Introduction Thisvesselisequippedwithfivedieselgenerators.Eachdieselgeneratorisratedat2.5MW

andhasa6.6kVgenerator.The6.6kVswitchgearsystemconsistsoftwosections,starboard

andportside.Bothbusbarsectionscanbecoupledbyatie-breakerwhichisnormallyclosed

underDPoperation.

Inbrief,theupgradeconsistedofseveralelements;engineeringofsoftware,production

ofelectricaldrawings,deliveryofhardware,installationofhardwareandcommissioning

ofthecompletesystemdescribedbelow,numerousmeetingstechnicalandcommercial,

DPtrialandFMEAtestswereheldandwitnessedbyGlobalMaritimeandDNV.

Thisprojectthrewupmanychallengestoourremitofensuringworkwascompletedontime

andtothesatisfactionoftheclient;verytightschedules,restrictedworkingspace,existing

drawingsthatappearednothavebeenupdatedandmajoroverhaulworkbeingcarriedout

onthedieselenginessimultaneouslywiththeupgradeofcontrolswereafewofthem.

ActuatorTheobsoleteBarberColmanactuators,typeDYNC16001-002-0-024havebeenreplaced

byaWoodwardProactdigitalmodelIIIactuator.

TheProactactuatorhasanintegrateddriverboardandhasastatusfailureoutputcontact.

ThisoutputcontactisfedbacktotheAtlasSCcontrolsystemforsupervisionandalarming.

Whenthehealthystatusoutputsignalfromtheactuatorisde-energisedtheATLASSCwill

activatethe“startnextdiesel”relayandatthesametimetheATLASSCwillactivatethe

fuelsolenoidvalveinordertostopthedieselengine(inunhealthystate)andpullthefuel

racktozero.

port.ByusingtheLONlinesaloadshareerrorcanbedetected.Incasealoadshareerror

occurstheapplicablecontrolwillimplementabumplessswitchovertodroopmodeand

analarmwillbeactivated.

Load sharing system and synchronization The functionality offered by the obsolet

BarberColman loadsharingunits, type

DYNZ80100andsynchronizationunit,type

DYNZ 10100 have been replaced by the

WoodwardATLASSCcontrol.

TheWoodwardATLASSCcontrolselected

forthisapplicationconsistsofasmartcore

board,powersupplyboardandapowersense

board.Thepowersenseboardconsistoftwo

three-phasevoltageinputs,twothree-phase

currentinputs,aspeedbiasinput,voltage

biasoutputtothevoltageregulatoranda

LONchannelcommunicationport.

hadthepossibilitytolowertheactualover-

speedtripsetpointbymeansofa

potentiometer.

In thenewsituation, anoverspeed test-

switchisusedtolowertheactualoverspeed

setpointtotesttheoverspeedtripcircuit.

By switching the local/remote switch to

remote, the speed/load of the engine can

beincreasedordecreasedmanually.

Diesel PLC TheobsoleteNEBBStartomatPLC’shadbeeninstalledindrawers.Overtimetheconnectors

havebeendamagedwhichresultedinunexpectedshutdowns.

AllfunctionalityprovidedbytheStartomatPLChasbeenconvertedandprogrammedintothe

ATLASSCcontrol.AstheoperatorswantedtomaintainthesamemodeofoperationanHMI

andaplatewithstart,stopandresetswitchesincludingindicatorshasbeeninstalled.
