Compass International School students showcase skills at MIT

Students from Compass International School Doha, a Nord Anglia Education school, have showcased their STEAM (science,

technology, engineering, arts and maths) skills to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) research-ers, professors and students at the annual MIT- Nord Anglia STEAMFest.

Compass International School Doha students have joined 104 stu-dents from 25 Nord Anglia Education schools globally for a programme designed by MIT and Nord Anglia Education experts. Working with professors and researchers from the university, students are taking part in innova-tive hands-on workshops in bioengineering, robotics, coding, music production, gaming and vir-tual reality.

Dr Terry Creissen, Executive Principal of Compass International School Doha said, “Our world-lead-ing education programmes are

designed to create the leaders of the future. Bring together the skills of teamwork, creativity and academic understanding, we are helping our students to be ambitious for what we can achieve by working in col-laborative partnerships.”

“I enjoyed Boda Borg (much like the crystal maze!) because we got to work with and make friends with people from other schools,” said

Pien, Compass International School Doha

The five-day event is a celebra-tion of STEAM subjects bringing students closer to the latest inno-vations in these fields at MIT. Compass International School Doha students participate in activities designed by MIT experts to build their understanding of STEAM through real-world application.

Some of the activities include learn-ing about the latest discoveries in cancer research to engineering a device to deliver drugs to tumour cells. Students will also visit MIT and Harvard to get a taste of stu-dent life at these prestigious universities.

“We are so delighted to give our students this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience STEAM subjects with the best in the world at MIT. Without a doubt, our stu-dents will benefit from what they learn at MIT for years tocome,” said Mark Orrow-Whiting, Director of Curriculum and Student Performance.

Students from the group’s 44 schools around the world learn together every day through online, in-school and worldwide experi-ences designed to nurture key transferable skills. Nord Anglia encourages students to be ambi-tious and set their sights higher by fostering a global perspective throughout their learning.

DeBakey students tour Qatar Science & Technology Park

DeBakey-Qatar students toured Qatar Science & Tech-nology Park in Qatar Foundation. The tour included: observing the engines in the aviation park where the

engineer gave a brief overview about the activities from GE and the machines; viewing the health care machines depart-ment where they could see ultra sound machines and the 3D Digital Mammogram; and they attended a conference about oil and gas extraction.

As a part of the engineering activity, the students were assigned to build a sailboat from a limited material that doesn’t sink for 10 seconds under wind conditions. Students found the field trip to be very interesting and educational. This field trip was an extension to their classroom lessons of the Physics and Intro to Engineering course.

PSI’s campaign for safetyThe Peninsula

The Pearling Season International (PSI) School welcomed a most esteemed guest, Dr Hassan Al Thani, at the end of April for a talk that became the grand finale to its ambitious Seat Belt

Safety Campaign. It was attended by senior stu-dents of PSI School, their teachers and interested parents.

Initiated in December last year, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of PSI School embarked on a mission to educate each and every Year level on the importance of seat belts in a state that has one of the highest rates of road-related fatalities for young people in the world. It aimed to do so through a series of creative and exciting initiatives that were age-appropriate and strived to imbed the message in a meaning-ful manner.

These included customised colouring books, stickers, campaign logo badges, fact sheets, fam-ily pledge statements to sign and return for bonus points, in-class songs and video demonstrations, on-site seat belt convincers and roll over car sim-ulators, and so much more.

“The Seat Belt campaign was wonderful,” Sta-cey James, Preschool Teacher at PSI School and

the main Communications Lead for all the Seat Belt Safety initiatives, describes. “The children were engaged at every level and participated in a variety of activities, thanks to our enthusias-tic faculty. I have had messages from parents sharing how their children were constantly reminding everyone to use car seats and wear their seat belts!”

In December, the PTA invited Dr Sohaila Cheema, the Director of the Division of Global and Public Health (GPH) at Weill Cornell Medi-cine – Qatar, to speak to nearly 400 students from Early Years to Key Stage 2. “Dr Sohaila gave such an engaging talk across two separate age-customised presentations,” Hershey Ansay, the key PTA contact for Dr Cheema and co-organ-iser for the campaign, says.

“Gauging from the raptured look on students’ faces and the exclamations from them, it was immediately obvious that they were taking away some very important messages from the presentations.”

