Not only was Clover waste that was intend-ed for pigs sold as food to poor communities,but according to a source within the compa-ny, stolen fresh produce left the distribu-tion centre in Bellville in the same way.

Some of the plant’s senior managementwas implicated in the scam as well, an em-ployee alleges.

Clover twice terminated their contractwith the recycler initially tasked with re-moving and carting away their rotten pro-duce, which was to be removed to designat-ed pig farms, but instead was sold to thepoor on the Cape Flats.

Clover has, since the first article ap-peared in TygerBurger (“Recycler sells oldfood”, 5 August) launched a full-scale inves-tigation into these and other allegationsabout the recycling company’s fraud.

Since that article, however, the employeehas contacted TygerBurger to raise con-cerns that Clover was being robbed in broaddaylight of its fresh produce.

These items were apparently leaving thedistribution centre hidden and neatly

packed – right under the liquid waste in-tended for the pig farms in the same drums.

As soon as the items left, they were soonrepackaged and resold, as reported earlier.

The source tells of an incident on Tuesday25 August which sparked a fresh bout of sus-picion among himself and colleagues.

“On Tuesday 25 August a security guardwas checking the drums leaving the distri-bution centre with his stick. He stuck it in,and when he took it out, he had impaled ablock of fresh cheese that was at the bottomof the drum,” the source alleges.

“When he stuck the stick in the secondtime, he found there was more fresh stuffat the bottom, beneath all the milky yuck.The security guard then asked the pig farmemployee [who was in charge of removingthose drums] to call her supervisor.”

According to the source, what happenednext was that a senior manager at the Clo-ver plant stepped in. This manager is saidto have inspected the drum, and when thesecurity guard was about to remove morefresh produce, allegedly stopped the guard.

“Within a week, the Fidelity guard wasre-assigned to a different distribution cen-tre and sent away from the Clover plant!”

the source says.The source further claims there is a food

store in Parow Industria selling the stolenClover produce to the public. The shop is ap-parently “situated near the Peninsula Bev-erages plant, just past the Parmalat build-ing, he says. “It’s Clover’s bacon being soldthere,” he says.

Clover responded to a media enquiry cit-ing they were still conducting and are in theprocess of concluding their full-scale inves-tigation into the allegations of fraud andtheft at its Bellville plant. They confirmedto TygerBurger that illegal activity has tak-en place at their Cape Town operations thatresulted in a case being opened with theSouth African Police Service. Clover said itwas seriously concerned about the allega-tions quoted in the article, especially inlight of their quality and internal controlsystems implemented.

“There are internal risk systems to reportunlawful activity to deal with these issuesthrough an anonymous whistle blower hot-line,” said spokesperson Morné Reinders.

“The company is committed to maintain-ing the highest standard of quality and in-ternal control mechanisms.”

More drama at Clover dairy plant

Die Brackenfell-polisie het Maandag ’n ha-welose man op die Brackenfell-stasie in heg-tenis geneem vir die besit van tien sakkiestik met ’n straatwaarde van R500.

“Konstt. Rouan Scheepers en Johan Han-

sen was besig met misdaadvoorkomingspa-trollies toe hulle ’n verdagte in Morgenster-hoogte deursoek en dwelms aan sy persoongevind het,” sê ao. Erica Crous, woordvoer-der van die Brackenfell-polisie.

“Verdere ondersoek het polisie gelei nadie verdagte by die stasie, wat in besit wasvan die dwelms,” sê sy.

Die 30-jarige hawelose man is in hegtenisgeneem en aangekla vir besit van dwelms.

“Ons vermoed dat hy op die stasie handeldryf, maar kon hom nie vir onwettige han-del arresteer nie, omdat ons dit nie kan be-wys nie.”

Die man sal vandeesweek in die Kuilsri-vier-landdroshof verskyn.

Hy voeg by dat die kubermisdadigers niedie banke se stelsels teiken nie, maar dieverbruiker s’n.

