Schoolchildren in the Milnerton areaare being targeted by a gang of armedrobbers, but the local police and crime

fighting bodies are hot on the evildoers’heels.According to Milnerton police spokesper-

son, W/O Daphne Dell, the armed robberswould drive around the neighbourhood andlook for children who are walking homefrom school. The perpetrators would thenapproach the child, threaten them and stealvaluable technology from the defencelessvictim.In the latest case, five Milnerton High

learners were walking in Beaufort Road onMonday when three suspects stopped nextto them in a dark silver Volkswagen Poloand robbed them of their belongings.School principal Paul Besener says the

suspects aimed a gun “or something thatlooked like a gun” at the learners.

He elaborates: “Wehave safe roads aroundthe school, but once learners leave the ‘well-trodden path’ then they are vulnerable.”

SyndicateThere was to be an intensive operation

this week Tuesday by the police to appre-hend the suspects, but at the time of goingto press nothing had been reported on thatfront.Besener isworried that the suspectsmight

be part of a syndicate and that arrests policemake could just displace the location of at-tacks. Dell, however, refuses at this stage tosay whether police suspect a syndicate.She does not shy away from giving advice

Insofar as non­profit organisations go, Eric Miles Cheshire Home is one of the leading lights whenit comes to renewable energy.

The solar panels at Eric Miles CheshireHome in Milnerton were officially handedover on Monday.The 252 polycrystalline panels were in-

stalled earlier this year, but the handingover ceremony was only held this week.Karen van der Wath, a carbon and energy

management consultant and the project de-veloper, says that the system will produceapproximately 98 000 KWhs per annum.In amonthly consumption graph supplied

by Van der Wath, it is revealed that in thesummer months the home’s proposed sav-ings will be on average R10 000 per monthand in the winter approximately R5 000.She adds: “Due to the City of Cape Town

regulations that currently do not allow forfeed-in or net-metering, the plant will needactive monitoring and automated throttlingas designed by Solsquare, who was awardedthe tender.”It is envisaged that the project will have

a payback period of between seven and eightyears.Alet Bosman, the manager of Eric Miles

Cheshire Home, says the project is part ofan ongoing drive to reduce the amount of en-ergy consumed as well as reducing operat-ing costs to ensure sustainability. She in-vites all interested parties to come and viewthe solar system installation.The system will only be operating from

June.

Amassive new R121 million electricalskills training centre is set to open itsdoors in Brackenfell come April next

year.Funded by the City of Cape Town, con-

struction has already started on the premis-es behind the traffic department and fire bri-

gade and the modern building should becomplete by January 2014.A long-time vision of the city, this centre

will finally house all the apprenticeship pro-grammes, which were reinstated by the cityin 2008, training young electricians for a ca-reer in the industry.According to project manager Warren

Kindo, the first intake in 2014 will accept 100

applicants who have completed their insti-tutional training for the two-year long ap-prenticeship. Thereafter, 100 applicants willbe enrolled each year, to double up the ca-pacity.

Trained staff“After completing the apprenticeship the

electricians will work for the City of CapeTown. The city will first train up enoughstaff to satisfy its own need and thereafterwe want to flood the market in the WesternCape with trained electrical personnel,” hesays.The centre will also partner up with Es-

kom in terms of training insofar as differentskills levels are concerned.“The city will handle the lower and medi-

um voltage training while Eskom will takecare of the high voltage,” he says, ensuringa comprehensive cover of training.According to head of training Selwyn

Scholtz, the 4 440 square metre multi-levelbuildingwill house three bigworkshops are-as for practical training and a testing centre.Outside the building there will be an over-head line training facility between the na-ture reserve and fire station.“We are also planning an outside gym to

ensure our trainees are fit in body andmind,” he says.Hopefuls for this programme will be able