Fast forward to April, the incredibly impor-tant role to reach out to students in Key Stages 3 and 4 fell on Dr Hassan Al Thani, who arrived in his surgical scrubs and armed with a multi-media presentation and stories from his own experiences.

Page 5: TUESDAY 9 MAY 2017 - The Peninsula · TUESDAY 9 MAY 2017 COVER STORY 05 As the Head of Trauma and Vas-cular Surgery at the Hamad Trauma Center of Hamad Medical Corpora-tion, Dr Hassan

COVER STORYTUESDAY 9 MAY 2017 05As the Head of Trauma and Vas-

cular Surgery at the Hamad Trauma Center of Hamad Medical Corpora-tion, Dr Hassan gave the students the viewpoint of a surgeon who sees the consequences of unsafe driving practices on a daily basis, primarily unrestrained drivers and passengers who are critically injured with trau-matic brain injuries in need of major surgery and/or ICU admission.

“He delivered such an engaging presentation,” says Sabika Shaban, the key PTA contact for Dr Hassan and co-organiser for the campaign.

“He used vivid imagery, statistics, campaign videos, dialogue, and sto-ries from his ward and his family. One of his home-hitting anecdotes was of his son who crashed his car in a video game. He exclaims to his son that his son is dead now, and his son simply tells him, ‘No, I just hit the replay button’. But in life, Dr Has-san tells the students, ‘there is no

‘replay’ button. You have only this one chance at life the whole way through.’”

Dr Hassan highlighted to the stu-dents the immediate repercussions of unsafe car practices, including the extent of the pain the victim has to bear, the impact on the family, and the effect on other people sharing the episode. He also highlighted the picture on a larger scale, such as the cost of accidents on the government, the current and projected statistics

of where this can lead to, and what observations have been made in past studies conducted in Qatar.

“Dr Hassan was simply phenom-enal,” says the Head Teacher, Delores Thompson, who strongly believes in embedding safe seat belt practices into the school culture. “He knew exactly how to talk to the stu-dents, with a wonderful sense of humour to appeal to them but also an appropriate serious tone when

he really required them to take the message home. Hearing it from someone who deals with trauma cases on a daily basis really brought a stark reality to the importance of safe driving practices.”

The incredible presentation was followed by a Q&A session with countless eager and curious students. He received questions about eating, drinking or smoking while driving; the use of Bluetooth and other

technology in the car; the range of severities that he has seen on his operating table; the long-term con-sequences of trauma; and even the physics behind the safe height of a car. The session ended with a distri-bution of fact sheets that were customised for students and attend-ing parents. Dr Hassan was also presented with a crystal shield from the Head Teacher in gratitude for his wonderful service to the school.

Roasting radishes trans-forms them into a vegetable that is tender and more subtly hued,

with a mellow and earthy taste that is similar to that of a turnip.

They are delicious simply sea-soned with salt and pepper, but a finishing sprinkle of tender herbs

heightens them further, adding contrasting color and fragrant, gar-den-fresh flavour.

A US study indicates that social smokers’ carries the same high blood

pressure and high cholesterol risk, identical to those who smoke every day. Published in the American Journal of Health Promotion, the study is the first to look at blood pressure and cholesterol in social smokers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Social smokers are defined as those who do not smoke cigarettes daily, but only during certain social sit-uations. Smoking is a risk factor for unhealthy blood pressure and cholesterol and both are significant contrib-utors to cardiovascular disease, the leading killer of men and women worldwide.

While 17 percent of 39,555

people surveyed from Febru-ary 2012 to February 2016 in the study called themselves current smokers and more than 10 percent said they were social smokers, mean-ing that they did not smoke every day, about 75 percent of these current and social smokers had high blood pres-sure and roughly 54 percent had high cholesterol. In addi-tion, social smokers in the study were more likely to be younger, between 21 and 40 years old, male and Hispanic.

“These are striking findings and they have such signifi-cance for clinical practice and for population health,” said study senior author Berna-dette Melnyk, dean of Ohio State University’s College of Nursing.

With sedentary lifestyle being one of the biggest reasons causing infertil-

ity, doctors say consumption of artificially sweetened sodas and aerated drinks may also lead to infertility in humans.