“Hulle teiken die swakste punt in die ket-ting – ek en jy.”

Van Solms sê hyself gebruik uitsluitliknet twee rekenaars om sy internetsake tebehartig. Sy rekenaar by die werk, wat kor-poratief deur baie gesofistikeerde program-me beskerm word, en die rekenaarportaalbinne-in die bank self.

“Ek sal nie eens my skootrekenaar in mystudeerkamer by die huis gebruik om bank-sake op te doen nie,” het hy in ’n telefonieseonderhoud vir TygerBurger gesê.

Van Solms is van mening dat banke in diealgemeen meer verantwoordbaar gehoumoet word.

“Die bank se redenasie is dat jy as ver-bruiker jou wagwoord en pinnommer moetbeskerm; en dat jou rekening slegs ‘ge-kraak’ kan word indien dié inligting gekom-promiteer word. Daarom aanvaar hulle niesommer aanspreeklikheid nie,” sê hy.

Dis egter ’n “catch 22”, sê Van Solms, juisomdat die bank nie aan die verbruiker kanbewys dat hy bo enige twyfel nalatig wasnie, en die verbruiker self ook nie die teen-deel aan die bank kan bewys nie.

“In meeste gevalle is die verbruiker selfnie eens bewus daarvan dat sy inligting on-wettig bekom is deur een of ander aanhan-gels oop te maak nie. Maak dit hom dan wet-tig aanspreeklik?”

Hy is van mening dat Suid-Afrikaansewetgewing met betrekking tot kubermis-daad kan verbeter.

Die Wetsontwerp op Kubermisdaad en Se-kerheid is verlede week deur die regeringvrygestel vir openbare insette.

Die wetsontwerp sal onder meer maat-reëls instel om kubermisdaad in Suid-Afri-ka te beveg.

“Dit maak onder meer voorsiening vir ’n24/7-sentrum waar enige kubermisdaad ge-rapporteer kan word, maar ek moet egterwonder waar en hoe die regering voldoendemenslike hulpbronne gaan bekom om ditwerkbaar te maak,” sê Van Solms en voegby dat die polisie in die verlede al weerloos-heid in die verband erken het.

Brig. Piet Pieterse, hoof van die Valke seelektroniese misdaad-eenheid, sê dat baiemeer bewusmaking onder lede van die pu-bliek benodig word in terme van kubervei-

ligheid.Pieterse self was ook nou betrokke met

die bogenoemde wetsontwerp.“Daar is ’n menigte maniere waarop ’n

kubermisdadiger jou inligting kan verkry.Meeste van die tyd word ’n virus deur ’ne-pos aangestuur. Dit staan bekend as ‘phis-hing’. Die oomblik wat jy die aanhangseloopmaak, het hullejou en kan sodoen-de alles sien wat opjou rekenaar ge-beur. So kan hullejou internetbank-wagwoord en sel-foonrekeningbe-sonderhede be-kom, wat hullegebruik om jousimkaart elektro-nies te kloon.

Dit word beno-dig om begunstig-des op jou reke-ning te skep en diewagwoord te be-kom wat die bankeenmalig vir jouper SMS stuur so-dra jy ’n bedraggeld in ’n ander re-kening wil oor-plaas,” verduide-lik hy.

In ander gevallekan ’n misdadigerook ’n “sim swop” doen by ’n handelaar metbehulp van ’n vervalste ID-dokument.

“Die beste manier om jouself te beskermteen kubermisdadigers is om ten volle endeurentyd bewus van risiko’s te wees,” hetPieterse in ’n telefoniese onderhoud vir Ty-gerBurger gesê.

“Die kubermisdadiger kon dalk ’n jaar te-rug jou wagwoord bekom het en hou nou jourekening dop vir groot bedrae geld om inbe-taal te word,” sê hy. Volgens hom is dit ookmoontlik dat so ’n sindikaat toegang het totpersoneel binne banke, selfoonverskaffersen groot versekeraars het. Pieterse is ookvan mening dat speurders oraloor sulkemisdadigers kan vastrek indien hulle diekorrekte ondersoekmetodiek verstaan.

