Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to the second annual Advanced Manufacturing Summit in Worcester. This collaborative event will bring together hundreds of leading executives and managers from the Commonwealth’s manufacturing industry for a full day of exciting workshops and panels.

Massachusetts is leading the nation in growing a 21st-century advanced manufacturing sector thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of companies and leaders throughout our Commonwealth. This summit offers an invaluable opportunity for these leaders to share best practices, network and discuss future opportunities and challenges. By continuing to build on our solid foundation in our advanced manufacturing sector, we will ensure a strong manufacturing workforce for our future.

Advanced manufacturing is a critical part of our strategy to create jobs and drive long-term economic development. As Massachusetts manufacturers continue to succeed in world markets, they create more opportunities for innovation and jobs back home. We remain committed to building an industry that is competing through innovation and that is maintaining a competitive edge in our global economy.

Your state government is committed to being a partner in your success. Last year, with strong legislative support, we committed over $21 million in new funds to support advanced manufacturing. We know that manufacturers need highly-skilled workers across the state. Last year, I announced the launch of the Advanced Manufacturing Regional Partnership Academy (AMRPA) because we know that when our leaders from industry, government and academia work together in regional partnerships we are best able to meet industry needs. Through new investments and partnerships, workers are being trained on state-of-the-art equipment for the manufacturing jobs of today and tomorrow.

The great success of last year’s summit led to the demand for this year’s summit. Let’s turn out in full force at this event on April 29 to ensure that Massachusetts remains at the forefront in growing our advanced manufacturing sector.

Sincerely,

The Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) is an organization established by statute and signed into law by Governor Deval L. Patrick in August 2012. The AMC is comprised of leaders from industry, academia and government and is charged with developing and leading the implementation of a strategy to enhance the competitiveness of Massachusetts manufacturing and lead the national effort to revitalize this country as a place that makes things.

The AMC is organized into five working groups that parallel the Collaborative’s key priorities. Each working group is co-chaired by manufacturers and matched with a public sector partner. They include: Promoting Manufacturing, Workforce and Education, Manufacturing Innovation, Competitiveness through Energy Management, and Capital Resources.

Our Workforce Future: What Do You Demand? The prevailing understanding is that we have a skills gap in manufacturing. In 2012, Northeastern’s Staying Power II report projected a need of 100,000 workers over the next ten years due to attrition and retirements. We hear from employers that they cannot find enough qualified workers to fill jobs in demand and that they could take on more work if only they could find the talent to do the job. A recent national study from MIT suggests that the crisis may be of a smaller scale for high tech firms requiring higher skill levels but still an issue for a critical percentage of firms with long term vacancies. In Massachusetts, we are identifying and supporting regional manufacturing partnerships of vocational schools, workforce organizations, community colleges and employers that are collaborating to meet the skills demand and seeking innovative solutions to scaling the outputs of their training programs. In this plenary session, you will hear from small, medium and large manufacturers about the variety of skills needs and how they are addressing their pipeline and succession planning.Moderator: Greg Bialecki, Secretary of Housing & Economic Development, Commonwealth of MassachusettsPanelists: Steve Capshaw, President, Valley Steel Stamp, Inc. Massachusetts ADVANCED MANUFACTURING SUMMIT 2014

FEATURED SPEAKER: Governor Deval Patrick

First elected in 2006 on a platform of hope and change, Governor Deval Patrick entered office propelled by an unprecedented grassroots campaign. Over the course of his first term, Governor Patrick faced down strong economic headwinds to make Massachusetts a national leader in clean energy, affordable health care, public education, veterans services and job growth.

The Governor successfully implemented Massachusetts’ landmark health care reform law, bringing affordable health care insurance to over 98% of the state’s residents — the highest percentage in the nation. He is now focused on new strategies to rein in health insurance premiums and make health care as affordable as it is accessible. The Governor has also fought to preserve marriage equality and ensure that Massachusetts’ veterans return home to a world-class support system.

By choosing to invest in education, infrastructure and innovative industries, Governor Patrick positioned Massachusetts to rebound quickly from the global recession and continue its growth trajectory. His budgets have funded public education at the highest levels in the state’s history and under his leadership Massachusetts won the national Race to the Top education reform competition. The Governor pushed for and signed an education reform bill giving schools the tools they need to close a persistent student achievement gap and support classroom innovation. Massachusetts’ public school students have consistently ranked at the top of the Nation on achievement tests.

