Two Rancho Students Named Gates Millennium Scholars On April 27, 2012 the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program announced
the selection of this year’s cohort of 1,000 new students. Among these students
are Rancho’s own Yared Assefa and Martin Torres. The GMS Program will
award the Class of 2012 Gates Millennium Scholars good-through-graduation
scholarships which can be used to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at
the accredited college or university of the recipients’ choice. This year’s cohort
represents 47 states, the District of Columbia, the Marshall Islands and four U.S.
territories. Assefa and Torres represent two of the seven students chosen from
the state of Nevada to receive the Gates Millennium Scholarship.
Assefa, a senior in Rancho’s Pilot
Training program, plans to use the
scholarship to attend Embry-Riddle in
the fall. At Embry-Riddle he will study
Aerospace Engineering with a minor in
Flight Training. Assefa will be part of

Mr. Cardy’s second period RAM (Rancho Advisory & Mentoring) Freshmen Studies class recently received a
grant for $5000 dollars to donate to a charity of their choice funded through the We-R-Community program.
Students completed community service activities and researched and visited the non profits that they selected.
Students addressed the issue of homelessness and split their money between Nevada Partnership for Homeless
Youth, The Las Vegas Rescue Mission, and Shade Tree after visiting each of the institutions. Students from
the class were also selected to speak before the CCSD School Board as this was first time ninth graders from
an "at risk school" participated in the program. Generally, seniors from upper-level business and social studies
classes participate. Rancho High School is proud of these students and their efforts to improve their
community.
