reFlectIon -‘Why We need to go to Mass on sunday’Dear friends,

Many times I have been asked "Why do I need to go to Mass on Sunday?" Or I've been told "I don’t want to go to Mass on Sunday!" Another thing I've heard is "I don’t need to go to Mass on Sunday, I can pray from home." These questions or statements are not uncommon and are part of our pastoral life.

Why do I need to go to Mass on Sunday? Let me share some thoughts. I will start with one that I find very important, in addition to all the ones I already know. The person sitting next to you at Church needs you there. While it is true that we can pray from home and we may not want to go to Church because we may not like the priest or the choir or we are upset with the Catholic Church, this won’t change: your brother or sister sitting next to you in your pew needs you. Our faith is not an isolated reality, and, while it is about a personal relationship with God, it is a community act. It is something we do together, and it cannot be done alone. You may not speak to your brother or sister sitting next to you but there is a silent interaction. We share our struggles, our joys and sorrows, our dreams and nightmares. When you are not there, it is not just about you - your choice and your decision, but one brother or sister won’t have your silent support. Why we need to go to church? Because we need each other!

When you go to a show, restaurant or public event and you find it empty, what is your reaction? And when it is crowded - full of people? Don’t you think your presence makes a huge difference at Mass?

Let's now briefly review another very good reason why we need to go to church: it is a commandment and the Church was given the right to determine on what day we should worship together based on the Scriptures and Tradition. It is true that, at the end, it may be an arbitrary rule, but all human rules are arbitrary. In the end what matters is that this rule is for our good based in the truth. Going to Mass together as a family, a community of faith, is an amazing thing to do.

Dear brothers and sisters, never lose motivation to go to Mass to worship God together. We need each other.

    Fr. Estanislao Mikalonis, Pastor
