SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT

To the Honorable Board of Pa,!,/:' Commissioners,Omaha, Nebraska.

GENTLEMEN :-.

Herewith I submit the annual report of work done undermy supervision in the several Parks and Boulevards of the Cityfor the year 1911.

The work has been largely that of maintenance, exceptingin Fontenelle and Levi Carter Parks, which has been of permanent improvement. In the latter the work has been principally dredging material out of the lake to fill the sloughs andlow ground, and the erection of dykes to hold back the silt andsand pumped in. We are now. building an orange-peel dipperdredge with which to continue this work along the shore lines. The grounds being of such a nature that all dirt for this purpose has to be taken from the lake bed, and we were handicappedfor material for this purpose, hence the necessity of getting adipper dredge.

Fontenelle Park containing 108 acres has been in the possession of the city since 1892, but there has not been a demand forits improvement until the present time, and no work has beendone of any consequence except planting trees and hedges. Thecontour of the Park is such that it will make an ideal golf courseand other out-of-door sports. With this object in view we havebeen putting in drives, leveling off grounds, seeding etc. Themain drive through the Park is a continuation of the NorthwestBoulevard from Military avenue to connect with the newly acquired Boulevard rnnning north from Bemis Park through therecently donated Mercer Park lands, and the waterworks sixteen acres, which I presume will be embellished as a Park inconformity with the policy of other cities who oWn their ownwaterworks. The other work in Fontenelle Park is developingdrives to connect with the Boulevard showing different views ofthe Park.

Elmwood Park is ea~h year becoming more popular as itis being developed by the planting of trees and shrubbery,

the widening of drives to accommodate the automobile traffic, putting in permanent walks and steps leading to the pavilion whichwas erected some two years ago. All of which adds to its appearance and attractiveness. rPhe influx of visitors to this Parkhas been very noticable with the extension of the West Leavenworth street car line to its main entrance and as it is one of ourlargest parks so far improved, is made use of by the larger picnicparties.

Hanscom Park as usual is very popular. Improvements madein this Park have not been very extensive, further than puttingin concrete curbing and walks leading to the music pavilion. The fiower dicplay has been up to an efficient standard, and wasvery attractive even though we were handicapped by an extremely dry season.

In Riverview Park the work has been largely that of maintenance, with the exception of widening the drive surrounding thedeer paddock, which was done in connection with the grading onthe Boulevard immediately east at the north entrance.

Miller Park is each year improving in appearance and popularity. The grounds for golf, cricket, tennis and other gameswhich make this Park popular, have all been kept in good condition.

The smaller Parks comprising Curtiss Turner, Bemis, Kountze,Deer and Jefferson Square, have had no permanent improvementswith the exception of cement walks in Jefferson Square, andcement walk with steps leading to the artesian well in KountzePark, .and various other small improvements.

Regarding the Boulevard work done in 1911, th.ere was thegrading on the Southeast Boulevard :from Hascall street tothe entrance of Riverview Park with the necessary sloping andfilling of ground to conform with the Park on the west side ofthis Boulevard, and guttering the same with the, necessary catchbasins and piping to take care of storm water. Also on theSoutheast Boulevard from Williams to Dorcas streets we macadamed on both sides of the· asphalt paving up to the gutterline, at a cost of ninety-one cents per yard.

On Sou·th Central Boulevard macadam with taroleum binderwas laid from 20th street to the east end of the viaduct, at a

cost of eighty-six cents per yard, and from the west side of theviaduct to 30th and Vinton streets, this portion was put down,,,ith water macadam base treated with taroleum surface, whichhas given good satisfaction.

On "West Central between 'Woolworth aud Poppleton avenues, the Boulevard was curbed guttered and macadamed; alsofrom Farnam to Harney it was macadl\med,curbed and guttered;from Farnam to Harney street, one block, has been curbed andguttered ready for laying macadam.

Florence Boulevard from Grand avenue to Fort street waspaved to the width of twenty feet with water macadam. FromChicago to Izard street, the Boulevard was macadamed betweencurbs to a width of forty feet) also two intersections were takenup at Izard and Nicholas streets and macadamed to conformwith the other portions of the Boulevard. The stretch of Boulevard from Nicholas to Pratt was dressed with taroleum coveredwith sand, which has given a good wearing surface for the past·ten months.

The Northwest Boulevard from Military avenue to Fontenelle Park and through Fontenelle Park to 42nd street, hasbeen graded to its full width and trees planted.

Preparations have been made to improve the newly acquiredBoulevards and additions thereto designated by your Honorable'Body and will no doubt be improved the coming season.

Respectfully submitted,WM. R. ADAMS, Superintendent.
