SC LABS MESSAGE TO COMPETITORS

As the only all organic, sun grown, event of its’ kind, The Emerald Cup has been at the forefront of pro-moting safety and quality standards in the cannabis industry. SC Laboratories has been the official test-ing partner of the Emerald Cup since our inception and we are proud of the work the Emerald Cup and SC Labs have done to promote safety, best practices, and quality control in the cannabis industry over the past eight years. This year SC Labs will be testing the entries for cannabinoid levels, terpene concentration, pesticide residues, microbiological contamination, and residual solvents. Below are explanations to help you better understand each test. To learn more about the tests we perform as well as cannabis science in general, visit sclabs.com or feel free to contact us directly with any questions regarding testing. Cannabinoids: SC Labs test identifies and measures the concentration of 14 different cannabinoids found in cannabis. Besides THC and CBD, we also quantify CBN, CBG, CBC, THCV, and CBDV as well as each cannabinoid’s acidic counterpart (THCA, CBDA, etc.). Cannabinoid concentrations are reported as a percentage by weight in flowers and concentrates and in mg/g for edibles and infused products. Terpenes: As the most important quality indicators in cannabis flowers and extracts, terpene con-centrations are the best quantitative indicators in predicting the outcome of contests like the chalice cup. When it comes to terpenes, the numbers don’t lie. Each year the entrants with the highest terpene contents place the highest in the cup. Our terpene test measures the concentration of 34 different terpene and terpenoid compounds in each sample. Pesticides: More than any other topic, pesticide contamination in the cannabis crop will be the most controversial issue as California begins to regulate cannabis with mandatory quality control testing. Growers and producers will need to accommodate these regulations by phasing out the use of certain pesticides. In the absence of final pesticide regulations in California, SC Labs has developed and vali-dated a pesticide assay and set reporting limits using pesticide regulations developed by the state of Oregon as our model. The pesticide assay will identify and measure the concentration of several pesti-cides commonly used on cannabis. Any detection above our reporting limits will lead to a disqualifica-tion from the event. A reporting limit is the minimum concentration of an analyte (in this instance a pesticide) that our tests can measure. As the extraction process for cannabis concentrates pesticides as well, it is advised that all entrants pretest their extracts unless they have knowledge of all parts of the production process for the raw materials used to make the extract. We reserve the right to update the pesticide testing requirements based on changes to relevant regulations before the event. Microbiological Contamination: SC Labs performs two types of microbiological assays. The first type quantifies the total bacterial and fungus populations on the material. These assays called total aerobic plate count and total yeast and mold respectively give an indication of the overall quality and potential shelf life of the product but not its’ overall safety as bacteria and fungus are ubiquitous in our environment. As such total aerobic plate count and total yeast and mold will not be used to disqualify entries. The second type of microbiological tests we perform are those that identify the presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria or molds. Detection of pathogenic microorganisms (eg pathogenic species of salmonella, E coli, or aspergillus) will lead to disqualification. We reserve the right to update the microbiological testing requirements based on changes to relevant regulations before the event. Residual Solvents: As an all organic, sun grown, event, the Emerald Cup does not accept extracts produced with chemical solvents. As such, any detection of a non-organically derived solvent (eg. Etha-nol) will lead to a disqualification. Extracts with more than 500 ppm of ethanol or another organically derived solvent will be disqualified as well.

STANDARDS FOR ANALYTICAL DISQUALIFICATION

The Emerald Cup is a sun-grown, organic competition. We are committed to educating cultivators, manufacturers and consumers about safe, clean farming practices that contribute to the health and wellness of consumers, the earth and the environment. Our goal is to ensure that only the cleanest, highest - quality products reach our judges. By implementing these stringent standards for disquali-fication, we aim to acknowledge and pay tribute to cultivators who utilize organic farming practices. Becoming a competitor in The Emerald Cup competition is an accomplishment that contestants should be proud of. Those who do not meet our standards to qualify for the competition will be privately notified by SC Labs via email. SC Labs representatives will make themselves available to answer any questions and concerns contestants may have.  Contest coordinators will make every effort to return disqualified entries to contestants (minus the weight required for testing) after The Emerald Cup.

To ensure you submit your best possible entry to the competition, try to think like a scientist. Avoid contamination during sampling, processing and packaging. Wear latex gloves and be sure to change your gloves between each different entry. Be sure to also sterilize all work surfaces and tools used in sampling.

PESTICIDE LIMITS: Any detection of an unapproved pesticide above SCL reporting limits will result in a disqualification from the Emerald Cup Contest.

Blindly Judged Submissions

All Flowers EntriesPlease provide 3 oz in a large mason jar or airtight container for judging, 4 grams in separate air-tight container for testing, and 2 grams in an airtight, protective container for the display case.

All Concentrates besides Vape PensPlease provide 28 ½ grams (14 grams total) in glass jars or parchment paper for judging, 5 (½) grams (2.5 grams total) for testing, and 2 grams for the display case. (Display material should be on a flat, clear surface for better public viewing of your product. Be sure that it is airtight and protected from light, folding other damage.)

Openly Branded Categories

Solid EdiblesPlease provide 28 separate samples for judg-ing, a total of 15 grams for testing and one additional sample for the display case.

* Please noteThe Emerald Cup makes every effort to prop-erly store and transport perishable entries. This year, edibles will be delivered directly to judges as soon as they pass safety testing. Contestants who are submitting perishable products are encouraged to place their sepa-rate samples for judges into a sealed plastic bag and then into a cooler with dry-ice. This ensures that your product stays fresh while it is being transported from the intake location to the judges.

Breaking down and properly packaging your Emerald Cup entry is one of the most important aspects of your participation in the competition. Please follow these instructions carefully! Entries that are not properly broken-down and packaged may be subject to disqualification.

Vape CartridgesPlease provide 28 (1 gram) or 28 (½ gram) cartridges with accompanying battery pack for judging, 6 (1 gram) carts or 12 (½ gram) cartridges for testing and 1 cartridge with accompanying battery pack for the display case.

* Please note SC Labs needs a total of 2.5 grams of mate-rial to perform full testing on these prod-ucts. Vaporizer pen cartridge packaging prevents complete removal of the test ma-terial due to adhesion. Required amounts for testing have been set accordingly.

TopicalsPlease provide 28 separate samples for judging, a total of 15 grams or 15 ml for testing and one separate sample for the display case.

Tinctures Please provide 28 separate samples for judging, a total of 15 ml for testing and one separate sample for the display case.

Other Unique ProductsProducts like suppositories, bath products, scrubs, lubricants, and other unique prod-ucts are often hard to define. Please make sure you consult with an Emerald Cup con-test coordinator to ensure you enter your product into the proper category so it is judged fairly! Contestants submitting prod-ucts like these should provide 28 separate samples for judges, a total of 15 grams (solid) or 15 ml (liquid) for testing and one additional product for the display case.