Aerated drinks contain an arti-ficial sweetener, aspartame, which can disrupt the endocrine system leading to hormonal imbalance and infertility issues in women.

“Almost all of the soft drinks and sodas contain aspartame which is linked to many health problems including infertility, malformations and miscarriages,” said Arvind Vaid, an IVF expert at Indira IVF.

“Excess consumption leads to hormonal imbalance and fluctua-tion that causes ovulatory disorders and even worsens PMS (Premen-strual symptoms),” he added.

Stating that phenylalanine and aspartic acids are the two amino acids present in aspartame consid-ered natural and harmless when

eaten in combination with other amino acids, the experts said when they are taken unaccompanied, it stimulates the generation of free radicals which leads to cell death.

“Sperm and ovum, being cells, have 90 percent chances of dying when this is consumed in excess. It is advised by many doctors and experts to avoid anything that helps in the formation of free radicals in the body for the significance of repro-ductive health,” said Vaid. Rachna

Jaiswar, associated with Gynaecol-ogy Department of Safdarjung Hospital, said consumption of sug-ary aerated drinks restrains the immune system causing weight gain and hormonal imbalance, which strongly contributes to fer-tility issues. “Soda is a highly acidic beverage, which alters the pH level of the body with excess consump-tion,” said Jaiswar.

Talking about the high consump-tion of aerated drinks and sodas by

men, Jaishwar said due to lack of nutrients in a high pH atmosphere, sperm cells either get harmed lead-ing to its abnormal shape and poor quality or eventually die.

“Moreover Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that reduces the male semen quality, is found in the lin-ing of plastic bottles and most canned goods. Men who consume soft drinks more often are at 4 times the risk of lowering their sperm count, motility and concentration,” said Jaiswar.

Doctors also said most of the soft drinks are caffeinated and con-tain fructose, which are associated with a higher risk of ovulatory dis-orders and infertility among women.

“Caffeine is known to be a vaso-constrictor that reduces uterine blood flow thereby reducing men-strual bleeding and shortening the duration of menses. Combination of caffeine, aspartame and fructose affects the sex hormones and the hormone receptors, even leading to infertility,” said Radhika Vajpayee, IVF expert based in Lucknow.

Justin Bieber to appearon ‘Koffee With Karan’

Grammy Award winning singer Justin Bie-ber will be in conversation with celebrated filmmaker Karan Johar on his show “Kof-

fee With Karan”, says a source. Bieber is set to visit India for the first time

for his Jio Justin Bieber Purpose Tour. The show will take place on Wednesday in Mumbai.

If everything goes as planned, Karan, who has interviewed Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, will host Bieber on his show.

“Koffee with Karan” has completed five sea-sons. He will be celebrating season six by unveiling it with Bieber.

“This will be the first time an international celebrity of Bieber’s calibre will be featuring in an Indian chat show format,” said a source.

Karan has conducted interactive chat show dialogues with international celebrities like Rich-ard Gere, Maria Sharapova, Hugh Jackman and Christian Louboutin apart from working closely with Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, George Clooney at world forum panels.

“He will definitely Ado full justice to this one-on-one exchange if Bieber actually does decide to reserve a time slot for it in his busy schedule,” said the source. Apart from Mumbai, Bieber will also visit New Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani says over half the shooting for the Sanjay Dutt biopic is done, and that the team will head for

a schedule in New York later this year.“Shooting wise, 60 percent of the film is

done. We are starting our next schedule now and will wrap that up by mid-June and after that we will have another schedule in New York,” Hirani said here on Sunday as he launched writer-director Tanuja Chandra’s book “Bijnis Woman’.

When asked about leaked pictures of Ran-bir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt, Hirani said: “That look was not supposed to get leaked. We were shooting that scene at Carter Road, and media somehow clicked and leaked those pictures.”

He is excited about the project. “I am very glad that we are making a film with lot of pos-itivity and happiness and I feel when you make a film with lot of joy, you are bound to make a good film and the story of the film is brilliant. Plus, Ranbir Kapoor is looking incredible in the film,” Hirani added.

Hirani, known for the “Munna Bhai” series and “3 Idiots”, said his films are based and inspired from books and life’s experiences.

