Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost

10.28.2012

Reflection

"Since David was to be king over the covenant people, God entered into a particular

covenant with him and his successors. This needs to be seen not as a new covenant

unrelated to the Sinai covenant but as a particular outworking of it in the context of

monarchy. After all, who was the true king? The Sinai covenant had articulated the

conviction that the true king of Israel was YHWH himself... the reign of David is not

to be seen as in any way replacing or usurping the reign of YHWH, but rather as an

embodiment of it. David as human king of Israel will carry out the purpose of YHWH,

their covenant great King."

- Christopher Wright

"The king of Israel functions as covenant mediator. As the national head, the king

represents the people. His obedience or disobedience will have enormous conse-

quences for the national life... It was the king who set the pattern of life for good or

ill."

- Michael Williams

Calling

WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP* - FROM PSALM 90

Leader: Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations

People: Before the mountains were brought forth or ever you had formed

the earth and the world

Leader: From everlasting to everlasting you are God

People: Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may

rejoice and be glad all our days

PRAYER OF ADORATION

PRAYER CONCLUDES BY SAYING IN UNISON:

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be

done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our

debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

HYMNS OF PRAISE — CROWN HIM WITH MANY CRO WNS / IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL (MUSIC ON PAGES 3–4)

*Biblical worship is always a response to God’s gracious revelation of himself to his people. Hence, all our

worship services begin with a scriptural “call to worship” (that is, the content of the “call” comes from God’s own Word

quoted by the leader and the congregation). In this “call” we are reminded that God always takes the initiative. He

always comes toward his people first, in grace. Our worship is a reflexive and deliberate response to his gracious call.

We are promised that when we worship him correctly, he is glorified and the dislocations of our lives are healed.

Crown Him With Many Crowns WORDS: MATTHEW BRIDGES, MUSIC: GEORGE ELVEY

Crown Him with many crowns,

the Lamb upon His throne.

Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns

all music but its own.

Awake, my soul, and sing

of Him who died for thee,

And hail Him as thy matchless King

through all eternity.

Crown Him the Lord of life,

who triumphed over the grave,

And rose victorious in the strife

for those He came to save.

His glories now we sing,

who died, and rose on high,

Who died eternal life to bring,

and lives that death may die.

Crown Him the Lord of love,

behold His hands and side,

Those wounds, yet visible above,

in beauty glorified.

No angel in the sky

can fully bear that sight,

But downward bends his burning eye

at mysteries so bright.

It Is Well With My Soul WORDS: HORATIO SPAFFORD, MUSIC: PHILIP BLISS

When peace like a river

Attendeth my way

When sorrows

Like sea billows roll

Whatever my lot

Thou hast taught me to say

It is well

It is well with my soul

It is well

With my soul

It is well, It is well

With my soul

My sin, oh, the bliss

Of this glorious thought!

My sin,

Not in part but the whole,

Is nailed to the cross,

And I bear it no more,

Praise the Lord,

Praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well

With my soul

It is well, It is well

With my soul

Cleansing

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Almighty God, gracious Father, we confess that we are not worthy of Your

presence, but we look now to the Lamb of God, who takes away our sin. Through

Him we would now come near to You, listening to Your voice, trusting in Your love,

delighting in Your Word, and leaning on Your arm. We joyfully beg to see Your face!

Now cleanse our minds of all error and our hearts of all idols, that we may shine in

the world with the radiant light of Your Spirit and Your character. In the name of

Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION (45 SECONDS)

SONG OF COMFORT — HOW DEEP THE FATHER'S LOVE FOR US (MUSIC: STUART TOWNEND)

WORDS OF ASSURANCE A ND THE PEACE

Leader: The Lord God said: “A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put

within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a

heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)

Leader: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

How deep the Father's love for us

How vast beyond all measure

That He should give His only Son

To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss

The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One

Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross

My sin upon His shoulders

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life

I know that it is finished

SONG OF UNION — THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION

The Church’s one foundation

Is Jesus Christ her Lord,

She is His new creation

By water and the Word.

From heaven He came and sought her

To be His holy bride;

With His own blood He bought her

And for her life He died.

Elect from every nation,

Yet one o’er all the earth;

Her charter of salvation,

One Lord, one faith, one birth;

One holy Name she blesses,

Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses,

With every grace endued.

