• 33 new proposals submitted (22 old, 11 new)• 20 were funded (13 old, 7 new)• Mathematics projects nearly completely kicked out

(but the Lagrangian analysis of superstructures has tobe continued)

Phase space analysis in complex systems - From quantum dynamics to turbulent flows

We also offer individual fellowships (phd, postdoc, sabbatical). Applications are accepted continuously. For details, please check www.pks.mpg.de/visitors

International Focus Workshop7 - 9 April 2020The focus of this workshop is on the current state of phase space analysis in complex nonlinear systems applied to transitional and turbulent flows, active living matter and quantum systems. The meeting is held in memoriam of Prof. Bruno Eckhardt, whose pioneering work over the past decades has led to significant developments in this field.

Applications are welcome and should be made by using the application form on the event‘s web page. The number of attendees is limited. The registration fee for the international focus workshop is 140 Euro and should be paid by all participants. Costs for accommodation and meals will be covered by the Max Planck Institute. Limited funding is available to partially cover travel expenses.

Coherent sets

Coherent or nearly coherent sets in phase space, fluid volume, ...

How do we quantify Lagrangian coherence?

• We try to determine the coherent set itself→ Set – based methods

• We try to determine the manifold that surrounds the coherent set→ Manifold – based methods

• Both classes of methods are tied to material transport in the flow in contrast to the Eulerian analysis

Short- and long-term goals• 1st Period

• Identify joint activities between funded projects withinthe six work packages

• Identify benchmark problems for open and closedflows to apply the new methods and algorithms

Page 10: Turbulent Superstructures - tu-ilmenau.de

What‘s next?

• Is spatial and/or temporal filtering also useful forlong-term Lagrangian analysis of superstructures?

• Which connection exists between Eulerian Exact CoherentStates and Lagrangian Coherent Sets and their bifurcations?

• Do near-wall structures provide the foundations for turbulent superstructures in the bulk?

• Does a variation of boundary scales affect the formation anddynamics of a turbulent superstructure?