“Die Brackenfell-polisie het al in die ver-lede suksesse gehad met internetbedrogsa-ke, maar uit die aard van die saak neem so’n ondersoek baie lank,” verduidelik ao.Erica Crous, woordvoerder van die Brac-

kenfell-polisie. “Baie inligting moet inge-win word en die polisie moet soms aansoekdoen vir meer as net een lasbrief om diebetrokke inligting by die banke te bekom.”

Volgens Crous moet daar elke keer ’n Ar-tikel 205-aansoek voor die hof gebring wordom so ’n lasbrief te bekom.

“In terme van die lasbrief het die bankdan twee maandekans om die inlig-ting aan die polisievry te stel,” verdui-delik sy.

In die geval vaninternetbedrogmoet die banke diepolisie ook bystaanmet sekere inlig-ting om IP-adressena te speur.

Johan se saakword volgens Crousnog ondersoek endie polisie wag tansop ’n Artikel 205-lasbrief.

’n Woordvoerdervan Absa wat nie bydie naam genoemwil word nie, sê Ab-sa wil weer eens hulspyt uitspreek oordie verlies van Jo-han se geld.

“Ons het egter ’ndeeglike ondersoek

gedoen en bevind dat die kliënt sy elektro-niese bankbesonderhede gekompromiteerhet,” sê die woordvoerder.

“Die saak is na die ombudsman verwysen ons sal dié bevinding respekteer. Onsnoodsaak ons kliënte om nooit hul persoon-like bankbesonderhede vir enigiemand tegee nie, nie in persoon of telefonies nie. Jymoet ook nooit jou pinnommer neerskryfnie. Dis ook baie belangrik om jou pinnom-mer en wagwoord gereeld te verander omsogenoemde vertraagde kriminele aanvallete verhoed. Misdadigers bekom soms joubankbesonderhede lank voordat hulle toe-slaan.” Op navraag van TygerBurger konAbsa egter nie verduidelik hoe hulle vasge-stel het dat Johan nalatig was nie of hoeskuld aan hom toegewys kon word nie.

Three Kraaifontein youths were arrestedby Brackenfell police last Tuesday, follow-ing a high-speed car chase through townduring which two policemen narrowly es-caped injury.A spokesperson for the Brackenfell po-

lice, Warrant Officer Erica Crous, says po-lice received a tip-off about a drug consign-ment being transported to Brackenfell.“At 14:35W/OTheoVanDerRiel andCon-

stable Rouan Scheepers spotted a vehiclefitting the description in Old Paarl Road,Brackenfell,” says Crous.Onmoving closer to thevehicle to investi-

gate, it sped off in the direction of Ferndale,and officers persued.Crous says the vehicle skipped several

stop signs and traffic lights in an attemptto evade arrest.“Members also noticed the driver throw-

ing objects out of the car while speeding. InBrandCrescent, Cst JohanHansen attempt-ed to stop the vehicle, but the driver drovestraight at the officer, who had to jump outof his way to prevent being knocked over,”she says.The chase continued in Ferndale and

eventually back into Old Paarl Road, whileofficers were joined by Sergeant StephanWolfaardt and Cst Mariano Gioio.“The vehicle eventually attempted to en-

ter a complex in Bellville, where the driver,in an attempt to escape, tried to knock overCst Scheepers.”The driver, a 32-year-old man, was appre-

hended and charged with two counts of at-tempted murder, one count of reckless andnegligent driving and possession of tik.His two 18-year-old female passengers

were arrested on charges of possession oftik.Tik with a street value of approximately

R12 000 was confiscated.

Readers declare war against taxisDESIRÉE RORKE

A “reign of terror”, “anarchy”, a“growing epidemic of lawless inva-ders” and “absolute lawlessness”

are but a few of the terms used by fed-upmotorists to describe the general behavi-our of taxi drivers in the northern su-burbs.

