Edinburgh Napier University working in partnership with the creative industriesIn the School of Arts & Creative Industries, our BA (Hons) TV course prepares students for diverse careers in the sector by providing innovative and theoretical training across a wide area of TV production.

Students studying on this programme possess up to date technical, creative, organisational and communicative skills.

In their fourth year, our students have the option to complete a work placement to develop these skills and consolidate their learning by actively applying their skills in a work environment.

Work placements offer great benefits to both students and employers and provide the opportunity for knowledge exchange and positive collaboration.

Skills

By their 4th year our BA (Hons) TV students have excellent verbal and written communication, team-work and organisational skills gained from their studies and group projects.

In addition to this;

• Avid Media composer (video editing)• Avid Pro Tools (audio editing)• Camera filming techniques (including Sony EX3, PMW350 and DSLR cameras)• Presenter techniques and voice coaching• Studio multi-cam productions• Engage with production for television and other creative media through ideas and content development, execution and presentation.• Employ a range of technical and creative skills to initiate and realise media production.• Conduct independent research and apply relevant findings to creative practice and academic enquiry.• Deploy project management skills appropriate to a range of media production.• Demonstrate self-motivation, enthusiasm and professionalism.• Demonstrate a broad understanding of the structures, institutions and practices relevant to creative media, television production and broadcasting in the 21st century

Areas of Employment

The broad range of creative skills our students possess allow for work placements and work-related projects across the creative industries and TV production.

• Guest liaison • Independent television production – drama, entertainment & factual.• Broadcast television (BBC, STV/ETV): Outside broadcast, gallery, guest liaison, social media, runner • Acting agency• Archive • Facilities & equipment companies• Post-production facilities • Sound design and post-production• Media legal/ copyright• Community based media production• Corporate and 3rd sector video production• Press officer• Social media content provider

Academic Support

Students receive academic support throughout the module specifically tailored to enable them to be work ready. They will receive guidance on presentation skills and be supported in developing professional attitudes and working practices.

Recruitment

The placement team in the School of Arts & Creative Industries will be happy to discuss and support all aspects of recruiting/appointing a work placement student. We can liaise over job descriptions, advertise opportunities, collate CV’s, applications and portfolios as well as assist in arranging interviews, circulating feedback etc.

We can also provide guidance on placement agreements and health and safety.

Timings

TV Work Based Learning (LMD10120)

Our year 4 BA (Hons) TV students can complete their work placement in Trimester 1 of their fourth year (September to December) and recruitment is usually conducted in early autumn. However students are also available for Trimester 2 and summer work subject to availability.