“Whatever you make has to come from either your experiences or from what you have read or seen somewhere. I feel every creation is from your memories. Abhijat Joshi (co-writer) and me especially choose to pick some memories and real life incidents and modify

it. We usually pick it from our life and modify it to suit our film,” he said.

Talking about his love for books, Hirani said: “Books are really precious. I really like reading. I can’t sleep till the time I don’t read a book even if it is for 10 minutes. But now I feel that culture is vanishing somewhere. I think books are your friends and books are best way to get knowledge, stories and to know the world.” The Sanjay Dutt biopic also stars Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Karishma Tanna, Vicky Kaushal, Dia Mirza and Jim Sarbh. The film is scheduled to release around the end of this year in December.

Shah Rukh Khan’s banner Red Chil-lies Entertainments has started preparation for a movie based on

Operation Khukri, a rescue operation by the Indian military to rescue over 200 Indian soldiers held captive by rebels in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

“There is a lot of excitement in Red Chillies for this project. Since there would be a lot of research and prep involved, the production team has already started work on the same,” a source in the know of developments said.

Set to go on the floors later this year, it will be shot on real locations in Africa, the source said, adding: “While the director and cast are being finalised, preparations are underway to get this mammoth project rolling.” The film’s script is being developed in association with Azure Entertainment. The project is specially close to Shah Rukh’s heart, who started his acting career with a role as any army person in “Fauji”. According to the source, the actor is personally very upbeat about this project.

Mega star Amitabh Bachchan, who will next be seen in

Ram Gopal Varma’s “Sarkar 3”, says he is amazed with the kind of effort and hard-work the newcomers put into their films today.

A promo video which released online has Varma in conversation with Amitabh, discussing the new talent in the film industry lately. “I am abso-lutely amazed with the kind of effort these newcomers make before even their first film. Which is why I admire the fact that every time they appear for the very first film, they are so perfect.

Amazed with efforts of newcomers now: Amitabh Bachchan

Their face, expression, body, language, perform-ances... flawless,” said Amitabh, in the promo video which will come online on Eros Now.

Commenting on the perfectionism and the worked out bodies the actors now have, Varma said: “They (actors) are all

looking the same. They all come with a chiselled body, stylised hair and all that. They just look like models and I think it’s working against them.” “I think you will have to leave that choice to the audience. If they like somebody with a good body... fine,” the 74-year-old replied.

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, “Sarkar 3” is the third installment of the

“Sarkar” franchise. The political crime thriller film also stars Amit Sadh, Yami Gautam, Jackie Shroff and Manoj Bajpayee. Produced by Eros Now, “Sarkar 3” is set to release on May 12.

Nostalgic horror sensation “Stranger Things” and Dis-ney’s “Beauty and the Beast” shared the spoils at the MTV

Netflix’s hit series took best show and best actor in a show for an emo-tional Millie Bobby Brown, one of its young stars, while best actor in a movie went to Emma Watson for

“The village in our fairytale wanted to make Belle believe that our world was smaller than the way that she saw it, with fewer opportunities for her, that her curiosity and passion for knowledge and her desire for more in life were grounds for alienation,” said Watson, 27, of her iconic character.

“I loved playing someone who didn’t listen to any of that. I’m so proud to be a part of a film that celebrates diversity, literacy, inclusion, joy and love the way that this one does.”

which tells the previously little-known story of the vital contribution of Afri-can American women to the Nasa space programme, won a new “Fight Against The System” category. Vin Die-sel, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson came on stage to accept a “gen-eration award” for the “Fast and Furious” franchise.

Diesel thanked the generation of fans “willing to accept this multicul-tural franchise where it didn’t matter what coloor your skin was”. Hugh Jackman and debutante Dafne Keen, stars of “Logan”, were recognised for best double act while Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show” got best host.

The lighthearted space romp “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” had a massive opening week-

end, according to industry estimates on Sunday, selling some $145m tick-ets in the United States and Canada after last week’s equally impressive foreign debut.