In response to an article published inlast week’s edition (“City to get tough ontaxis”), dozens of readers responded withstrongly worded letters pleading with lo-cal and regional authorities to intervenespeedily.

The story referred to local city council-lor Roxanne Hoorn, who two weeks agobrought a motion to the City’s transportauthority to strategise plans to protectother road users from reckless taxidrivers after yet another serious inci-dent.

Hoorn herself was recently the victimof intimidation, nearly assaulted aftershe was forced to overtake a taxi on OldPaarl Road between Brackenfell andKraaifontein.

Taxi nightmareThe following are excerpts from some

of these letters:Hennie Cloete says the route on Old

Paarl Road between Kraaifontein andBellville is a nightmare.

“The public has complained about thisad nauseum, but nothing gets done. I’mhappy to hear that Ms Hoorn escaped in-jury, but why must a city councillor firstbecome a victim before the issue is putunder the spotlight?” he says.

Lean Sadie, from Bonnie Brae in Kraai-fontein, says she is sick and tired of thecontinuing lawlessness of taxi drivers.

“Theyblatantlydisregard the rules andsafety of all other roadusers. Taxi ownersshould drive their own taxis. This waythe owner can be the only responsibleperson and therefore be more carefulwith his very expensive vehicle.”

She makes no bones when she says:“The powers that be should grow a back-bone and be more vigilant with traffic of-fenders, especially drivers in possessionof a Public Drivers’ Permit.

“We need more traffic officers doing re-al traffic work and not sitting behindspeeding cameras. We need traffic offi-cers that continuously hold roadblockschecking vehicle roadworthiness and en-forcing the rules of the road. We are tax-payers and we demand that the powersthat be ... do what they are paid to do.”

Ian Coetzee feels it’s imperative for thecommunity to unite against the mayhemcaused by taxi drivers.

“Not longafter the saddeathof a daugh-ter of our community (in Brackenfell), weare back in the rat race with only a faintmemory of that terrible morning.

“Motorists are being blamed for racingdown Frans Conradie (Road), where per-manent speeding cameras are expected toregulate driving behaviour ... while taxidrivers are given a free pass to do whate-ver they feel right in order to performtheir ‘service’ to commuters,” he says.

“No respect is shown for other moto-rists, or even pedestrians, and when youtry to ‘correct’ them, theybecomeviolent,swinging their arms and swearing at youwhile your children are in the car.

“When is the City’s Law Enformentgoing to clamp down on this?” he asks.

Juliet Luthango from Kuils River, whouses Van Riebeeck Road on a daily basis,says she is happy that something mightfinally be done to reign in taxi driverswho without regard to the law have “ta-ken the roads for themselves.”

Amanda Smith says what happened toHoorn, must have happened to herselfabout 10 times already.

“The worst was when I was with myson. I can tell you with no hesitation thatif I (didn’t have a child in the car), I wouldhave done something that I would haveregretted terribly.

“Please, please, please, for the upteenthtime, stop these these taxi drivers whoare giving all a bad name!” she says.

ChantelleMinnaar suggests that trafficofficers be deployed on Old Paarl Roadduring peak hours, and Mariethie Hay-ley, who has used Old Paarl Road for thelast 15 years, agrees with her.

“The taxis are a major problem in theKraaifontein area, especially on OldPaarl Road turning into Northpine,” shewrites.

“They just burst in front of you to turnright into Northpine Drive, coming fromthe lane next to you, and there are neverany cops around,” says Minnaar.

One Lynette from Brackenfell, who re-gularly uses the route, says Old Paarl Ro-ad is very risky and not a pleasantdriving experience.

“You never know when you will be thenext victim of road rage, but you expectit at all times,” she says.

She adds most female drivers, especial-ly those with a child in the car, must have

felt intimidated or threatened at one timeor another.

“I have been in a situation more thanonce where I had to violate the rules ofthe road in order to ‘accommodate’ aruthless taxi driver.”