He came, he soared, he tinkered.The ever optimistic Matt Silver-Vallance

attempted the ludicrous stunt to drift calm-ly fromRobben Islandwestward to the coastwhile being attached to 160 helium-filledballoons on Saturday.He drifted, but not particularly calmly

though.Matt’s pellet gunwasn’t powerful enough

to pop the balloons in order to descend...Thankfully Bob Dylan was right when hesang: “The answer, my friend, is blowing inthe wind”.This answer was to manually drag the

balloons closer towards him whilst air-borne so that he could pierce them by usinga makeshift long handled knife.If not for this, Matt might still be drifting,

probably somewhere above the IndianOcean.The flight, which has been planned for

nigh on four years, was organised to raiseR10 million towards the building of the Nel-son Mandela Children’s Hospital in Gau-teng.There was no fixed date for the stunt, but

last week Thursday the team got the go-ahead for the Saturday when it was fore-casted that a gentle wind would blow in anorth-easterly direction and that itwouldn’t start raining.

Mist and rainThat morning the wind blew in a south-

easterly direction and the mist and rain al-most spoiled the party.Of course, the weatherman was nowhere

to be seen.In a perfect world Matt was supposed to

land just beyond the breakers at Eden onthe Bay, but the cantankerous wind insteadcarried him to Sunset Beach –more than anhour after he lifted off from Robben Islandat 11:45.The social network, Twitter, was both a

blessing and a curse for those who had ac-cess to it.Some 20 minutes before he touched down

it was tweeted thatMatt is heading towardsSunset Beach.An army of journalists and photogra-

phers raced to their vehicles andwere stuckin traffic until the tweet came through thatMatt has landed and will head towardsEden on the Bay with the boat crew.This news was greeted with several exas-

perated u-turns on Marine Drive.At long-last Matt arrived at Eden on the

Bay on a rubber motorboat.Fervent journalists – armed with camer-

as, notebooks and voice recorders – flockedaround the visibly drained “Balloonman”.Matt confirmed at that moment that he

will not be answering any questions beforethe de-briefing in half-an-hour...The tease!TygerBurger’s pre-flight interview with

him,whichwas printed in lastweek’s TableView andMilnerton editions, stated that hewould be using the “best bb gun in theworld” to shoot the balloons when he need-ed to descend.

‘This was serious’Patience was never my forté, so I jumped

the gun, introduced myself and asked Matthow the best bb gun in the world workedfor him.He put his arm around my shoulder and

said: “Dude! It didn’t! That bb gun was sto-len from me on Friday night!”Suffice to say he didn’t want to elaborate

further.It was later revealed that at his highest

point during the flight, Matt soared 1 000metres above sea level, before landing 300

metres offshore fromSunsetBeach,MouillePoint.Says Matt: “After lift-off, I soon realised

that this was not a scene out of a movie –this was serious.“The fairytale landing that we had envi-

sioned where I would drift gently down infront of the crowdsatEdenon theBaydidn’tmaterialise. I am, however, overjoyed thatwe managed to successfully complete themission.”With the “Balloon Run” completed, the

Those who constantly live in flux between“desperate need” and “enormous gratitude”have plenty to worry about.

Walking around without shoes is just oneof these issues.

If one juxtaposes this with the fact thatmany have too many shoes in their cup-board then their need becomes absurd.

This is why the Toms and SALT drive on16 April known as “One day without shoes”is so important.

For one day, those who can afford it cango about their daily tasks without wearingshoes and also donate a pair or two to SALTfor distribution among those who need it.TygerBurger spoke to SALT admin man-

ager, Sandra Warne, about the much-antici-pated day. She sums it up succinctly when

she says: “We take something simple suchas shoes for granted and we should help oth-ers as much as possible.”

According to her, businesses and individ-uals in the community must make a pointof doing something for “social justice”.

“It is really about creating awareness forthe need out there. One can donate shoeswith us at Bayside Centre between 12 and 16April and there will also be a drop-off pointat the View Church in Table View,” she ex-plains.

SALT will distribute the shoes in variouscommunities around the Western Cape.

This very day – 16 April – is an internation-ally recognised day, so Warne urges every-one to get involved.

She says that one can upload their pic-tures to SALT’s Facebook page or alterna-tively onto their own page.

Many met at Milnerton Lighthouse, Sun-set Beach, Bloubergstrand andMelkbos andbrought with them loads of smiles and en-thusiasm.Says organiser Greg Player: “We had sun-

shine, mist, a bit of wind and some drizzle,so thank you to all who braved the weather!