The Disney/Marvel comedy about a band of misfit space adventurers — a sequel to the 2014 smash-hit film

— accounted for nearly 80 percent of

the money hauled in by the 12 top-selling movies over the three-day weekend, industry analyst Exhibitor Relations said. Analysts said the mas-sive debut, the sixth best for any movie opening in May, appears to sig-nal the arrival of the summer movie bingeing season. Guardians already debuted in foreign markets last week, taking in $106m, according to Box-OfficeMojo.com.

The breathtaking showing by Guardians ended the reign of “The Fate of the Furious”, this week’s box

office runner-up. “Furious” sold $8.5m in tickets in the fourth week of a lucrative run, which saw it sur-pass the $1bn mark worldwide.

Third place went to “The Boss Baby”, with $6.2m in receipts. The tale of rivalry between infants and puppies features Alec Baldwin as the voice of the tie-wearing baby-in-chief. In fourth was Pantelion’s

“How to be a Latin Lover”, a comedy starring Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez,

with $5.3m in ticket sales. The Disney blockbuster “Beauty

and the Beast”, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, hauled in another $4.9m, taking it to nearly half a billion dollars in ticket sales in North America during its two-month run.

Rounding out the top 10 were:“The Circle” ($4m)“Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” ($3.2m)“Gifted” ($2m)“Smurfs: The Lost Village” ($2m)“Going in Style” ($1.9m)

TECHNOLOGYTUESDAY 9 MAY 2017 13

If you love flaunting a smartwatch on your wrist, here’s a new one that can rotate, hinge, translate, rise and orbit, and is “smart” in every sense of the word.

The prototype, named Cito, can automat-ically orbit around the wristband to allow viewing when the wrist is facing away from the user, rising to alert the wearer of a notifi-cation if the user is playing a game, hinging to allow a companion to view the watch face, and translating to reveal the watch face from underneath a shirt sleeve.

“Users want smartwatches that fit their life-styles and needs,” said Xing-Dong Yang, Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, US.

“The Cito prototype is an exciting innovation that could give consumers even more great rea-sons to wear smartwatches,” Yang added.

It dramatically improves functionality — by performing independently or combined

— as well as addresses limitations of the fixed-face watches.

Further, the technology can provide impor-tant benefits to wearers with physical

disabilities or other impairments, the research-ers said. “Consumers will question the need for smartwatches if the devices are just not conven-ient enough. Cito proves the true potential of smartwatches and shows that they can be func-tional and fun,” Yang said.

Cito will be presented at the ACM CHI

Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Colorado.

In developing the prototype, researchers con-ducted two separate studies to confirm the usefulness, social acceptability and perceived comfort of different watch movements and usage contexts.

OnePlus 5 smartphone coming soonIf you are a OnePlus lover, get

ready for OnePlus 5 soon. The Chinese phonemaker has con-

firmed that its next flagship smartphone OnePlus 5 with dual-camera setup and high-end specifications will be launched this summer. According to The Verge,

“the phone is called OnePlus 5 and not OnePlus 4 because the number four is considered unlucky in China”.

The name OnePlus 5 has been inspired by former NBA player Rob-ert Horry. OnePlus’s Shenzhen office sports two Horry’s paintings and his

“number five” jersey inspired the smartphone’s name.

Its earlier devices OnePlus 3 and 3T have become a huge success in India. OnePlus 3T, that costs Rs34,999, comes with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM and sports 16MP rear and front cameras. It houses 3,400mAh battery

— an increase of 13 percent as com-pared to its predecessor.

Just days ahead of the its annual developer confer-ence “Google I/O”, the

company Google has announced to end the Android

“Nougat” Beta and will soon launch Android “O” Beta.

“Thank you for your inter-est in the Android Beta Programme. The beta for Android Nougat has concluded, and all devices that were opted in have been updated to the current public version,” Google said in an update to the Android beta website.

“If you are still running a beta version of Nougat you may download the latest full OTA image for your device and sideload it. This will not wipe your device. We’ll update this site when the Android O Beta Programme begins,” the update added.

To date, Google had been providing Beta versions of Android Nougat (versions 7.x)

alongside early “Developer Preview” versions of Android O which is touted as the next major Android version.

“But many Pixel and Nexus users are waiting for the Android O beta as the devel-oper preview is not really

intended for public consump-tion,” BetaNews reported yesterday.

Google is expected to unveil its plans for Android O features and functionality at the conference in San Fran-cisco this month.
