  • • Read the poem on the next slide and pick one of the three words for every group of words.

    • Think about which words are the most effective and fit well within the poem.

  • The Eagle

    He grips/clasps/holds the crag with crooked hands;Close to the sun in lonely/foreign/strange lands,Ring’d with the cobalt/blue/azure world he stands.

    The wrinkled/wavy/rippled sea beneath him crawls;He gazes/looks/watches from his mountain walls,And like the thunderbolt he dives/falls/swoops.

  • Features of poetry• Adjectives – great describing words

    • Alliteration – repeating the same letter or sound (babbling brooks, towering trees)

    • Onomatopoeia – words that make the sound of the word itself when they’re spoken (crash, bam, gurgle)

    • Simile – comparing one thing to another using ‘as’ or ‘like’ (red like a rose, as big as a house)

    • Metaphor – a word or phrase applied to something to which it is not (the sea is a blanket of brilliant blue)

    • Personification – giving things human qualities (the trees danced in the wind)

    • Rhyme

    • Repetition

  • • Now look at the poem again and highlight/annotate any of the features of poetry that you can find.

  • • Take these six words from The Eagle and write six new sentences using each of the words.

    1. Crooked

    2. Clasps

    3. Lonely

    4. Wrinkled

    5. Beneath

    6. Thunderbolt

  • Wednesday 24th June

  • • Your task is to extend ‘The Eagle’ by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

    • Try and write at least two additional verses.

    • If you want to challenge yourself, see if you can write three or four additional verses.

    • Remember to include features of poetry. Challenge yourself to include as many as you can.

  • Thursday 25th June

  • Using The Eagle as inspiration, write a poem on an animal of your choice.

    1. Choose an animal that you feel confident writing many things about.

    2. Make a plan first, write some descriptive words and think about what you animal will be doing.

    3. Think about what setting the animal is in. Desert? Mountains? Forest?

    4. Challenge yourself to include as many features of poetry as you can.
