Rice University Advanced Placement Summer Institute
Tuesday – Friday, August 1 ‐ 4, 2017
Your check‐in location is the Anderson‐Clarke Center. Please see attached campus map with check‐in location and parking information.
Thank you for choosing to be a part of the 23rd annual Rice University Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI). We are excited for you to join us for an informative and challenging week. In order to make the institute as enjoyable as possible, please carefully review the following information.
Check‐in and orientation: Check‐in for your course will take place on Tuesday, August 1 from 7:15 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. at the Anderson‐Clarke Center (ACC). Please note there are two check‐in locations. Please make sure you are aware of your assigned location. The hotel shuttle will be stopping at both locations. A brief orientation for all participants will follow promptly at 8:00 a.m. After orientation, you will go directly to your classroom.
Commuter participants: Participants are ONLY authorized to park in West Lot 4 on the Rice campus. Please enter the
campus at Entrance 8 off of University Blvd. and Stockton or entrance 17 or 18 off of Rice Blvd. and enter West Lot 4
through either of the two gates marked on the attached campus map. Please print out the attached parking permit
and bring it with you. We are asking that you fill in your last name and course in case we need to locate you while
you are at the institute. This permit is to be placed on your dashboard for access to West Lot 4. There will be an
attendant at both of the gates from 7:00‐8:30 a.m. to allow those through with the parking permit. You do not need
to get on a campus shuttle as the ACC is immediately adjacent to West Lot 4.
Beginning Wednesday morning, you must use a parking card and hangtag to enter the lot. Please be sure to request a parking card and hangtag if needed when checking in on Tuesday morning. Participants staying at the Houston Marriott Medical Center: A Rice University shuttle will transport guests from the Marriott to the Rice campus approximately every 15 minutes from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and from Rice to the Marriott from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Drop‐off and pick‐up will be at the Anderson‐Clarke Center. The Rice shuttle only provides round‐trip transportation service from the Houston Marriott Medical Center. If you are staying at other hotels, please check with their front desk about transportation to Rice.
Late arrivals or emergencies: Staff will be available at the front reception desk of the Anderson‐Clarke Center to assist you in the event you are delayed. You can park in visitor parking behind the building or pull up in the covered driveway next to the building entrance.
Class schedule: Classes begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. each morning and end at 4:30 p.m. Attendance is taken twice a day and individuals will receive a reduced number of hours on their certificate for every hour missed. It is the participant’s responsibility to sign the attendance sheet each morning and afternoon. Lunch: Lunch will be served daily in the North Servery. Your instructor will inform you of your designated lunch time on the first day of the institute. Our schedule allows for a one hour lunch. Vegetarian and gluten free options are available. PLEASE NOTE‐ Important information regarding your certificate of completion: You will NOT receive your certificate on the last day of the institute. Within two business days of the end of the program, you will receive an email instructing you to complete an evaluation. After completing the evaluation, you will be able to access your certificate under the Account Information‐ Registration History/Certificates section in your account through our online registration system. What to bring: Refer to your course description online at http://collegeready.rice.edu/ap‐summer‐institute‐courses for specific items if requested by your instructor. Please dress casually and wear shoes appropriate for walking. You will be most comfortable if you plan to dress for hot weather outdoors, but bring a sweater or jacket as air‐conditioned classrooms may be quite cool. You may also wish to bring an umbrella and a chair cushion if you find classroom seating uncomfortable. MAT Info Session
The Rice University Education department offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) for experienced teachers with
optional principal certification. Please join us for an information session Thursday, August 3rd from 7:15‐7:45 a.m. at
the Anderson‐Clarke Center, Room 300. If you are interested in attending the session, please click here to RSVP.
Special Needs or Mobility Issues: If you have any special needs or mobility issues, please contact [email protected] so we may work to accommodate your needs before the start of the institute. Rice University Police Department: The campus police department is building number 43 on the campus map. You can reach them by phone at 713‐348‐6000 or extension 6000 from a campus phone.