Often overloadedOne L Cloete agrees:“I drive on Old Paarl Road daily on my

way to work and you battle to keep calmbehind the steering wheel.

“What happened to councillor Hoorn isexactly what happens daily on this road.Commuters are forced to use taxis and donot have a choice. They cannot make useof trains, because the trains are constant-ly late and overcrowded,” she says.

Taxi commuter Amanda Gerds fromBellville adds that taxis are often overloa-ded.

“At the Bellville taxi rank, the ‘peoplein charge’ threaten you with your life orshout other obscenities. We once commu-ted in a taxi inwhich theyused chipboardto cover a hole in the floor so that youdon’t fall through.”

She reckons the traffic department is“useless” when it comes to clampingdown on dangerous and reckless taxidrivers.

“Theyneedundercover traffic cops androadblocks. The taxi drivers become cle-ver anddo their best to avoid getting stop-ped.”

Marietjie Haye sums it up aptly whenshe says: “As taxpayers who pay the sala-ries of traffic officers and Law Enforce-ment (officers), we demand help from thegovernment that we voted into power inthe Western Cape.”

Brett Herron, mayoral committee memberfor Transport for Cape Town (TCT), theCity’s transport authority, on Friday an-nounced theCityhas establishedadedicatedTransport Enforcement Unit (TEU) withintheCity’s directorate for safety and security.

This announcement comes in the wake ofa motion made by local councillor RoxanneHoorn for the City to clamp down on taxidrivers endangering the lives of other roadusers.

“The City’s transport authority is wellawareof theneed for amore focused strategyin addressing the issues Hoorn mentions inthe motion,” he said in a statement toTyger-Burger.

Herron says the proposed unit is in theprocess of being adequately resourced withadditional law enforcement officials and the

necessary technology to ensure its efficien-cy.

“If all goes according to plan, this new unitshould be deployed onto the City’s roads byOctober,” he says.

The TEU will focus on public transport, inparticular

operators without operating licences, op-erators who are contravening the terms oftheir operating licences, minibus taxis andprivate cars using the red MyCiTi lanes, aswell as motorists who use the bus and mini-bus taxi lanes on the N2 freeway during thepeak-hour periods.

The unit will initially consist of 136 offi-cials from the existing enforcement units.

“Apart from the 136 officials, it is proposedthat an additional 20 traffic officers be ap-pointed to support the public transport sys-tem, including the removal of the large num-ber of illegal taxis that are currently operat-ing on MyCiTi routes and depriving the City

of much-needed income,” he says.The Transport Enforcement (TE) branch

situated within TCT will, together with theTEU, determine, monitor and review thetasks to be performed by the unit.

“The TE branch will use business intelli-gence such as accident data, surveys of theregulation department, complaints abouttheMyCiTi serviceandother relevant statis-tics to determine the TEU’s priorities, aswell as where and how the officials of theunit should be deployed in order to bestserve its transport enforcement mandate,”he says.

Herron is of the opinion that the formationof the TEU will enhance the safety, securityand reliability of public transport and willreduce road accidents, deaths and injuries.

“I am confident that the new model fortransport enforcement will pay off verysoon, and that this unit will make a signifi-cant difference to minibus-taxi driver be-

haviour, speeding and general lawlessness,”concluded Herron.

JP Smith, mayoral committee member forsafety and security, added that taxis disre-garding the provisions of the National Traf-fic Act, is a problem all over the city.

“The City’s Traffic Service conducts en-forcement operations in as many areas aspossible, including in the Kraaifontein andBrackenfell areas. However, given our finiteresources, we are not able to be everywhereall of the time,” he said in response to a Tyg-erBurger media enquiry.