O Worship The King WORDS: ROBERT GRANT, ALT. CHRIS TOMLIN, MUSIC: JOHANN HAYDN

O worship the King all glorious above

O gratefully sing His wonderful love

Our Shield and Defender the Ancient of Days

Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise

O tell of His might O sing of His grace

Whose robe is the light and canopy space

His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form

And dark is His path on the wings of the storm

Chorus

You alone are the matchless King

To You alone be all majesty

Your glories and wonders

What tongue can recite

You breathe in the air

You shine in the light

O measureless might ineffable love

While angels delight to worship above

Thy mercies how tender how firm to the end

Our Maker Defender Redeemer and Friend

Chorus 2x

O worship the King all glorious above

O gratefully sing His wonderful love

Our Shield and Defender the Ancient of Days

Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise

Lead On, O King Eternal WORDS: ERNEST W. SHURTLEFF, ALT. JEFF PARDO, MUSIC: JEFF PARDO

Lead on, O King eternal,

The day of march has come;

Henceforth in fields of conquest

Thy tents shall be our home.

Through days of preparation

Thy grace has made us strong;

And now, O King eternal,

We lift our battle song.

Lead on, O King eternal,

Till sin’s fierce war shall cease,

And holiness shall whisper

The sweet amen of peace.

For not with swords’ loud clashing,

Nor roll of stirring drums;

With deeds of love and mercy

The heavenly kingdom comes.

Lead on, O King, lead on, O King

Lead on, O King, lead on

Lead on, O King eternal,

We follow, not with fears,

For gladness breaks like morning

Where’er Thy face appears.

Thy cross is lifted over us,

We journey in its light;

The crown awaits the conquest;

Lead on, O God of might.

Lead on, O King, lead on, O King

Lead on, O King, lead on

INVITATION TO THE SA CRAMENT

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Minister: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Minister: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

Minister: With joy we praise you, gracious God, for you created heaven and earth,

made us in your image, and kept covenant with us— even when we fell into

sin. We give you thanks for Jesus Christ, our Lord, who by his life, death, and res-

urrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore we join our voices

with all the saints and angels and the whole creation to proclaim the glory of your

name.

(The Congregation Sings Together)

HOLY HOLY HOLY

WORDS: REGINALD HEBER, MUSIC: JOHN DYKES

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy Name in earth, and sky, and sea;

Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Minister: Eternal God, let your Holy Spirit move in power over us and over these

earthly gifts of bread and wine, that our sharing of them may be for us true fellow-

ship with our king and savior Jesus and with each other. May his coming in glory

find us ever watchful in prayer, strong in truth and love, and faithful in the break-

ing of the bread.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION

Minister: Therefore, let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

People: Christ has died,

Christ has risen,

Christ will come again.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP

Directions for taking communion: Redeemer Church welcomes all sincere

Christians—those who are trusting in Jesus Christ for salvation, understand the

meaning of the Lord’s Supper, and are in good standing with congregations that

proclaim the gospel— to receive Holy Communion with us. Please note that we use

wine for Communion; if you prefer non alcoholic grape juice, the grape juice is

white and the wine is red. For those with wheat allergies, a gluten free cracker is

available in place of the bread. Also, the bread and the wine may be eaten and

drunk as they are received. Please dispose of the cups in the trash receptacle.

A Word to Parents: Children are welcome at the communion table. To receive

the Lord’s Supper, a child must have been baptized and been formally received as a

communing member by the Session of this church or the governing body of the

church to which you belong. If you have any question about how the process works,

please contact Pastor David. Children may take the wine at their parents’ discre-

tion.

PRAYERS FOR THOSE NO T COMMUNING

(Because Redeemer is a church that is not only for convinced Christians, but also for peo-

ple at different stages in their spiritual journey, we gladly extend room for you to process,

think, and dialogue. Use the prayers provided below as guides to reflect upon and respond

to what God is doing in your life.)

PRAYER FOR THOSE SEA RCHING FOR TRUTH

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be

undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If

what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of

who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and

that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

PRAYER OF BELIEF

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before

believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I

thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering

forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn

from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH SIN

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn

from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me

to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set

before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen.

PRAYER OF COMMITMENT

Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of

committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps

to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Psalm 130 WORDS: MARTIN LUTHER (1524), MUSIC: CHRISTOPHER MINER (1997)

From depths of woe I raise to Thee

The voice of lamentation

Lord turn a gracious ear to me

And hear my supplication

If Thou iniquities dost mark

Our secret sins and misdeeds dark

O who shall stand before Thee

O who shall stand before Thee

To wash away the crimson stain

Grace grace alone availeth

Our works alas are all in vain

In much the best life faileth

No man can glory in Thy sight

All must alike confess Thy might

And live alone by mercy

And live alone by mercy

Therefore my trust is in the Lord

And not in mine own merit

On Him my soul shall rest

His word upholds my fainting spirit

His promised mercy is my fort

My comfort and my sweet support

I wait for it with patience

I wait for it with patience

What though I wait the live-long night

And till the dawn appeareth

My heart still trusteth in His might

It doubteth not nor feareth

Do thus O ye of Israel's seed

Ye of the Spirit born indeed

And wait till God appeareth

And wait till God appeareth

Though great our sins and sore our woes

His grace much more aboundeth

His helping love no limit knows

Our utmost need it soundeth

Our shepherd good and true is He

Who will at last His Israel free

From all their sin and sorrow

From all their sin and sorrow

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVI NG*

Eternal God, Heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members

of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. You have fed us with spiritual food in the Sac-

rament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us

strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

*A prayer written by Thomas Cranmer, 16th century archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the English Reformation and author of the first Book of Common Prayer. He was martyred for his faith, burned at the stake outside St. Mary’s Church in Ox-ford, England.