The Governor has also recommitted the state to the improvement and expansion of the Commonwealth’s aging and neglected public infrastructure with record investments in roads, rails and bridges, public and affordable housing, broadband expansion, and public college and university campuses. And through targeted initiatives that play to the Commonwealth’s unique strengths, like his landmark 10-year, $1 billion program to promote the state’s life sciences industry, the Governor has positioned the state as a global leader in biotech, bio pharmaceuticals and IT, and as a national leader in clean energy, including making Massachusetts home to the country’s first offshore wind farm.

Governor Patrick is a graduate of Harvard College, the first in his family to attend college, and of Harvard Law School. Following law school, he served as a law clerk to a federal appellate judge before joining the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund as a staff attorney. In 1986, he joined the Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow and was named partner in 1990, at the age of 34.

In 1994, President Clinton appointed Patrick Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, the nation’s top civil rights post. At the Justice Department, Patrick worked on a wide range of issues, including prosecution of hate crimes, and the enforcement of employment discrimination, fair lending and disabilities rights laws.

In 1997, Patrick was appointed the first chairperson of Texaco’s Equality and Fairness Task Force where he led a company-wide effort to create a more equitable workplace environment. The Governor later served as Texaco’s Vice President and General Counsel, leading the company’s global legal affairs, and as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the Coca-Cola Company, a member of the company’s senior leadership team.

Diane and Deval Patrick have been married for more than twenty-five years and have two adult daughters.

Harry Moser, Founder, Reshoring Initiative

Harry Moser is the founder of the Reshoring Initiative, an industry-led effort to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States.

With more than 45 years of manufacturing experience (most recently as chairman emeritus of Charmilles Technologies Corporation, now GF AgieCharmilles), Moser is a leading industry spokesman for reshoring and for developing the skilled manufacturing workforce required by reshoring.

Largely due to the success of the Reshoring Initiative, Moser was inducted into the 2010 Industry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame and named Quality Magazine’s 2012 Quality Professional of the Year. He participated in President Obama’s 2012 Insourcing Forum, testified at a Congressional hearing on reshoring and manufacturing, and has been featured in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Bloomberg Businessweek.

Moser’s father and grandfather worked for the once-sprawling Singer Sewing Machine Company factory in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Singer factory is now gone, as are a long list of other American manufacturing plants and companies due to decades of offshoring. Not wanting to see even more U.S. manufacturing jobs disappear, Moser decided to start the Reshoring Initiative in 2010 to help companies recognize that U.S. manufacturing is often the most profitable choice.

In an effort to further encourage manufacturing education, Moser sits on the board of The National Institute of Metalworking Skills, an institute providing credentials for skilled manufacturing. Moser is also the president of the Swiss Machine Tool Society. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s of Science in Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also received an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Timothy P. Murray, President and CEO, Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce

Timothy P. Murray became President and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce in June of 2013. He leads a team of professionals serving the region’s business community by focusing on economic development, public policy, member services, and other activities that contribute to a vibrant business climate. The Chamber’s mission of recruit, retain, and incubate aims to bring new businesses to the region, retain existing businesses, and nurture those in emerging sectors.

Prior to the Chamber, Tim was elected Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2006, following a historic grassroots campaign alongside Governor Deval Patrick. As Lieutenant Governor, he worked to promote job growth, delivered landmark reforms in ethics, education, pensions, and the transportation system. Tim led the Patrick Murray administration’s negotiation with CSX regarding the historic acquisition of tracks across the Commonwealth and facilitated Massport’s acquisition of Worcester Regional Airport. As Lieutenant Governor, Tim chaired the National Lieutenant Governor’s Association.

A life-long Worcester resident, he was a former three-term Mayor of Worcester, New England’s second largest city. Under Tim’s leadership, Worcester experienced unprecedented progress, with $1 billion of new economic development projects, such as Gateway Park and City Square, that are helping to transform an older industrial city into one that is well positioned to lead and grow in the new economy.

Tim attended public schools in Worcester and St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury. He studied at Fordham University in New York City and put himself through Western New England College School of Law, attending classes at night, while working days as a substitute teacher and housing advocate. Following law school, he became a partner in the Worcester firm of Tattan, Leonard and Murray.

Tim and his wife Tammy (Sullivan), also a Worcester native, continue to live there and are proudly raising their two daughters, Helen and Katerine.