“Our enforcement efforts include issuingfines for transgressions in terms of the Na-tionalRoadTrafficAct, but also checking forpermits and ensuring that taxis on the roadare operating legally. As revealed recently,our traffic officers regularly impound thevehicles of taxi drivers who have no operat-ing permits or are operating in contraven-tion of their permit conditions,” he says.

was recently nominated for a JeunessesMusicales international YAMA award forbest opera of 2015.The 24-piece ensemble of Bloekombos

Secondary choir performed alongsideeight professional singers and actors aswell as a baroque chamber orchestra inthis piece that encompasses several cho-ruses and arias from Handel’s Messiah.The production premiered at Artscape

in March this year.“We are one of four finalists selected

from applicants from all over the world,including New York, Brussels, and Ber-lin,” says director Shirley Apthorp fromUmculo Productions.The production Comfort Ye, which took

its name from a famous line in Handel’sepicmasterpiece, was inspired by real sto-ries as experienced by children who grewup in the dusty streets of Bloekombos.The autobiographical texts of these

young people were captured during a 10-day workshop in December 2013.“They penned their stories and I used it

as material to write the text,” stage direct-or and librettist Robert Lehmeier toldTygerBurger.Themain story revolves around one day

in the life of a young man in Bloekombos.“It is a dark story, full of ambiguity and

shadow, but finds its way to an optimisticconclusion,” says Lehmeier, also associat-ed to Umculo Productions, an internation-al music organisation that supportslasting social change through music in

South Africa.He further describes the piece as heart-

wrenching and gripping, with a deeplyspiritual undercurrent.

“It is a story of love and death in themidst of abject poverty, substance abuseand teenage pregnancies, and the titleComfort Ye brilliantly encompasses thethemeof theproduction –how toovercomeand find hope when everything seems sodesperate,” he says.Apthorp adds that they are immensely

Anobvious solution to the prob-lem is to implement busesfrom the Kuils River area toKraaifontein, Bellville toKraaifontein, Eersteriver toKraaifontein, etc. I don’t thinkthese issues are exclusive tothe Northern Suburbs.

I think it is imperative thatthe community gets togetherabout the absolute lawlessnessof taxi drivers in the Bracken-fell area and the whole of OldPaarl Road.

Taxi drivers are given freereign to do whatever they wantin order to perform their“service” to commuters. Thismorning again, a taxi driverstopped in the middle of anintersection in Old Paarl(opposite Hyundai) and mywife had to overtake himcrossing the yellow lines.

I make use of the train andsome afternoons walk backhome. The taxis parkingopposite Cashbuild haveabsolutely no regard forpedestrians and will drive over

When driving in the directionof Shoprite DC, in front ofHyundai, taxis use the left-turnlane as a drop-off zone, blockingmotorists who live in that area.

They will stop on your rightat a red traffic light and thenwhen the light is about tochange, run the red light toswerve in front of you and loador drop off passengers on theleft side of the road.

The area in front of the newBurger King at PnP Hyper hasbecome a taxi rank and asevere hazard for any motoriststravelling down that road. Taxidrivers simply take off withoutobserving oncoming traffic.

When is law-enforcementgoing to clamp down on thisgrowing epidemic of lawlessinvaders? Or is it again a caseof “turning a blind eye” not todisrupt the peace and preventtaxi drivers and owners toprotest?

As a proud South African,embracing change in everyaspect, I feel the time has comewhere the law should beenforced to the letter, and thatno matter who the perpetratorsare, that every one breaking thelaw be punished accordingly.

The government should stopseeking excuses for not enforc-ing the law, and start acting asa government wanting to seethat South Africa can be acountry to be reckoned withand where zero tolerance is themotto we live by.

Yes, motorists and fellowroad users are at risk becauseof taxi drivers. However, I am aregular passenger of taxis inBellville.

The taxis are overloaded, andat times there are 20 people ina taxi.

We are forced to sit on eachother’s laps.

At Bellville taxi rank, the“people in charge” threaten youwith your life or other obsceni-ties.

This evening we commuted ina taxi in a really bad condition.

They used chipboard to coverthe hole in the chassis so thatyou don’t fall through the floor.

The traffic department isuseless too. They need under-cover traffic cops and road-blocks. The taxi drivers becomeclever and do their best toavoid getting stopped.

