David Bowie

David Robert Jones (1947 – 2016), born locally in Brixton and known professionally as David Bowie, was a bisexual English singer-songwriter and actor. He moved to Beckenham in 1969. He arrived ‘broke, broken-hearted and disillusioned with the struggle of getting recognition & success as a performer. But he left Beckenham 4½ years later as a fully-fledged international star’ (from the walking tour of David Bowie’s Beckenham: http://www.inziggysfootsteps.com/ - why not take the tour?)He was a leading figure in the music industry and is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

Refugee Week- Religious response

1 in every 108 people globally is either an asylum-seeker, internally displaced or a refugee.

Syrians continued to be the largest forcibly displaced population in the world, with 13 million people at the end of 2018. That’s more than half of the Syrian population.

Only 3.4 million of the 7.1 million refugees of school-age were enrolled in primary or secondary education in 2018. More than half of them — 3.7 million — did not go to school.

70.8 million individuals have been forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations.

Only 16% of refugees are hosted in the rich and developed parts of the world. 80% are hosted by countries neighbouring their country of origin.

Refugee Week- Religious responseMany individuals flee persecution due to religious discrimination. What is the religious responses to refugees and persecution?

Christianity:When a foreigner

resides among you in your land, do not

mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be

treated as your native-born. Love

them as yourself, for you were foreigners in

Egypt. (Leviticus 19:33-34)

Islam:They love those who

emigrated to them and find not any desire in their hearts of what the emigrants were given, but rather give them

preference over themselves, even though they are in

privation.Surat Al-Hashr 59:9

Hinduism:“May you become one for whom the stranger (atithi) is a deva”Taittiriya Upanishad 1.11.1-2

(a deva is a person deserving of welcome, reverence, respect and

generosity)

Christianity:Jesus said: ‘Blessed are those who are persecuted…for theirs is the

kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:10-12

Refugee Week- Religious response

Supporting the persecuted• The Barnabas Fund- Aim to raise awareness and provides

financial support to projects that help Christians who suffer from discrimination, oppression and persecution because of their faith.

• Christian solidarity Worldwide (CSW)- Campaign for religious freedom for all, influence governments whose policies affect oppression and provide training on basic human rights law.

Reflection question- Religious teachings say we should ‘rejoice and be glad’. Is it possible to rejoice and be glad if others are being persecuted?