Having families come down to the beach andspend time together is always an inspirationand one of the many success stories of thecleanups.”The next one will be on 4 May.

Be the voice of the dwindling rhino

Breathtaking paintings greeted shoppers atSeaside Village shopping mall this weekend.

The “social art exhibition” served twopurposes – one of aesthetics and one of phi-lanthropy.

A substantial portion of the profit made byartists (should they sell a piece) would go tothe “I will be your voice” initiative, whichwas started by South African singer, Ro-zanne Visagie.

After months of logistical research and fi-nally finding an empathy with South Afri-can and overseas event planners and project

managers, the “I will be your voice” cam-paign was born.

The initiative aims to organise a numberof rhino-related fundraising events, and infuture will support various conservation fo-cused beneficiaries.

The money raised at the art exhibition,which was originally Michele Batchelder’sidea, will go to the Chipembere Rhino Foun-dation, which provides tangible equipment,technology, information and relocation as-sistance to rhino reserves.TygerBurger went past the shopping cen-

tre on Saturday to hear why Rozanne startedthis initiative.

The answer becomes apparent when onehears how passionately she speaks aboutrhinos.

“Thandi the rhino was at death’s doorstep.Poachers cut into her snout to get herhorn...”

She points to another picture on hermounting board and continues: “This calf’smother was thrown off a cliff by poachers.While she was dying her calf tried to drinkmilk from her.

“Then the poachers hit the calf on herhead with pangas... Thankfully she wassaved. The whole episode leaves me sick tothe stomach. Some 203 rhino have died to

poachers this year alone! Last year 668 rhinodied and if things continue like this then wewill have a negative growth rate by 2015.”

The next event by “I will be your voice”will be held on 8 June at the Mount NelsonHotel. Freshlyground will be performingduring the elegant gala evening and Dr WillFowlds will be the keynote speaker.

Tickets cost R800 per person, which in-cludes a three-course dinner a fundraiserauction and a concert.

With the City of Cape Town’s Liquor Trad-ing Days and Hours Bylaw having come intoeffect this month, the city’s Liquor Enforce-ment Unit conducted focused operations lastWednesday night.

The unit inspected 67 off-consumptionpremises in Goodwood, Parow, Bellville,Durbanville, Kuils River and Brackenfell.Of the premises inspected, 63 were found tobe compliant with the bylaw.

Four written warning notices were issuedto establishments for not complying with the

trading hours stipulated, as per their locationcategory.

There is a focus on issuing warnings andfines before taking more drastic action, sothat establishments are given an opportunityto rectify any faults.

The Liquor Enforcement Unit will continueto conduct inspections and create awarenessaround the bylaw in residential and businessareas across Cape Town.

The City of Cape Town’s Liquor TradingDays and Hours Bylaw came into effect on 1

April.Anyone trading in liquor must therefore

abide by the new trading hours from 1April, regardless of the type of licence theyhold.

This comes after extensive communica-tion and engagement with a range of stake-holders about how best to oversee thehours within which liquor may be sold.

As part of the city’s commitment to sup-porting the entertainment and hospitalitysector, which is an important economicmultiplier in the city, the city has createda special exemption for licensed premiseswhich currently sell liquor for consump-tion on site.

The default trading hours for the sale ofliquor on licensed premises in the bylaw

is 02:00, but premises can apply for an exten-sion until 04:00.

This exemption only applies to licensedpremises in areas that are zoned for busi-ness or industrial use. This exemption wasspecifically created to ensure that traderswho operate in prominent entertainmentdistricts that are correctly zoned are not lim-ited to the default trading hours, but may ap-ply for an exemption.

The following requirements are outlinedin the bylaw:

V The implementation of revised tradinghours for the sale of liquor for consumptionon licensed premises (such as restaurants,bars and clubs).