They often get extremelyracist and will refuse you seatsin a taxi, they call my fiancéand I “whiteys” or “boere” andthe rest is too horrid to men-tion here. So what would thecouncil do about the rights oftaxi passengers who get threat-ened or have their lives put indanger by overloading andreckless driving of these taxis?

Becoming an artist was a “no-brainer”for Eversdal’s Ruan Huisamen.

“I’d be rubbish at almost anything el-se,” says the 24-year-old, who is the onlyNorthern Suburbs artist to be chosen as aTop 40 finalist for this year’s prestigious San-lam Portrait Awards.

His charcoal and pastel on paper pieceMandi will be on display at the Rust-en-Vre-de Gallery in Durbanville with another top40 portraits until Thursday 8 October beforefinalists’ pieces go on tour around the coun-try.

Despite its incredible detail, Ruan saysMandi was actually “a bit of a rush job”. Heworked all night to finish the piece on time.

“I finished this work four hours before thecompetition closed.”

His subject for Mandi is Mindisa Ngqula-na, who works at a gallery in the CBD.Although he always knew he wanted to be

a professional artist, Ruan chose not to studyart after matriculating from DurbanvilleHigh School, as he feels the current tertiaryenvironment creates “jacks of all trades, butmasters of none.”Instead he spent hours refining his skills

on his own. “Fromayoung age I’ve had a ten-dency to try and create work as realisticallyor believable as possible.”

This was something he realised while stu-dying visual arts in high school. Hewas only17 when he took highest honours and thewinner’s trophy at the Tygerberg Eistedd-fod.

The decision to pursue a career in art me-ant not havingmuch of a social life for Ruan,who even spent his break times at school ho-ning his craft. Through the internet, he beca-me aware of artists as young as 13 who wereproducing brilliant work, and that pushedhim to practice.

His first foray into the professional artworld came in 2009 when he entered the nati-onal Sanlam Vuleka Art Competition.

From there he startedworking on commis-sions, which afforded him the opportunity to

further refine his technique.Initially, Ruan worked mostly with gra-

phite, but a chancemeetingwith artist LouisJansen van Vuuren at an exhibition in Stel-lenbosch put him on the road to charcoal.

Louis invited him to be his apprentice inFrance for three months, and a short whilelater he found himself on his way to Chateaua Creuzette in Boussac.Ruan describes the experience as “surre-

al”.The two engaged in spirited debates about

techniques and styles, but ultimately Louishelped Ruan move from pencil to charcoal,a medium he had been wary of.

“I thought it was an indomitable medium.It was powder; it was messy.”With Louis’ guidance however, Ruanmas-

tered the craft and his first charcoal dra-

which won him a top 10 place in the AbsaL’Atelier competition. He was also a finalistin the 2013 Sanlam Portrait Awards.Ruan says competitions like this offer a ra-

re opportunity for artists in South Africa togain exposure and entering the art marketin general.It also offers artists the chance to network

with other similar artists.“There aren’t really a lot of downsides.”

Riccardo Leo secured a fifth victory forItaly in the Reply Italian International u.16championship.

Loubser, from Boland, finished fourth onone-under-par 291, while Mayo, fromKwaZulu-Natal, andWestern Province’sFilippi tied for se-venth on 294.

Loubser, fromTheewaterskloof,carded rounds of74, 75, 69 and 73,Mayo, from MountEdgecombe, returnedrounds of 72, 74, 75 and73 and Filippi scored74, 76, 74 and 70.

This marks the firsttime that three SouthAfrican juniors finis-hed in the top 10 sincethe Italian Internatio-nal u.16 championshiplaunched in 2007.

“It really is a remarka-ble accomplishment,”said South African GolfAssociation golf integra-tion manager and teammanager, Eden Thomp-son.

“Haydn Porteous won this event in2008, Tristen Strydom tied for se-cond in 2011 and Haydn, YubinYung and Kyle McClatchie were

joint third in 2008, 2007 and 2013 respective-ly.