Fall Sunday School Classes

September 23—December 9, 9:00-9:50 am (Classes will not meet on 11/25.)

ADULT CLASSES:

For all ages, Junior High and up

This fall we are trying something new! For the fall only we will have a class for the men

and a class for the women led by the men’s and women’s ministry teams.

Men’s Sunday School Class — The God-Made Man

We want to build a community of men at Redeemer where the men have each other’s back,

where our connections with each other build true strength into our lives. This class is one

step in that direction. In every class we will do three things:

1. Hear the stories of other men at Redeemer — Each week a different man will tell a bit

of his life story focusing on the events (the good, the bad, and the ugly) that God has

used to shape him. Don’t worry we won’t surprise you during the class and call on you

to share out of the blue.

2. Discuss a chapter of The Life of a God-Made Man, by Dr. Dan Doriani — This book ig-

nores the trend to reduce Christian manhood to a string of methods and lists, and in-

stead explores the nature of God and how grace transforms us into the fathers, hus-

bands, friends, and leaders that God desires us to be. You don’t have to read the book

to be in the class.

3. Pray for each other.

It’s not complicated, but it will be powerful. Commit to building the community of men at

Redeemer and make this class a priority.

Women’s Sunday School Class — By Design

Our women are using the book By Design: God's Distinctive Calling for Women by Susan

Hunt to discuss God’s strong affirmation of the value of women and the vital role they play

in his work in the world. By Design is an uplifting and practical introduction to God's won-

derful design for women. It is not about answering feminist arguments or exegeting biblical

passages on traditional roles, submission, or headship. Instead it is an opportunity for

women to explore the significance of their distinctive and biblical calling. This book is a

joyous celebration of this calling and a rallying cry to the church to retain one of its most

valuable resources: its women. (Books are available at the Redeemer Book Table.)

CHILDREN’S CLASSES:

Nursery Care for infants to 36 months old

Preschool and Elementary - Kids Quest Catechism Club

Teachers: Jeff & Emily Patterson (PreK-K), Maureen Messenger (1 st-5 th Grade)

This class teaches children Bible truths through simple questions and answers, promoting

memorization using Bible teaching, music, skits, activities, and more. Children will learn

that they are made for God's glory and enjoyment in him and how to apply that truth to

their lives.

What Does Discipleship at Redeemer Look Like?

Worship → Nurture → Mission → Culture

Worship & Nurture

Worship

The anchor and center of discipleship at Redeemer is our weekly Sunday worship and the

nourishment we receive there that comes through the Word and sacrament as a means of

God’s grace.

Nurture

Our ministries of nurture are the means we use to encourage spiritual growth and develop-

ment at Redeemer. They include the cultivation of an everyday discipleship church culture,

community groups, education, and family life gatherings.

Page 19: REDEEMER CHURCH Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost …

19

Mission & Culture

What is discipleship for? To be a disciple is to be swept up in the mission of God in the

world. Our ministries of nurture drive, support, and inform our lifestyle characterized by

mission and pursuit of the peace of the city through creating culture.

Mission

We know our discipleship with Jesus is maturing when we are motivated by the grace and

acceptance of God to reach out to others. Practically we see the mission aspect of our dis-

cipleship on display when we pursue God’s mission through doing acts of mercy and hospi-

tality, serving our church community, caring for those who are suffering, serving the poor

and oppressed, sharing the good news of Jesus with those who do not yet follow Jesus, and

helping plant other churches that do the same.

Culture

Christians are called not to hide behind the walls of their distinct community but to take

their new hearts, minds and perspectives into the surrounding communities as salt and

light. As Abraham Kuyper contends, the believing community, gathered around Word and

sacrament, must radiate “beams of faith’s light into the realm of common grace” into edu-

cation, art, science, politics, business, economics and the marketplace. This means that

Christians are called to create public education institutions, build businesses, organize

neighborhood groups, create charities,

be artists and musicians and writers,

and start political action groups. We

are to make culture. As Jeremiah ex-

horted the newly exiled Jews in Babylon,

“Seek the peace (shalom) of the

city” (Jer. 29:5-7). Redeemer supports

this effort through education and facili-

tating Christians banding together to

support and encourage each other as

they create culture.