Mark Labrum’s letter “Makingus into a Godless society”(TygerBurger, 3 April) refers.It would be difficult to justify

the death sentence for all rapevia the Old Testament, whichdescribes a patriarchal societythat practiced polygamy andslavery, and a virgin who wasraped had to marry her rapist(Deuteronomy 22:28). MrLabrum seems to blame“liberal academics” for rape,crime and godlessness, as ifFreud, Marx or Darwin madethe world meaningless and canbe taught without historicalcontext and critique.It is uncertain what religious

instruction Mr Labrum wouldlike to see imposed on univer-sities. Perhaps that faithhealing should be taught inmedical faculties? As an anti-death penaltyactivist all my life, MarkLabrum’s letter (Making usinto Godless society, Tyger-Burger, 3 April) jerked me intoaction.The only one worthy to be

followed is Christ Jesus whotaught us that Moses said aneye for an eye and a tooth fora tooth, but I tell you that youmust love even your enemy.The death penalty will not

change anything, in fact it willonly make matters worse.We had the death penalty in

our country before. But it waseventually used to convict evenpolitical people...When we say this is a

Christian country, becausemore than 70 % of its citizensare Christians, then surelythey should also take theblame for most of our crime.There is not a single country

in the world where the deathpenalty is in operation thatcan call itself free and demo-cratic. The death penalty canonly succeed where there isfear, hatred and unforgiveness,things that Christ warns us aredeadly sins.Anyone that supports the

death penalty, is a potentialmurderer themselves.

Recently, there have beenletters in the TygerBurgerabout forcing drivers to stop atstop streets.In March, I did a survey with

a total of 98 cars at five differ-ent stop streets and found thatonly one car actually stopped.At four-way stop streets thecars stopped only if there werecars at the other stop streets,but did not stop if the otherstop streets were clear.This means that 99 % of

drivers do not stop at stopstreets.There is an enormous differ-

ence between not stopping at astop street, and driving atspeed through a stop street.This should not be confused.Two policemen were killed

recently by someone drivingthrough a stop street.Enforcing drivers to stop at

stop streets will not eliminatethe driving through accidents.

Once again I would just like towarm residents in the Tyger-berg and surrounding areaabout a scam. I recently boughtsome blue bin bags from therobot vendors at the entranceto Willowbridge.They offered me a special

price if I buy two packets. Itwas R20 for 40 blue bags andR30 for two packets. When wearrived home, we realised thatthey had rolled three bagstogether and then wrapped afew more around it to look likea full packet. Altogether I got20 bags instead of the promised80.They (street vendors) are

selling themselves short bycrooking people, as more andmore people will never buy anygoods from them again.

trict 1 Games Day, which was organised bythe City of Cape Town’s Department of SportandRecreation and theDistrict 1 sport coun-cil (DSC).These two bodies also provided snacks

and cooldrink for the participants last week.Chairperson of DSC James Mills, elabo-

rates on the format: “Each division in thedistrict has its own games and then the bestare selected to compete inDistrict 1’s games,which was held on Friday.“The best of these teamswill then compete

against the other five districts on 27 April– most likely in Kraaifontein.

“Then the best team in each code will beselected.”The objective of the games is to encourage

It’s been a career filledwithhighlights andfond memories dating back to 1959 whereit all began for James Bezuidenhout.Last year James, now living in Bellville

for some time, received an honorary hon-ours lifetime achievement award from theSouth African Wrestling Federation.“From the moment I started amateur

wrestling I fell in love with the sport. Ittaught me a great deal about life. About per-severance, respect for yourself and others,”James said.His career started under the guidance of

coach Hansie Theunissen at the Queens-burgh Wrestling Club in Durban.

Determined“I was wrestling for three years without

a win, I just couldn’t get that first win underthe belt. It just made me more determinedto work harder,” he said.“I will never forget that day I wonmy first

match. It was also the first match my momwasable towatchmeon themat.When Iwonthe feeling was indescribable. Needless tosay it was even more special sharing it withmy mother.”James went on to become a Natal champi-

on.He represented Natal for many years in

various capacities from juniorwrestler, sen-ior wrestler, coach, official, secretary, treas-urer and head coach.In 1982 a new chapter began right here in

Cape Town, Parow to be more exact, wherehe was until 2005 part of Western Provincewrestling.In 1984 he was the founder of the Parow

Wrestling Club and head coach.He was the chairman ofWestern Province

from 1983 to 2005.
