyles McDonald and Hannes Burger.
Paul says now that they have the album, they can start sending it off to radio stationsand use it for marketing the band.
Bonita refers to silent Side’s music as“emotional, melodic, rock”.
“It sounds weird, but it’s because thereisn’t a genre for it yet,” Ray says, beforequickly pointing out: “Please not that we arenot emo.”
Although they recorded an EP, Listen, un-der their old name, Unbroken is Silent Side’sfirst full-length album.
They will be launching it at Banned RockLounge in Table View on Saturday. GerhardBurger, the band’s ex-drummer will be doingan opening set, before Chris Tait and Row-land Gutsche warm the stage.
Entrance is R20. CDs will be on sale at thelaunch for R100. The band will be selling thealbum privately for now and are looking atputting it online. To listen to songs from thealbum, visit their pages on Reverbnation orSoundcloud. Visit their Facebook page or fol-low them on Twitter.

DANKIE KAAPSTAD! VYFJAARPLAN (GOP) - 2012/2013 - 2016/2017Kaapstad vra weer jou kommentaar

A young local motocross rider isintent on keeping his hopes of anational title alive when he com-petes in his own backyard laterthis month.
Nine-year-old Justin Sangster on-ce again proved he is the man to be-at by setting a new South Africanlap record at the second round ofthe Full Throttle/WOMZA nationalmotocross championship that washeld in Bloemfontein on 24 March.
Sangster won both his heats atthe Shavron motocross track secu-ring him the top podium place. Thevictory provides him with a reas-onable cushion and a 13-point leadahead of the Cape Town nationalwhich takes place on 28 April at theMelkbos motocross track.
The young man from Bergvlietwill certainly be hard to beat on hishome track which is sandy andsuits his riding style.
At the Bloemfontein event the Ca-pe Town riders in the 50cc groupproved their worth with four ridersfinishing in the top ten. Chris Eras-mus finished fifth, Calum Marriottseventh and Oliver Glover ninth.
The only other rider to achieve atop five position was Anthony Ray-nard who earned a respectable fifthplace in the MX2 250cc class. Ray-nard, who set the fastest lap time inpractise, could just not withstandthe onslaught of the current SAchampion Kerim Fitzgerald whowon the class quite comfortably.
. Round three of the national mo-tocross championship will be hos-ted by the Cape Town MotocrossClub on 28 April at the Melkbos MXtrack on the R27. For further infor-mation email [email protected].
Justin sets SA lap record

After making a reasonable debut in theTygerberg league last year, the women’steam of Sunningdale Football Club is ge-ared to finish top of log this season.
Last year Sunningdale had a pool of only13 girls to make up a team – at the start ofpreseason training a month ago, 38 playersreported for duty.
“Last year there were only three girls whohad played football before, some of theothers had never touched a football in theirlife,” says Sunningdale coach Warren Jo-nes.
The lack of experience in the side was ob-vious as Sunningdale suffered some big los-ses in their first games with a score of 7-0not being uncommon. “But the girls foughtback well and we finished mid-table,” Jonessays.
Despite many of them being new to the ga-me, the team only lost one player due to inju-ry. “Our goalkeeper tried to save a ball andfell on her back. She had to quit the seasonbut apart from that nothing,” Jones says, nodding to some of the more slender girlsdribbling the ball on the field.
The great number of players has allowedthe club to enter a second team into the lea-gue this season. “There is a good spiritamong the girls. Last season the girls drewmore spectators than the senior sides. Idon’t know whether it was the legs in theteam,” he says with a grin.
The ages of the players range from 15 to29. “Last season we had a mother of five onthe pitch, an American. Her husband sho-wedupwith the childrenat the field oneday. When I asked her about it, I found out shehad her youngest child only five weeks ear-lier.”
The first league matches of the seasonkicks off this coming Friday (13 April).
Sunningdale will be competing againstBothasig, Durbanville, Table View, Tram-way, UCT, KLM Football Factory, Vasco daGama, SAP, Fish Hoek and Edgemead.
